A MESSAGE FROM OUR RETIRING
HUMAN CONCERNS DIRECTOR, MARY HOFFING
2 Saint Anne Church • May 8, 2016 • stannebarrington.org
A WORD OF THANKS
I was a Minister of Care for 13 years, ten of which I served as the Director of Human Concerns,
specifically serving in the Bereavement Ministry, the Ministry of Praise and the Ministry of Care
which included The Garlands, Lake Barrington Woods, Sunrise Assisted Living, Alden Estates,
Journey Care, Greencastle, Good Shepherd Hospital and the home bound of our parish.
I felt very blessed during those years of service, viewing my work as a special privilege, called to
reach out to comfort the sick and grieving on a daily basis. I considered it a true gift to be able to
broaden my own sense of compassion and care for so many and to serve those who were part of the
120 archdiocesan-mandated ministers who brought the Eucharist, prayer and love to so many
parishioners.
My plans for the future are focused on spending more time with my husband, Lee, my children and
grandchildren who are living in various places throughout the U.S. and even Scotland. In leaving
my ministry, I want to thank everybody – all the priests, especially Father Bernie and Father Tom
who supported me with their dedication to the ministry, the entire staff and all the wonderful men
and women with whom I served and who were so committed and helpful, never saying ‘no’ to any
project or request.
In closing, I loved my work here and can only say that every task and every minute was a ‘ministry
of love.’ On leaving, my thoughts and prayers are with each of you, the family of Saint Anne.
God bless you! I leave with much love and gratitude in my heart.

LITURGY CORNER—Edited by Rory Cooney STANDING
In the celebration of the Mass, we raise our hearts, minds and voices to God. As creatures composed of
body as well as spirit, we also pray with our bodies.
During Mass, we assume different postures: standing, kneeling and sitting. Through these postures, we
participate in the liturgy more attentively.
Did you ever notice that the Eucharistic Prayer thanks God that ‘we may stand in your presence and serve
you’ but we are all kneeling? The Latin verb is indeed ‘astare’, to stand near. In antiquity, everyone stood
for the Eucharistic Prayer. From the earliest days of the Church, standing has been understood as
the stance of those who are risen with Christ and seek the things that are above. (The Greek word for
‘resurrection’ might literally be translated ‘not not-standing’ [anastasis].) When we stand for prayer, we
are assuming our stature before God as a people redeemed by the blood of Christ. We stand
when the celebrant and the other ministers process into the church to begin acting like who we are: the
risen body of Christ. We stand for the Gospel because we acknowledge that it is Christ himself speaking
to us when it is proclaimed. The bishops of the United States have chosen standing as the normal posture
for the reception of Holy Communion in this country.
More next time about kneeling, sitting and processing.

Kelly’s program Decision Point which has been well received by the students and catechists. Students
are also expected to volunteer in the community over the two years. Second year candidates are
required to participate in the Spiritus Retreat, a one day interactive retreat, held at the Jesuit Retreat

BLOOD DRIVE—TODAY This is the time of the year when new life is springing up all around us. It’s a
blessing to feel a part of it, but not everyone shares this good feeling. Some of our
friends and neighbors are in serious medical need, and they need the help that
only we can give them. If you have the blessing of good health, share it. You can
multiply what you have been given by sharing your blessings with the members
of our community who are now in need.
Today, Sunday, May 8th, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the school cafeteria, Saint
Anne is sponsoring our spring blood drive. PLEASE DONATE.
Our last blood drive was very successful. We saw many new donors, and over 100 critically ill patients
were helped. That’s the spirit of Saint Anne! As our community ages, we require more complex medical
procedures so the need for blood increases. There is no substitute for blood. Without our help, local
shortages would be inevitable. We need your help.
If you haven’t donated before, it’s easy. Bring your driver’s license. You must be at least 17 years old and
weigh at least 110 pounds. Most medications such as blood pressure medicine or aspirin will not cause
disqualification. The entire process takes about 40 minutes from start to finish, and the blood collection
itself takes 15 minutes or less.
This will only take a little time this morning, so please become someone’s hero and discover the particular
joy of giving blood. Blood is truly the gift of life.

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story
The bishops of Illinois have made The Ascension of the Lord more prominent by transferring its
celebration from Thursday to the 7th Sunday of Easter Time where it is more easily seen as a clear bridge
between the resurrection of Jesus (Luke 24:46) and the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the communities
gathered in Jerusalem (Luke 24:49). Perhaps more graphically, it highlights the end of the Sundays of
Easter Time, the period we call mystagogy – that period of extended focus on the Jesus who is the Christ1,
the Risen One, the One who not only appeared long ago to the community after the resurrection but the
One who is present to us not as that Jesus of history but as the Jesus of faith; it is Jesus the Christ who
sustains us and commissions us to go forth to give witness; it is Jesus the Christ who empowers us and
remains with us until the end of time. Recall especially Rory Cooney’s Liturgy Corner in the Clarion on
Easter 2 and 3 in which one of his salient points is that mystagogy continues every day of our lives but
particularly when we engage in ritual in a way that allows the stuff of our lives to meet the power of Word
and Sacrament.
We ended the 6th Sunday of Easter with the clear idea that we were friends with the Christ in a very
intimate way. Chosen by the Christ, we heard and came to know the words of John’s Jesus: Those who
love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them
(Jn 14:23, NRSV). This farewell gift of peace, this indwelling in us of the Father and the Son is further
assured to us by the constant teaching and promptings of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, it reminds us of the
cultural mindset of those times: outside of the intimacy of group-oriented solidarity, there is no survival.
However, group solidarity with its accompanying safety exists for one purpose: for mission! We are to
give witness to the realness of the Christ by the manner in which we live our lives. In both of the stories
that Luke tells in today’s First and Fourth periscopes, we hear those words spoken as though they were
directed to us: we cannot stand around looking upward at the sky – empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts
1:8a), we are to be witnesses to this intimacy we have with the Christ but in an inclusive fashion: (v.8b) in
Jerusalem, [where God dwells] throughout Judea [where there is a concentration of Jews] and Samaria, [where
apostate Jews live] (v.8d) and to the ends of the earth. [where the rest of humankind lives]. At vv.47, 48 in
his gospel, Luke repeats: … that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. Think of the impact of these words on those in
Luke’s community: they must be astounded to hear emphasized that God is not an exclusive God;
everyone (all the nations) is a recipient of God’s grace through them (through us)!

Sharing the Living Story
See the song (psalm 47) we sing in praise of God’s sovereignty over the earth at vv.3, 7, 8 and 9. It is this
sovereignty, this power, about which all the readings today speak.
At Acts v. 1, the Holy Spirit gives knowledge and enlightenment to the apostles and at v.8, the same spirit
gives them power to enable them to be witnesses for the Christ in Jerusalem and beyond. In the Ephesians
pericope at v.17, Paul begins prayers for the members of that community to be enlightened by the Spirit o f
wisdom and revelation so that their inner hearts may be opened to the fullness of God’s expressed desire that all
will accept God’s intended inheritance for them. It was God’s power which raised Jesus from the dead
and that seated him at God’s right; it is that same power that is available to us who believe and act in
witness to the Christ as Luke describes in his Gospel today.
This takes us to the great Feast of Pentecost the following weekend when the mandate to the disciples (to
us!) is made explicitly clear.
So What?
It is tempting and certainly easier to stay in the historical mode,
looking in wonder at the events that occurred back then.
When tough times come (or perhaps it’s even harder when easy times are upon us?),
how tangible to us is this intimacy and solidarity we have with the Christ?
At v.49, Jesus says: behold , I am sending the promise o f my Father upon you.
Can we describe times when we realized that we had the power of the Holy Spirit?
Can we recall what it was we did when we had that realization?
1 This is a title, not a name. The Christ is used about the post-resurrection Jesus and therefore
clearly denotes: the Christos, the one who is anointed, the Messiah.

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments
ranks among the most important gifts that we have.
We look forward to sharing these celebrations with
those who, in some way, are part of our community.
Therefore, please note the following:
Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local
hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a
minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at 847.382.2148.
Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your
family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance
into our faith community.
Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing
their 1st child
Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic
Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint
Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before
scheduling Baptism
Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at
Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before
scheduling Baptism
Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the
meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at
847.382.5300.
Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation
process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the
wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as
soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a
requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time
of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.
First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are
typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be
registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation
program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and
Education office at 847.620.3067.
Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school.
Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the
two-year preparation program. For more information, call the
PATHS office at 847.620.3072.
Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by
appointment.
Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to
belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs,
perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means
to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and
honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you.
Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding
the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
Registration: To enter into our faith community, please
attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the
Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st
Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when
there are no sessions. For further information, call the parish
office at 847.382.5300.
