OUR EFFORTS AT SEA

Operation Blue OrchidDuring reconstruction efforts in Iraq, our Navy played a crucial role by safeguarding the Al Basra Oil Terminal, which accounts for over 90 per cent of Iraq’s oil input. Over a five-year period, five Landing Ships Tank were deployed to conduct area patrols, boarding operations and training for the Iraqi Navy.

Rim of the Pacific ExerciseSince 2008, our Navy has been participating in the world’s largest multinational maritime exercise. In 2012, the frigate RSS Formidable conducted a simultaneous warshot firing of two Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles. In 2014, a live firingof the Aster missile was conducted by RSS Intrepid under realistic operational settings.

As a Naval Warfare System Engineer, you will have the opportunity to travel around the world to participate in conferences, courses, as well as bilateral and multilateral exercises. You will also have the opportunity to pursue academic and professional upgrading in local and international institutes. Above are some of the places where you may be called upon to play a role inthe larger international community.

SCHOLARSHIP

SAF Engineering Scholarship

SAF Engineering Award

I worked in the wafer-manufacturing industry for 18 years before joining the Navy. Currently, I am a Senior Engineer in the Force Readiness Squadron, which means I lead a team in providing logistical support to our ships, to help ensure their operational readiness 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What encouraged me to make the movewas the Military Domain Experts Scheme. Under this scheme, I have a welcome sense of job stability, and also receive a rank

and salary based on my years of relevant engineering experience.

The Navy is a dynamic organisation that cares about its employees and providesthem with the resources to do their jobswell. I’m also able to play a vital role in safeguarding Singapore, and I’m confident that with the right attitude and dedication, you too will find it very meaningful and fulfilling in broadening your perspectives.

ME5 Bilson Soh Ting HongSenior Engineer, Systems Readiness Engineering Centre (Network and Sensors)

My Navy career has been a constantly forward-moving journey. I began as aNaval Warfare System Expert 13 years ago, and received a Continuous Learning and Academic Sponsorship Scheme (CLASS) Award to study at the University of Adelaide. From serving as a Combat Systems Engineer with the Landing Ship Tank RSS Persistence, to my command appointment as an instructor in the Officer Cadet School, the Navy has rewarded me with a diverse set of experiences that has helped in my personal and professional development.

My journey with the Navy has also given me many memorable experiences, such as when I was deployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf to play a part in the multinational reconstruction effort of Iraq.

If you are adventurous and keen to serve your country, I encourage you to consider a career with the Navy. The journey will not alwaysbe smooth sailing, but through persistenteffort and team perseverance, you will findit fulfilling and satisfying in the long run.

ME4 Joyce Tan Wan JunDivisional Officer, Midshipman Wing, Officer Cadet School

As you live and learn on board our ships, you will work and train alongside your crew-mates. These experiences form the fabric of the Navy family spirit, a unique sense of camaraderie at the centre of all our endeavours. Your crew-mates will be like a second family to you, one that bridges different ranks and vocations, and promotes tight bonds of friendship for life.

ME6 Toh Tee YangHead Logistics Organisation and Plans Branch, Naval Logistics Department

Since young, I’ve aspired to enter military service. So when the opportunity to join the Republic of Singapore Navy came, I was enthused to experience it myself.

My engineering background helped me to implement the Military Domain Experts Scheme, and serve as a principal engineer in designing the new Littoral Mission Vessels. Together with our partners, we managed to create a smarter, faster and sharper class of ships.

Not only have I experienced different aspects of the Navy, I was also able to get accredited as a Chartered Engineer by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. I also had the privilege of attending renowned engineering and maritime conferences.

These achievements showed me the importance of leadership, professionalism and creative thinking. I strongly encourage anyone who has an interest in exploring new frontiers to join the Navy. It is a career like no other.
