O one can deny that books play a central part in the education of the youth. N

The Shalom Church Centre at Coromandel Farm outside Lydenburg had a few old books, a dilapidated building and a prayer that someday it would become a library. Pastor Johannes Ramashala, from the Shalom Church Centre, made the dream of this community come true by involving a church in Johannesburg and they in return asked Reddam House. Reddam House is a private school in Bedfordview. The learners volunteered their time and energy to come and do a marathon painting session. They got on the bus and spent the

whole weekend painting the dilapidated building. To lend a hand was Mrs Paulina Andrews, a member of the Shalom Church Centre, Clr Sabina Manzini, ward councillor of Coromandel Farms and Mr Alfred Khoza from Coromandel. Pastor Ramashala was the first to pick up a wheelbarrow to help the children. Clr Sabina has a special family tie to Coromandel's Community Village. She is the granddaughter of Abel Manzini. He worked for the late Mr Sydney Press (the founder of the Edcon group in 1929, including stores like Edgards). Mr Press is still well remembered. The Government bought Coromandel and the funding from government enabled the people who had worked on the farm and lived on the

farm for more than 40 years, to take ownership. The village is now called Abels Stat. This is a story where a dream became a reality. The Shalom Church Center has a few books that they are donating to the library. But please feel free to donate books, especially children's books and preschool literature (i.e. picture books for young children). It will help with the education of those children that cannot attend school yet. Books can be dropped off at the Highlands Panorama News.The community at Coromandel Farms does not have a lot of resources, but are always friendly, lend a helping hand and make visitors feel welcome. The library will grow from strength to strength.

'n Ouerpaar wat graag vir hul oorlede seuntjie, Melvin van Niekerk, 'n waardige begrafnis en grafsteen wou kry, het inisiatief geneem om fondse

daarvoor in te samel. Die berig "1025 kolwyntjies vir Melvin se grafsteen het in die Highlands Panorama Nuus op 28 Maart verskyn. Na afloop van die berig het sy ma Monique oproepe ontvang en skenkers het na vore gekom om haar te help. Sy het toe reeds 1025 kolwyntjies in byna drie weke gebak en verkoop. Die grafsteen is verlede Maandag opgesit. Melvin se ma, Monique, en sy ouma, me. Jackie Geldenhuys het bygestaan toe Martins Lydenburg die steen opgesit het. Melvin se familie wil graag almal bedank vir hul hulp met hierdie projek wat vir almal baie hartseer was: Martins Lydenburg vir die pragtige steen, anonieme donasies, McGee's Garage, J a c k i e G e l d e n h u y s e n Ly n e t t e Duvenhage.Ek het die grafsteen gekies sodat dit by Melvin pas. Die rugbypale omdat hy ons trotse losskakeltjie was, selfs met sy skewe voetjies, die 4x4 prentjie omdat hy so opgewonde was en enige berg in sy lewe met alle mag altyd uitgeklim het. Die woorde voor onder is: 'en ten einde sal jy met God Homself gevul wees' is die betekenis van sy naam, die naam Apie was sy bynaam en die woorde in vrede sal jy groot word spreek vanself. Alles is in goud gegraveer, want hy was 'n juweel in almal se lewens.

N an effort to adapt to globalisation a n d h i g h d e v e l o p m e n t o f technology, the banking sector has I

introduced online banking to their clients for easy accessibility of accounts, but this development has been hit by an alarming increase of criminals who commit online fraud, this is a challenge that was highlighted in a meeting between Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe and banking institutions in Mpumalanga.The meeting was held on 25 April at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. South African Police Service Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela, Provincial deputy chairperson of the Community Police Forum, board and bank managers in the province attended the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to bring the bank institutions on board to fight against organized crime that is associated with the banking industry.Amongst the crimes affecting the banking industry, cyber crime is regarded as the most problematic.Cyber crime is committed online, through internet or cell phone banking; where clients are either sent messages or emails by criminals who claim to be representing banks, and the clients then respond by giving out their banking details leading to the client's accounts being hacked as a result.Speaking during the meeting, MEC Shongwe told bank managers that there has been an alarming increase in organised crime associated with the banking industry in MpumalangaReports of tourists who have been victims of these syndicates have been reported to be high, we urge banks to vet (have a thorough security background check) their personnel before employing them because it is alleged that in some of the cases it is the employees of the banks that give out information of clients to criminals, said the MEC. G o r d o n S i m a n g a , M p u m a l a n g a Provincial head of ABSA, said that it is not the first time the allegations of bank personnel being involved in syndicates have been made and he assured the MEC that thorough security checks are done on their personnel before they are employed by the banks.He also said that as part of ensuring that their employees do not give out information about their clients, they do not allow those who interact with customers to have access to their cell phones while at work.Simanga also called on clients to refrain from withdrawing large amounts of money. We try by all means to discourage our clients from withdrawing large sums of cash from the bank, and to use alternatives in stead. Having a large sum of money puts them at risk of being victims of these syndicates, concluded Simanga.Other managers from various banking institutions present at the meeting, also assured the MEC that they would continue to put measures in place to eliminate commercial crimes in the province.(Issued by Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison)

Dullstroom and fly fishinglegend passes away

Mr Trout was the nick name of Mr Yousuf Ebrahim (Joe) Vaid, proprietor of Dullstroom's world famous Blue Shop Fly Fishing Tackle Shop. From the best rank amateurs to the keenest fly fishermen knew where to get the best fly fishing advice. He changed his business over time to become a world renowned trout tackle specialist shop. His passion for fly fishing was out of this world. His exclusive clients and friends knew that this 'world famous establishment' was the place to ponder over the greatest fly fishing waters and techniques. Mr Joe Vaid was born in Dullstroom on 9 March 1935. He began his schooling in Middelburg, Carolina, travelled to India with his brother Mr Sulaiman Vaid to attend the Aligarh Muslim University in 1945 and finished his school career at the Johannesburg Indian High School. The family business (started in 1916 in Dullstroom) was then called E. M. Vaid & Co. Mr Joe Vaid took over full custodianship of the business in 1975 and in 1976 the cafe adjacent to the building was closed to have a bigger store room. In the 1980's trout fishing was introduced to Dullstroom which changed the fabric of this small town. Capitalizing on this new development, Mr Vaid began mastering the art of trout fishing. For nearly 18 years, from Monday to Sunday, he would be at the trout dams harnessing his skills and perfecting the art with a great passion. His son Mr Mahmood Vaid, looked after the Blue Shop with his father. They were a well known fly fishing team and gave customers expert advice on how one should balance the rod with the reel and the line. Showing their concern for their clients, they offered inside information on the type of flies. They can draw from a stock of 608 patterns and nearly 60 000 flies.Mr Joe Vaid leaves his wife and three children, family and friends behind. His son Mr Mahmood Vaid will continue with the Blue Shop legacy. ONS het baie groot moeilikheid in hierdie land. Groter moeilikheid as n munisipaliteit wat nie werk nie. Groter moeilikheid as die ANC. Baie besighede en inwoners kom nie eers agter as die staatsdiens staak of nie werk nie. Hulle is so useless dat wanneer hulle wel werk, dit nie n verskil maak nie en ons dit nie agterkom nie.Nee, ons moeilikheid is veel erger. Dit is Telkom en sy

gebrekkige verskaffing van internetdienste. Die hele wreld maak staat op die internet. Dink bietjie: As jy brandstof ingooi en die sisteem is van lyn af, is jy gebogger. n Dubbelkajuit of SUV benodig R1 000 se brandstof op n slag. My Monaro kos R1 800 om vol te maak. Wie loop toevallig met di soort kontant rond? As jy by n winkel koop en hulle is aflyn gee dit n verleentheid af. Jy kan nie kontant trek as die bank van lyn af is nie. Jy sal nie hierdie koerant in jou hande h as die stelsel omval nie. Verlede week Dinsdag het ons n voertuig inderhaas Johannesburg toe gestuur om die koerantbladsye op DVD by die drukker te kry. Gelukkig het Fanie en Andries van Lydenburg Toyota gehelp, want hulle was aan. Ek kon

Die argument dat padbouery by Middelburg hulle lyne opgegrawe het hou nie water nie. Die Internet is byna weekliks af.Ja, die doemprofete s lankal die einde is naby. Ek glo hulle! n Mens kan nog om n slaggat ry, as daar nie n vragmotor in die ander baan is nie! Mens kan nog water koop (as jy kontant het!) en mens kan by kerslig kuier as die krag af is, maar mens kan nie sonder die internet nie. Wat nou? Miskien moet ons as n gemeenskap saamstaan en n gesamentlike klas eis teen Telkom indien vir ons verliese. Dit sal miljoene per dag beloop as ons saamstaan.

Concerned lady writes:Dear Sir / Madam, Can you please tell us when you are going to repair the potholes between Lydenburg and the Bambi/Schoemanskloof turnoff? For those who want to complain about the Dullstroom road, it is outside my area. The mine trucks have destroyed our road and nobody cares about the damage to our vehicles and environment. Please don't fill the potholes with sand, ask the mines to donate the tar to fill the holes. It is their fault that this has happened. A few years ago we witnessed officials taking road samples to redo the road. Strangely these officials were later nowhere to be found despite rumours that the Provincial Government had included a large sum of money in their budget to repair the Mpumalanga roads. The Department keeps on filling the holes with sand with one truck and 20 workers but the rain washes away the sand that you are filling the potholes with every time. Don't waste your fuel anymore, one truck load will in any event only cover about 5 km. Then you have to go back to fill the truck again and that is too much work in one day. Did you see that in most places the road has a furrow (sloot) right across the road so that one has to leave the road to drive next to the road or come to a complete standstill in order to drive through the potholes? I shudder to think what can

happen to those poor people who do not drive the road regularly and do not know where the potholes are or have to drive at night or when it rains and the water has filled up the holes. One cannot even suggest that you buy a truck to drive through the potholes because they are so deep that the trucks are now also swerving to avoid them. And God forbid that you are coming from the front, the truck will surely run you over. Rather take a drive in the long grass to save your life. My condolences to those people who have lost loved ones on the road already.Please tell us if you are going to leave the road like this forever and ever? Then we can start appealing to the mines to repair the road. They have huge budgets and can certainly afford it. I mean, it is only R1 million per kilometer and it is approximately 70 kilometers so it will only cost the mines R70 million. If every mine will only donate a few million, our lovely and scenic road will be repaired by a professional company and last longer. If we ban the trucks from driving on our roads, they will last much longer. This means more tourists, more money, new streets, new servicesam I getting carried away?Viva Xstrata, Anglo American, Assmang, Sino Steel, Northam Platinum, to mention but a few!!We insist on a public reply in this newspaper and look forward to hearing from you in the not too distant future?

Open letter to the MpumalangaProvincial Government

Elize Ballack, Watervalsrivier-area skryf:Die hele apartheid debakel maak mense van alle rasse nou nog lekker die dinges in. Veral sedert min. Trevor se uitlating dat die tyd om apartheid te blameer vir swak dienslewering nou verby is. Pres Jakes het hom lekker die kop gewas daaroor, en hom verseker dat apartheid steeds 'n daadwerklike verhindering is van vele goeie goed wat nog in die land moet gebeur.Die argument het egter nie 'n regte antwoord nie. Eintlik is die keuse van antwoorde vals want albei antwoorde kan reg of verkeerd wees, of daar kan selfs 'n derde alternatief wees. Sekere goed word wel steeds benvloed deur die nadraai van apartheid en ander goed weer nie. Ander weer het niks te doen met of daar ooit apartheid was al dan nie. Maar ons ou klompie praat mos oor alles in die uiterste vorm.Dis nogal 'n bietjie fundamentalisties op 'n manier. Want sekere probleme kan tog wel aan die voete van apartheid gel word, (soos townships, en die meegaande swak infrastruktuur) en ander probleme wat ons deesdae het (soos die nie-aflewering van skoolboeke en die verval van

Elkeen stoei in eie kampstaatshospitale) weer nie. Maar ons laat onsself toe om ingesuig te word in hierdie tweeledige tipe argument. Die een is julle is flippen mal as julle dink apartheid is nog steeds 'n faktor na amper 20 jaar en die ander een is julle is flippen mal as julle dink die nadraai van apartheid kan in 20 jaar uitgewis word. Nie een van die argumente is heeltemal waar of heeltemal vals nie.Maar omdat ons nou so sterk voel oor hoe ons eie groep ly aan die hand van die 'vyand' sien ons alles in sy absolute vorm.... en ons almal mis eintlik die boot totaal en al. Ons mis goue geleenthede om saam aan te beweeg, want ons staar onsself blind teen ons eie fundamentalistiese vooroordele en vrese. (Natuurlik tel ek of jy nou nie onder di ou spul nie).Ons kant is altyd moreel bo verdenking, eties korrek en beskermend oor gemeenskapsbelange, en die ander kant is altyd moreel bankrot, onderduims, oneties en aanvallend teenoor gemeenskapsbelange. Watter een reg of verkeerd is hang af van watter kant van die apartheids-gordyn jy staan, natuurlik is ons almal, alle rasse, altyd, sonder twyfel, geheel en al... reg.

Dis Kosmos-tyd. Een van my gunsteling tye van die jaar. Soos die Kosmos blom in plate van pienk en pers is die natuur een groot skilderdoek met die talle lappe kleurvolle kosmosse. Herfs, April en kosmosse is in my Hoorhierso-gedagtes altyd sinoniem. Want op 27 April het ek die eerste keer gestem as eerstejaartj ie op Potchefstroom in 1997. Na die stemmery het ek en my nefies gerwe vol kosmosse gaan pluk vir my tannie. Sommer studentepret. Verlede week was daar wyksverkiesings in die land en ons het 27 April herdenk. Hierdie tyd van die jaar staan vir my as Dis mos nou weer ek-kies-ju-en-ju-nie-tyd. Vroer in April het ek weer die pragtige kosmosse op pad van Middelburg gesien. Al skater 'n mens dus vir die absurditeite van Suid-Afrikaanse politici, teken dit allermins 'n somber prentjie. Meet dit net teen die kleurryke natuur. Alles kry hopelik gou end; politici en hulle beloftes, ministers en hulle versekerings, opposisie, groot en klein, plakkate, reklame en al. Afrikaners se ore tuit nou al polities korrek maak my ore tog so seer. Want die politiek is net so kleurryk. As 'n mens op die internet gaan rondloer, is dit verstommend om te sien hoeveel mense deur di eenvoudige blommetjie genspireer word: R e i s a g e n t s k a p p e , g a s t e h u i s e , d o r p e , kerkgemeenskappe, marathons en selfs 'n karnaval is al daarna vernoem, en dit is ook die inspirasie vir talle gedigte, liedere en skilderye.Hierdie plant is, soos die ou mense altyd ges het, 'n dankbare blommetjie. Dit groei in vol son, is redelik droogtebestand, groei goed in swak grond (solank dit goed dreineer) en is siektebestand. Daarom is dit ook ideaal vir potte in daardie moeilike sonhoekies waar alles verlep. Die kosmos se botaniese naam is Cosmos en word wreldwyd aangetref. Die tuinkosmos word Cosmos bipinnatus genoem. Een soort het selfs 'n sjokolade geur! Klim in die kar, gaan soek 'n kosmos, of hier by ons berglelies of bosse groen bome. Druk 'n sjokolade in die kies, verkyk jou en vergeet van die politiek en droom sommer in pienk en pers.

die klinte te vermaak by Laramie Spur, Lydenburg. Op 26 April het James sy eerste buitelugvertoning hier in Lydenburg, tesame

met Devine en Nicolene Breytenbach gehad. Dit was afgesien van die koue weer suksesvol. James gaan JHB toe om sy drome na te jaag, maar wil graag hiermee mnr Johan Loots van LHS bedank vir sy ondersteuning en mnr Corrie Kleyn van Laramie Spur vir die aanmoediging en kans wat hy gegun is om daar op

WHY YOU SHOULD BET ON A WATER TANK The conservation of water is being seen in a new light all over the

Die groep van meer as 30 kinders is (nadat hul kamprels neergel is) reeds van vroeg Vrydagmiddag vol inligting gestop. Jy maak net dood wat jy gaan eet het 'n nuwe betekenis gekry, toe daar verduidelik word dat dit insekte insluit. Oom Corrie en tannie Riana Kleyn van Laramie Spur, Lydenburg, het gesorg dat elke kind 'n braaipakkie van sy eie gekry het en daar is gebraai en gekuier. Nadat die jongklomp die leviete voorgelees is oor slange, is 'n klomp maar heel paranoes bed toe.Saterdagoggend het 'n paar manne oom JB se vasberadenheid getoets en is hul met 'n draffie beloon. Die res van die kamp is met 'n koffie, beskuit en 'n heerlike renbui begroet. Oom Johan Grimbeek het vir die die jongklomp 'n Rooibok kom afslag en dit was vir almal 'n belewenis. Oom Ramon Bell en sy dogter Jessica het oorgeneem en die toekomstige jagters is touwys gemaak met splinternuwe luggewere en daar is na silhouette geskiet tot laatmiddag. Na nog lesings, boogskiet, en eet, eet, eet, is die groep doodmoeg bed toe.Sondagoggend het ons eie wreldbekende herpetoloog, oom Neels Bothma en oom Anton van Loggerenberg 'n professionele Veldgids, ons meer kom vertel van slange en natuurbewaring in die algemeen. Nel gesin van Steelpoort skryf: Ek skryf vandag hierdie briefie omdat ek voel iemand verdien erkenning in vandag se lewe. Hoe s mens dankie vir n vreemdeling wat haar oor jou ontferm het in n tyd toe dit vir jou gevoel het die lewe gaan verby en niemand sien jou swaarkry raak nie. Toe ons in Steelpoort gekom het n paar maande gelede, het ons niemand geken nie. Toe ontmoet ek 'n "engel" want hierdie vrou moet uit die hemel op aarde geplaas wees. Ons het swaar gekry en my seun het beswaarlik klere vir die skool gehad. Ek het handwerk items gemaak en verkoop. Toe ek by die dame se werk ingestap het, het ek n mens raakgeloop wat haar hart en siel vir mense oopmaak, al ken sy hulle nie. Die engel het my op my gemak laat voel en ek het vir haar my verhaal vertel. Sy het goed by my gekoop en my kontaknommer gevra. Hierdie engel het my die volgende oggend geskakel en my meegedeel dat ek asb. by haar kantoor moet aandoen. Toe ek daar kom het sy n koevertjie aan my oorhandig. Ek kon vir my kind sy skoolklere koop, sy skryfbehoeftes en n tas. Hoe kan ek dankie s behalwe dat ek vir Steelpoort se gemeenskap wil se, julle het n engel in julle midde. A reliable source at Porsche has confirmed that the next-generation 911 Turbo will feature an innovative four-wheel steering system to further sharpen its dynamic prowess.During the local launch of the Porsche Cayenne GTS, a senior source at Porsche SA revealed that the upcoming 991 series 911 Turbo will feature an innovative chassis enhancement that will lend the car even more agility.The technology will comprise an electric four-wheel steering system that will probably work in harmony with Porsches existing PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) system. PTV basically oversees a limited-slip differential that applies moderate braking to the inside wheel under cornering to sharpen up the cars line and, especially in the case of all-wheel drive models, counter potential understeer.The electric four-wheel steering system will take this a step further by applying a small, but appreciable, degree of rear-wheel steer opposed to the front turn-in. By utilising an electrically actuated system, Porsches engineers will keep additional weight to a minimum while being better able to harmonise the system with the new cars electric power steering set-up.Theres still a great deal of speculation surrounding the new Turbos powerplant, but its widely believed that power will be provided by a twin-turbo 3,8-litre flat-six unit coupled with a choice of 7-speed manual or twin-clutch (PDK) transmissions. Cheap services do not existTRAFFIC-light shopping has got to be the highlight of my day. In Gauteng you can do your monthly shopping at the traffic lights and receive pamphlets on every service under the sun. The one pamphlet that always catches my eye is the Major Service - from R495 one. After I stop laughing, I take one and skim through it. The claims made are laughable because the garage will almost certainly be working for free if they carried out all the checks and replacement of parts as stipulated in the leaflet. It is a sure way of getting a cash-strapped customer into the shop and then bushwhacking him or her. Ten minutes after you have dropped off your car at the workshop, your phone rings. I will give you one guess as to who it is, yes, its the repair centre, letting you know that practically every other part on your motor vehicle has to be replaced. The service is still R495 but all the other items that are damaged or badly worn, will cost you R5 000. Did you have any idea that you were driving a death trap, or that your car was in such a bad state of disrepair? A sure fire way of getting you to do the repairs is telling you the extra theyre now quoting you, is for safety critical items. THE REAL COST Let me give you an example of the cost to maintain probably the cheapest car in the market, the Golf I, carburettor model: Air filter R37, Oil filter R42, Fuel filter (plastic in line) R15, 4 spark plugs (Bosch) R60, 5L engine oil (15W40) R250, Labour (1hour, incl.VAT) R456. This totals R860 and this bill doesnt include a percentage added to the parts. The parts are cost price to a service centre, just to show you that a major service can never be done for R495, under any circumstances. The after-market service centres or non dealerships that are in the know, and do really good work, are well aware of the fact that these ridiculous claims of servicing your vehicle cheaply do not exist. The old saying of If something looks too good to be true, it is is absolutely perfect for this situation. The absolute best check for me is the so called visual check on driveshafts, steering, fuel lines and cooling system. So these guys are so damn good they have x-ray vision and can check the state of wear on the cv-joints on the side shafts. 5-SECOND GLANCE What they mean to say is that they will have a 5-second glance at the state

of the steering rack boots and the cv-joint boots on your car. The cooling system on the other hand is completely different and needs to be pressure tested to determine if the pipes are still in good condition and the radiator does not leak. You have to be a psychic to just visually check them and be able to determine their state. The pressure test on your cooling system and a removal and check on the radiator cap can and may save you a very costly repair. So a visual check can only be done by superman. Dont look for the bargains when wanting to service your vehicle ... they dont exist (the bargains that is). Go to your regular mechanic and ask him to give you a written quote for repairs on your car. If the quote is reasonable, but you may have a problem with paying the entire amount, ask him which items need to be fixed urgently and which items can last until the next service. This is a sure way of ensuring that your vehicle is safe and you never miss a service. - Mercury Motoring iol.motoringED: This article is true. You can skimp on price by buying cheap

oil, which is a very bad thing to do. Buy quality branded oils like Castrol Magnatec, GUD or Fram filters and if you are as paranoid as I am, add a bottle of PS23 to your oil. I have never lost an engine and have literally done millions of kilometres in numerous vehicles. You only need to replace plugs every third service. Taking the above list of the Golf, you are looking at around R 750 just for the spares for an Opel Corsa. No labour. And if you work slowly and meticulously like I do, a proper service, allowing all the old oil to drain out, will take you 2 hours, so add another R 1 000 for labour and you get to a total of at least R 1 750 for a minor service. And another thing - shorten your service intervals to 10 000 km. With all the chrome dust flying around in our area, oils get contaminated much faster.Andre Coetzee.

Waarom verkoop die Amarok nie soos dit moet nie?Die antwoord is baie ingewikkeld.Kopers koop dikwels met die hart. Hulle koop by Piet wat die plaaslike Toyota Handelaashoof is en almal in die boerderygemeenskap ken. Hulle koop n Hilux want die buurman / baas / vriend het n Hilux gekoop en hulle wil nie anders wees nie. Ek, sal weer n Isuzu koop, want ek het een en ek is hoogs tevrede met myne. En so bepaal faktore wat eintlik niks met jou verstand (of die meriete van die voertuig) te doene het nie, wat jy koop of waarvan jy hou.Car se toets is derhalwe belangrik, omdat dit n ander, moontlik (hopelik) objektiewe opinie verteenwoordig.Persoonlik glo ek ook n mens moet bietjie navorsing doen. As jy net langpad gaan ry, is rygerief, klankstelsel, klimaatbeheer en hoe die sitplekke sit sekerlik belangriker. As jy gereeld sleep, is sleepvermo sekerlik baie belangrik. Hoeveel kampgoed en vrag laai jy? Hoe swaar is jou boswa se haak. Dan is dravermo baie belangrik.Maar al hierdie logiese argumente hou nie water nie. n Toyota man se antwoord oor hoekom n Hilux, is byna altyd betroubaarheid. Maar meeste Toyota manne vervang sy Hilux elke drie tot vier jaar. Selfs n Chinese bakkie hou so lank. Dit is dus nie oor betroubaarheid nie. Hoekom ry ek n Isuzu? Die enigste kans wat verkoopmanne het, is dat hulle kollegas in die werkwinkel, by finansiering en elke ou in die handelaarskap baie hard moet werk om die koop en eienaarervaring so uitstekend te maak, dat hulle die kopers lok. England is the home of the Transit van, a big and square box of a vehicle that, for whatever reason, is the favourite vehicle there of b a n k r o b b e r s a n d s i m i l a r undesirables. Go figure. Back in the 1960s it was the definitive stuff -mover; plumbers, roofers, builders, carpenters, department stores anything of reasonable size that needed shifting probably changed loca t ions in a Fo rd Transit.It was the original white van and if you didnt see at least a half-dozen from the bus on the way to work you were probably sleeping. Since then it has gone through many changes and facelifts but, l ike the VW Beetle, it was always recognisable.Its had 47 years as market leader in the UK, selling 60 000 a year there and 250 000 across Europe, and the latest model was named 2013 Van of the Year. About 2.3-million have been sold in the UK since 1965 and an amazing 700 000 are still on the roads there, according to Ford, which adds: Its the backbone of business in the UK.It was assembled in South Africa in Port Elizabeth from 1967-74 then quietly disappeared; perhaps VWs Transporter took its place. For 25 years Ive been asking Ford SA if the latest versions would come to SA and the answer was always: No, sor ry ! Why? Apparent ly because Fords lack of export vehicles over the years didnt generate enough credits to allow import of the Transit. IN the last few years, especially in an area that is alive with mining activities, the phrase Local Economic Development has become quite the buzz!Local Economic Development, in South Africa, is rather a new movement (more or less 10 years). The drive behind LED is that when large companies, with the greatest emphasis on mining, make their millions out of a specific area and then move on, they are to leave a legacy behind. Their involvement in an area should facilitate wealth and progress for the local people who stay behind. Unfortunately, this has not necessarily been the case in times past. There are various role players within the LED arena. The most important of these is local government as they should be the guiding and leading (if not cheerleading) body that shows the way (with the facilitation and compiling of the IDP) and who measures progress against specific targets for an area within a designated time frame. Sadly, the municipalities have not always fulfilled their role mostly as a result of a lack of knowledge within its ranks regarding LED. The other role player of note is of course the Department of Mineral Resources. As legislative body, their role is mainly to assure that the mines in their various regions are adhering to their own, approved Social and Labour Plans. Lastly, the third and very important role players are the mines/mining related companies. With dedicated staff and a

budget of note, they endeavor to adhere to legislation and to make a difference in people's lives. Not a small or easy task - let me assure you!One of the biggest challenges with LED is the correct definition. There is specific legislation and guidelines that have reference to LED but it is wide open to interpretation. If, in a room filled with let's say 20 people, the question is asked: What is LED, you are sure to receive 20 different definitions. Some good, some bad, some nearer to the target and some totally way off! Let's start off by looking at what LED is NOT. LED is not charity. It is not philanthropy, it is not brand building. All of the above is very noble and has its specific place and campaigns such as blanket runs and food hampers for the elderly at Christmas and sport kits for local schools and other similar types of campaigns are fantastic and kind and necessary but they are NOT LED.Of all the definitions that I have heard, the World Bank, a leader in LED, has a definition that gives clear direction to LED. They say that The purpose of local economic development (LED) is to build up the economic capacity of a local area to improve its economic future and the quality of life for all. It is a process by which public, business and nongovernmental sector partners work collectively to create better conditions for economic growth and employment generation. Does this definition open a can of worms? I think not. It rather opens doors for many companies (not just mining companies) to do their bit for LED and to promote synergy between these companies who are working towards a collective outcome. Alongside that, it gives us a specific question to ask when deciding whether a project is actually LED or not! As with all worthwhile projects, proper planning and structure is needed to assure success. In our following articles on LED, we will be discussing these specific steps and actions.
