THEME OF THE DAY Jesus fulfills the prophet’s words as he begins to preach the good news in Galilee. He thus manifests himself as the Savior. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, you sent your Son to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of your Spirit that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive, through Jesus Christ, your son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON Isaiah 9:1-4 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan--The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 27 Pg. 75 SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe's household have
Welcome to Zion Lutheran Church! In Jesus’ name we welcome you to worship today. May God bless you through his Word of grace and give you the peace and joy that come only from Jesus!

informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel-- not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching, preaching, and healing every disease. Alleluia. (Matthew 4:23) GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-23 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali-- to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. Bulletins & Flowers
If you would like to make a donation by
dedicating the bulletins to a loved one,
just put $5.00 in an envelope with the
pertinent information and drop it in the
box in the fellowship hall. Also, write
your name on the wall chart next to the
box. Please note that our policy is that
there can be more than one dedication
per Sunday. This way you never miss your
special date. If you would like to make a
dedication with flowers then you can
order the flowers yourself and let the
church office know you are bringing them
in. You would need two vases for the altar
and single vases can be put on the organ
or piano.
Bulletins
The bulletins this morning are in memory

What it means to be Truly Lutheran: Grace Alone
Grace is one of those big, beautiful Bible words. As with all big, beautiful Bible words, while it is an immensely comforting concept, it has also been misunderstood and mis-applied throughout history. Roman Catholicism has traditionally taught that grace is a quality that God injects into people so that they can obey his will and earn his bless-ings. Others try to limit the power of grace, teaching that grace can only get a person so far; we have to apply ourselves to doing acts of love or making the right decision for Jesus to finish the job. Grace, however, is a quality in God. In fact, it defines who the true God is and what he does. Throughout the Old Testament, when God’s characteris-tics are listed, grace is usually near the top of the list. For example, when God revealed himself to Moses on Mount Sinai, he declared, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6). The standard catechism definition of grace is “God’s undeserved love.” Yet grace is deeper than that. It is the love that moves God to act for those who cannot act for themselves and need his loving action. God acts in grace simply because God wants to act in grace. That is who God is and what God does. Martin Luther defined grace this way: “Grace means the favor by which God accepts us, forgiving sins and justifying freely through Christ” (Luther’s Works Vol. 12, p. 376). True Lutherans confess that it is by grace alone that we have been rescued from the curse and condemnation of sin (Romans 3:23,24). It is by grace alone that we have been given new life as one of God’s children (Ephesians 2:4,5). It is by grace alone that we have been given the gift of eter-nal life (John 3:16). The Formula of Concord states this clearly and precisely. “We unan-imously believe, teach, and confess the following about the righteousness of faith before God. . . . A poor sinful person is justified before God, that is, absolved and declared free and exempt from all his sins and from the sentence of well-deserved condemnation, and is adopted into sonship and inheritance of eternal life, without any merit or worth of his own. This happens without any preceding, present, or subsequent works, out of pure grace, because of the sole merit, complete obedience, bitter suffer-ing, death, and resurrection of our Lord Christ alone” (III:9). This is what makes grace such a big, beautiful, comforting Bible word. Our forgiveness, our right standing before God, and our eternal home in heaven are certain and secure entirely “out of pure grace.” That pure grace is centered in Jesus’ completed work for us. Grace alone means that our salvation, from beginning to end, is accomplished. True Lutherans understand this, proclaim it, confess it, and find comfort and confidence in grace alone.

Note To Visitors We sing the Psalms! Before the service it might help to read through the instructions on page 63 of the hymnal.
Personal Prayers for Worship may be found on pages 10-11 of the hymnal.
If your child becomes restless, that’s okay....We love having children in worship at Zion. Feel free to step into the fellowship hall or to use the cry room near the west entry until your little one settles. There are speakers in both areas.
Restrooms are at the west end entry area also. Changing tables for babies are in each.
Holy Communion Holy Communion is celebrated on the first and the third Sundays of each month (and the Mondays after). In the Lord’s Supper, our Savior offers unworthy sinners a personal pledge of forgiveness of sins through His body and blood. As He draws repentant sinners to himself, he also draws them into a special bond of fellowship with one another. In the WELS, we demonstrate this special fellowship bond in what is called “close communion.” Thus, if you have never communed with us before, we ask that you first speak with our pastor. He will share with you the steps toward establishing communion fellowship. Thank you for respecting our practice. Personal preparation help is found on page 156 in the hymnal.
Our Mission Statement
As a family of believers in Christ and members of His Kingdom, our congregation exists to worship, praise and honor the Triune God, share His pure Gospel message, encourage one another to grow stronger in faith through daily use of the Word, and urge each other to demonstrate such faith in daily living.
