Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, “He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection in mind; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been super-fluous and foolish to pray for the dead. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought.” (2 Maccabees 12:43-45)

At this time of the year we remember in a special way our beloved ones who have gone to eternity. Both days – the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed unite the pilgrim-age Church on earth with the Church in heaven. Even though our beloved passed away they are still in our hearts and prayers. Many of them inspire us to the life of love, of faith, of hope. The Church is aware that there are many more saints than the catalog of canonized saints offers us. Many of them are not known to the world, but they are really saints in the eyes of God. Moreover, the number of those who were canonized is so big that we do have not enough days in a year to honor every one with a special feast. That was the reason for the establishment of Solemnity of All Saints. The catalog is still growing! We treat many of our beloved deceased as saints, they are examples of love and dedication, righteousness and gentleness. We pray for them and they pray for us. This is a holy exchange of intersessions. On All Souls Day – The Commemoration of All the Faithful Depart-ed, we will pray at 11 o’clock Mass (Saturday) for all our deceased, especially for those who passed away during the last year. Their names are written in a special book presented in the front of the altar. We also put the envelopes with names of deceased in a basket near the book. We will keep them in our intentions during the month of November. Students from our Religious Education Program invite all of us--all ages--to attend the Festival of Saints – early afternoon on Saturday, November 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Costume contest at 1:15 p.m. Dress up as your favorite saint! Mass and Memorial Requests While we try our best to honor all Mass Intentions, all Mass requests must be completed at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance due to various printing deadlines. Certain dates may not be available. Suggested donations per Mass is $10. Please note that the Bread & Wine requests fill-up quickly and we have some dates availa-ble for 2019. The suggested donation is $50 for the Bread and Wine. There are no Sanctuary Lamp Memori-als available for the remainder of 2019. This Friday, November 1 is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be cel-ebrated at 7:30 am, 5:30 pm in Polish and 7:00 pm.

All Souls’ Day is Saturday, November 2, 2019. We will only have one mass at 11:00 am.

SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE On “All Souls’ Day”, the Church commemorates and intercedes for those who have died. Tradition here at OLMC is to invite the entire parish to remember the deadly departed by bringing pictures of their loved ones to the tables in the narthex begin-ning the weekend of October 26th and 27th. Pictures can remain on the tables and should be picked up no later than November 9th and 10th. Thank you.

Good Samaritan Ministry Oct. 29 We meet Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Hayes Center. This ministry start-ed here 28 years ago, and was called the Society of St. Vincent de Paul after a national organiza-tion that helps people in need. Then 17 years ago, the ministry actually joined the Society. But now we are simply a parish ministry once more. Our new name is the Good Samaritan Ministry, after the parable Jesus told about the Samar-itan who was a neighbor to the robbers’ victim by treating him with mercy. Anna Gerlach, designed a logo for us that beautifully reflects Jesus’ direction to go and do likewise. A neighbor holds the hand of an-other neighbor who needs mercy, and the two hands form a heart, showing the call to love God and neigh-bor.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Why does domestic vio-lence persist? Domestic vi-olence continues to prevail

because of societal attitudes, laws and inadequate understanding – they do not recognize this violence as wrong.

Must Catholics remain in a marriage where violence occurs? The U. S. Cath-olic Bishops state: “Violence against women, inside or outside the home, is never justified, and it is a sin and often a crime…. No one is expected to stay in an abusive marriage.”

What if a person was married in the Catholic Church? People married in the Church who have suffered abuse can apply to have their marriage annulled, since abuse is a valid reason. Contact Fr. Andrew if you are interested or have questions regarding this process.

Where can a victim of abuse call for help with emergency shelter, counsel-ing or legal assistance? Please call the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline at 877-863-6338.

Eucharistic Adoration Nov. 1 Adoration is this First Friday, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass on the solemnity of All Saints, and ends at 3 p.m. with the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Benediction. St. Alphonsus Liguori said, “True, Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere, for He has made the promise, ‘Ask, and you shall receive’, but He has revealed to His servants that those who visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament will obtain a more abundant measure of grace. Certainly amongst all devotions, after that of receiving the sacraments, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament holds the first place, is the most pleas-ing to God, and the most useful to ourselves.”
