Past week proves deadly forTaleban as over 70 militants

killed in Afghanistan KABUL, 19 Oct—The past week has proved deadly

for Taleban militants in Afghanistan as over 70 of theoutfit’s fighters including some commanders have beenkilled. In the latest wave of conflicts with security forces, six Taleban fighters were killed as they came in contactwith troops in Badghis Province of northern Afghani-stan on Sunday afternoon.

“Taleban rebels attacked a convoy of NATO-ledforces on the road leading to provincial capital QalaiNow today at 03:00 pm local time (1030 GMT) andtroops returned fire killing six militants including theircommander Mullah Abdul Hakim,” military spokes-man in the region Abdul Basir Ghori told Xinhua.

On Saturday eight militants were killed during a jointoperation of Afghan and NATO troops in the southernUruzgan province while three others had been arrested onthe same day in the northern Baghlan Province.—Xinhua

SHANGHAI, 19 Oct—Thiscity of 20 million rose fromthe sea and grew into amodern showcase, withskyscrapers piercing theclouds, atop tidal flats fedby the mighty YangtzeRiver.

Now Shanghai’s futuredepends on finding ways toprevent the same watersfrom reclaiming it.

Global warming andmelting glaciers and polarice sheets are raising sealevels worldwide, leavingtens of millions of peoplein coastal areas and on low-

lying islands vulnerableto flooding and otherweather-related catastro-phes.

Shanghai, altituderoughly 3 meters (10 feet)above sea level, is amongdozens of great world cit-ies — including London,Miami, New York, NewOrleans, Mumbai, Cairo,Amsterdam and Tokyo —threatened by sea levelsthat now are rising twice asfast as projected just a fewyears ago, expanding fromwarmth and meltwater. Es-timates of the scale and tim-

ing vary, but StefanRahmstorf, a respected ex-pert at Germany’s PotsdamInstitute, expects a 1-metre(3-foot) rise in this centuryand up to 5 meters (15 feet)over the next 300 years.

Chinese cities areamong the largest and mostthreatened. Their hugepopulations — the YangtzeRiver Delta region alonehas about 80 million peo-ple — and their rapidgrowth into giant industrial, financial and shipping cen-tres could mean massivelosses from rising sea lev-els, experts say.

The sea is steadily ad-vancing on Shanghai, taint-ing its freshwater suppliesas it turns coastal land andgroundwater salty, slowingdrainage of the area’s heav-ily polluted flood basin andeating away at the preciousdelta soils that form thecity’s foundations.

BEIJING, 19 Oct — One week afterthe impact of the LCROSS probe,NASA scientists have finally found adebris plume created by the impact inthe data, proving their moon strike

crater, named Cabeus, shortly after thespace agency’s Centaur rocket struck on9 Oct.

The debris plume was captured by theLCROSS ultraviolet/visible and near in-fra-red spectrometer. Its signature wasfaint, but distinct.

Before the impact, many observerstold the media that they were disap-pointed because of the lack of specta-cle. But scientists said the mission wascarried out for “a scientific purpose, notto put on a fireworks display for the pub-lic.” Now that the plume was found, sci-entists hope that the analysis of it willshow signs of water ice ejected from theCabeus crater.

The magnitude, form, and visibil-ity of the debris plume offer more infor-mation about the concentrations andstate of the material at the impact site.

However, Michio Kaku, a profes-sor at the City College of New York, saidthat beautiful pictures captured are notworth 79 million US dollars. “To be aspectacular success, we had to find largequantities of underground ice.”

Vermont willow harvest promisescheap biomass fuel

MIDDLEBURY, 19 Oct —MiddleburyCollege used to heat its buildings withoil, then switched to wood chips. Now ithas planted a sustainable and relativelycheap fuel source — willow shrubs —that could help cut demand on the state’sforests. With a nine-acre patch of the fast-growing willows, the college is conduct-ing a biomass energy experiment thatseeks to answer the question: What ifwood chip-burning heat systems lead tothe deforestation of Vermont?

Willows, which grow faster than othertrees and branch out when pruned, maybe the answer — and may be a resourcefor other cold-weather states, too. So JackByrne, director of sustainability for thecollege, and business services directorTom Corbin have turned into farmers ofsorts, planting tightly packed rows ofwillows in a field west of Middlebury’scampus.

The question of biomass fuel supplyhas taken on new urgency for the collegesince last winter, when the exclusive lib-eral arts school opened a new boiler sys-

tem that heats about 100 campus build-ings, running turbines that meet about afifth of the college’s electrical demand.

The system, in a glass-fronted build-ing in the middle of campus, runs on a“gasifier,” heating wood chips and ex-tracting carbon monoxide and other gasesthat are then burned in the boiler.

“We use our buildings to teach asmuch as we can,” Byrne said. “Wewanted students to be aware that whenthey turn up a thermostat, there’s a con-nection to a tree getting cut down.”
