Damaged shuttle tile to get closer look: NASA

WASHINGTON, 21 May—NASA plans to take acloser look Saturday at a damaged heat shield tileon the underbelly of the space shuttle Endeavour, but mission managers downplayed the inspectionas no cause for concern.

After mission managers closely examined sevenchipped tiles on the underside of the orbiter, theydecided that just one needs a focused inspection, according to deputy shuttle programme managerLeroy Cain.

This NASA photo obtained shows theEndeavour as it began the nine-minute

Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver, or ‘backflip,’ onits last visit to the Inernational Space Station on

18 May. NASA plans to go ahead with afocused inspection of a heat shield tile that wasdamaged during the shuttle Endeavour’s ascentinto orbit, the US space agency said on Friday.

“There is nothing alarming here and we arereally not concerned. We are doing what weunderstand and know that we need to go do in thesescenarios,” Cain said. Astronauts will maneuverthe shuttle’s robotic arm to get a better view of thearea with a digital camera and laser.

The chunks were likely gouged out by errantfoam or ice, and may be repaired by astronautsduring a spacewalk if needed.

“This is one that we feel pretty confident thatwe are going to be able to clear it once we get somehigher fidelity data,” Cain said.

The shuttle Columbia disintegrated in 2003during its fiery re-entry toward Earth after its heatshield was damaged by a piece of foam that brokeoff the external fuel tank during launch, weakeningthe shuttle’s protective cover.

NASA has taken care to closely examine theshuttle’s heat shield after liftoff ever since.

Endeavour blasted off on its final missionMonday with six astronauts on board — fiveAmericans and one Italian — and docked at the ISSon Wednesday in the second to last mission ever byan American space shuttle.

The US program is set to end after the launchof Atlantis, set for 8 July.

Wolbachia bacteria kill mosquito thatspreads malaria!

WASHINGTON, 21 May — Resear-chers at the Johns Hopkins BloombergSchool of Public Health have foundthat Wolbachia bacteria, which infectmany insects including mosquitoes, reduce parasite levels and kill themosquito that spreads malaria.

Wolbachia do not naturally infectAnopheles mosquitoes, which are thetype that spreads malaria to humans.

But the researchers after artificialinfection with different Wolbachiastrains found that it can significantlyreduce levels of the human malariaparasite, Plasmodium falciparum, inthe mosquito, Anopheles gambiae.

The investigators also determinedthat one of the Wolbachia strainsrapidly killed the mosquito after it fedon blood. According to the

NEW YORK, 21 May—It was 1964. Beatlemania ruled. Two daysafter their momentous debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” the Fab Fourboarded a train from New York for Washington, DC, for their first USconcert. An enterprising 18-year-old Mike Mitchell was there, a presspass in hand, shooting photographs just feet away and even jumpingonto the stage for the group’s brief pre-concert press call.

Forty-seven years later, Mitchell has made 50 silver gelatin printsfrom his negatives of the event and the Beatles’ 3 Sept, 1964, performanceat the Baltimore Civic Centre. He’s offering them for sale at Christie’sNew York auction house on 20 July.

The total pre-sale estimate is $100,000; the images will be soldindividually. Mitchell laughs when he describes the scene at the indoorarena that night — not only of screaming fans but also of his unrestrictedaccess to the stage. No cordoned-off media pens, no tight security. “Itwas a long time ago. Things weren’t that way then,” the 65-year-oldsaid in a telephone interview from Washington, where he lives andworks as an art photographer. “It was as low-tech as the concert itself. The concert was in a sports venue and the sound system was the soundsystem of a sports venue.”—Internet

TORVAIANICA, (Italy), 21 May—SimoneArrigoni of Italy has set an apnea divingrecord by completing 13 underwater loops, pushed by two dolphins named Paco andMarco, at a marine centre in Torvaianica,Italy.

Arrigoni broke his own record bycompleting the circuits, or ‘voltas’ as he callsthem, in one minute and 53 seconds using thedynamic apnea technique, which involvesholding your breath.

He previous record was of 12 ‘voltas’ inone minute 42 seconds.

‘Voltas’ is a Portuguese term used by thediver to define the circles that he constructs ashe is pushed along by the dolphins.

The task is made more difficult as it requiresabsolute synchronisation with the animals.

And the dolphins are required to surfaceat least twice during the test in order to breathe, while the diver remains under the surface in afixed position.

“The trainers at Zoomarine have taught tome to listen to the dolphins and that theyconverse with each other in order to correctthe position during the test,” The Daily Mailquoted Arrigoni, as saying.—Internet

JAKARTA, 21 May—More Indonesians are heading touniversities in China, and the trend is expected to continue asmore Chinese universities offer English-medium courses -eliminating the need for Mandarin-language proficiency.

Cost is another reason why more Indonesians chooseChina instead of traditional destinations like Australia, Europeand the United States. Helen Lim is among thousands of youngIndonesians who are taking Mandarin-language classes inJakarta. They are preparing to study in China. And some - likeMs Lim - are taking post-graduate courses to tap on the MiddleKingdom’s growing economic clout. Ms Lim said: “We allknow about China’s economic explosion. That is the reasonwhy I plan to study there; get their knowledge and apply it inIndonesia.”

Another Indonesian student, Recky Andrianus, said: “Myfather’s business is Tour and Travel. Automatically, languageis very important.” Others like Belinda Ma see this as an

opportunity to pursue a career in world’s secondbiggest economy.

She said: “I might stay.”The majority of Indonesian Chinese do not

speak Mandarin or any of the Chinese-dialects- a consequence of a decades-long anti-Chinesepolicy imposed during President Suharto’s rule.

The policy was abandoned in 2002,following political reform in Indonesia.

The Forest De-partment of the Ministry ofForestry was conser-vingand regenerating man-grove forests in coopera-tion with related depart-ments and organiza-tions,international organiza-tions, and social organiza-tions. Mammals’ large brainsevolved for smell

skulls of tiny, very earlymammals.—INTERNET

LONDON, 21 May—Ahighly developed sense ofsmell kick-started the de-velopment of mammals' bigbrains. Scientists used veryhigh-resolution scanning tostudy the skulls of two of theearliest known mammalspecies. Comparing theshape of their brain cases tothose of slightly earlieranimals, or "pre-mammals",revealed that the first brain

areas to over-develop werethose associated with thesense of smell.

The findings are pub-lished in Science. An im-proved sense of smell mayhave allowed our tiny, furry ancestors to hunt atnight. The researcherswere able to create 3Dimages of prehistoric ani-mals' brains using the lat-est computed tomography,or CT, scanning methods."Before CT, one had tobreak open a fossil to get tothe internal anatomy,"explained Professor Timo-thy Rowe from theUniversity of Texas at Aus-tin, one of the researchersinvolved in the study.
