  • Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, A husband said to his wife: if I told you, that I will paint the room, I will do it, you do not need to remind me every year. We all have a long list of things to do. Also, at the parish there are more or less urgent, more or less important projects and repairs. One of the

projects asked about were the tiles on the floor in narthex bath-rooms. It looked like there was a leaking pipe under the floor. The tiles were falling apart in a straight line, in both the women and men bathrooms. In fact, there is no pipe, this is the line of the orig-inal outside wall of the building from the late 1960’s. Remodeling of the church interior in 1987 included the addition of the narthex. The floor in the extended area of today’s bathrooms and narthex slightly went down. It is almost invisible under the carpet in the narthex, but it affected ceramic tiles in bathrooms. Sorry for the inconvenience this weekend. Please use restrooms in the Hayes Center, or there is a little restroom by the sacristy. An-other inconvenience are the bills. Please, be generous with the reg-ular collections. Of course, the building fund in which we contrib-ute to every first Sunday of the month feeds the project, and be-quests we received allowed us to do the renovation. But the list of things to do is long. The storage area by the kitchen in Hayes Cen-ter will be remodeled as well. The month of November is a special time when we remember our beloved deceased. Jesus emphasiz-es the truth about resurrection. Even as we know the deceased to be dead to this life, we pray for them, because they need our intercessions, and also, they intercede for us. We keep the book in the front of the altar with the names of our beloved who passed away in the last year. We keep there, as well, the names written on envelopes from All Souls Day. They are in our hearts at every Mass cele-brated at OLMC.

    May God bless you,

    Father Andrew

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated, looked to the Amer-ican colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, princi-pally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed marriage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from univer-sity, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s when the Republic was formed, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today’s readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us—both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God.” That same confi-dence appears in Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalo-nians. “The Lord is faithful,” he testifies; “he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.” In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God’s pro-tection will endure. The children of God whom God guards, Jesus says, will live forever like angels. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PERSPECTIVE We must often draw the comparison of time and eternity. This is the remedy of all our troubles. How small will the present moment appear when we en-ter that great ocean! —St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
