TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — If you share your food with the hungry, provide housing for the homeless, then light shall break forth upon you (Isaiah 58:7-10). Psalm — The just man is a light in the darkness to the upright (Psalm 112). Second Reading — My message to you, says Paul, was the proclamation of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). Gospel — You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before oth-ers, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, In today’s gospel reading Jesus tells us about Christian life in symbols of light and salt. Two thousand years ago, there was no electricity, and so there was no electric refrigerator, no electric light. It seems that the symbols of light and salt were much more meaningful for people in Jesus’ days than for us. Anyway, salt is vital in preserving food and for mak-ing it flavorful. To be the salt of the earth means to make life good for our fellow man. Light is what makes it possible for us to see. To be the light of the earth means to show people where they are to go.

When we think about some more critical situations, we see the great value of basic elements. Let us think, for example, about a ship on the sea at night in old days. A light, a beacon from the lighthouse allows the ship to come in a safe way to the port. Or, let us think about travelers going through a deserted place for many days, their food supply without salt would become putrid pretty soon. We are called by Jesus to be a light of a world, to be a salt of the world. This weekend at our Vigil Mass on Saturday we will enjoy the presence of nuns and friars from across the Archdiocese of Chicago gathered with Cardinal Blase Cupich, and celebrating World Day of Consecrated Life. We truly thank God for carrying the light and salt in their mission. Religious orders play the crucial role in the Church to enlighten the world with the Good News, and preserve humanity from corruption. What a coincidence! Today is the Announcement Weekend of the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) 2020 in the Archdiocese of Chicago. In the past, ACA was called a Cardinal’s Appeal. I have no idea what Cardinal Blase will include in his homily on Saturday Mass, but I think that his presence will appeal to our spirit of steward-ship and responsibility for the Church. At Sunday morning Masses we will enjoy testimonials of the new gen-eration, students from our Religious Educa-tion Program, how they enjoy being a part of the community. This year’s theme for the An-nual Catholic Appeal is “Come follow me… and heal our world”. We can’t do much as a single person, as we can do as a community. We can’t do much in the world as a single parish, as we can do as an Archdiocese, and as a Catholic Church. May God bless you, Father Andrew

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Concerns During the Cold and Flu Season The office for Divine Worship has received telephone calls and inquiries regarding the Sign of Peace and Holy Communion from the Cup during this current season when so many people are susceptible to the common cold or flu.

During this time, it is important to remember common sense. While there are no plans at this point to make provi-sions for the suspension of either of these elements (i.e. the sign of peace or Holy Communion from the Cup) from the celebration of the Eucharist, everyone should exercise prudence. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal does not mandate a particular gesture to use in the Rite of Peace. The customary gesture is to extend a hand to those near. However, if one is ill with the cold or flu, or if one feels the need, another gesture is perfectly accepta-ble. For example, a nod of the head and a smile could accompany the verbal sharing of Christ’s peace.

In regard to Holy Communion from the Cup, communicants should always act responsibly. If one is ill he or she should refrain from taking Holy Communion from the Cup. Pastors and parish leadership should not at this time suspend offering the Precious Blood because of this season of colds and flues. However, all liturgical ministers should be sure to practice good hygiene, making sure to wash their hands, or to use a hand sanitizer, in preparation for ministering Holy Communion. ~~~Terri, Parish Nurse~~~

As the Flu season peaks, I would like to reiterate information, obtained from the CDC, that I have shared in the past, regard-ing the Key Facts About Influenza (Flu) What is Influenza (Flu)? Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death especially in the elderly and youth. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Flu Symptoms Influenza (flu) can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu is different from a cold. Flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all these symptoms:

*fever or feeling feverish/chills *cough *sore throat *runny or stuffy nose *muscle or body aches *headaches *fatigue (tiredness) some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

***It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.*** How Flu Spreads Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or pos-sibly their eyes. Period of Contagiousness You may be able to spread flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. • People with flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after their illness begins. • Some otherwise healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time. Onset of Symptoms The time from when a person is exposed and infected with flu to when symptoms begin is about 2 days, but can range from about 1 to 4 days. Preventing Seasonal Flu The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Flu vaccine has been shown to reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause res-piratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

Easter Pilgrimage -- American Passion Play Bus Trip

We are going to see the American Passion Play in Bloomington, Illinois on Saturday, March 21, 2020 in the Easter Pilgrimage tradition that brings Christ's life closer to yours. Come with us and take a spiritual journey to travel with the living Christ, meet his Apostles and follow his ministry. The play is historically and biblically accurate, and is the oldest continu-ously performed Passion Play in the U.S. The play is 3 ½ hours long including intermission. We have chartered a motor coach that will leave the OLMC parking lot at 9 am. We will ar-rive in Bloomington for a lunch buffet at 11:30 am. The buffet includes roast beef and chick-en accompanied by potatoes and gravy, two vegetables, salad, rolls, dessert and a beverage. We will then see the play at 1:00 pm. Following the play at approximately 4:30 pm, we will

begin our travel back home and make a stop for a light meal. We will return to OLMC between 7:30 and 8:00 pm. The cost of the trip is $75 per person and includes transportation, lunch and the performance (cost of light meal is not included). To reserve your spot, please come to the Rectory or drop an envelope with your check payment and name(s) of who will be attending in the collection basket. If you should have any questions, please contact the Rectory at 773-625-3369.

Come, follow me… and heal our world

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you found located in the pews. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal the world.”

Once we reach our parish goal of $19,450 in paid pledges, any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. Last year we received $5,607.28 over the goal and it supported the narthex restrooms remodeling project .

2020 Annual Catholic Appeal

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

Altar Serving It is not just open to children anymore; adults are also welcome. This is a wonderful way to serve the Lord at Mass. If you are an adult who has helped out as an altar server on occasion, if you and your child would like to serve together as altar servers, if you have never been an altar server, but would be interested in becoming one now, if you and your spouse would like to serve together as altar servers, if you were an altar server growing up and would like to be an altar server again, if you and a friend would like to serve together as altar servers, if you serve in another ministry, and would also like to serve in this ministry, here is your opportunity to receive training and be an altar server. Please contact the rectory at 773-625-3369, if you are interested. We look forward to hear-ing from you.

February 11th, 2020 is the XXVIII

Introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1992 as a day to encourage people to pray for those who suffer from illness and for their caregiv-ers. This day also coincides with the com-memoration of our Lady of Lourdes. In observance of this day, we will be as-sessing blood pressure after each of the masses on February 15th and 16th. Please stop by.

World Marriage Day is an annu-al observance organized by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a religiously-based program de-signed to help married couples improve their marriage. It is cel-ebrated on the second Sunday in February.

In 1981, several couples from Baton Rouge, Louisi-ana encouraged the Mayor, the Governor and the Bishop to proclaim Saint Valentine's Day (February 14) as We Believe in Marriage Day. The national leadership of Worldwide Marriage Encounter adopt-ed the idea, changed the name to World Marriage Day (WMD) and moved the date to the second Sun-day in February. The first WMD celebration was held in 1983.

The purpose of WMD is to honor husband and wife as the foundation of the family which is the basic unit of society. On this day, people celebrate the beauty of husband and wife's faithfulness, joy and sacrifice in daily married life. The theme for the day is “Love One Another”. It is the commandment giv-en to us by Jesus Christ in John 15:12.
