Definition

[Dictionary]

Lacking nothing especially not damaged

Intact rock contains neither joints nor hair cracks

Intact Rock vs Rock Mass The insitu rock, or rock mass, is

comprised of intact rock separated by discontinuities such as joints, bedding planes, folds, sheared zones and faults.

Significantly lower strength than intact rock.

Intact rock properties affect stress-induced modes of behavior, durability and excavation effort.

Rock mass properties greatly affected by discontinuities and weathering.

Classification

Strength Deformation

Index Test Chemical weathering

The amount of applied stress at rock failure and rupture

Usually expressed as strain, a dimensionless quantity expressing the amount of deformation in terms of the original dimensions

Alternative method by rock material strength index text has been commonly adopted.

The weathering process will change physical properties and chemical composition of the rock. The presence of discontinuities influences the strength and deformability of rock to great extend.

StrengthUniaxial compressive strength

Probably the most widely performed test on the rock to investigate uniaxial deformation and mechanical properties of rocks

Shear strength A term used to describe the strength of a

material or component against the type of yield or structural failure where the material or component fails in shear

Tensile strength/Brazilian test A method of determining the tensile strength

of concentrate using a cylinder which splits across the vertical diameter

DeformationStatic Elastic Modulus

Young Modulus The ratio of therelative contraction strain, or transverse

strain(normal to the applied load) divided by the relative extension strain, or axial strain(in direction of the applied load)

Poisson's Ratio Describes the material's response to linear strain

Deformation

Dynamic Elastic Modulus

Young ModulesPoisson's RatioShear Modulus

Describes the material's response to shearing strains

Index Test

Point load test

Used for testing rock, aggregate and core samples as well as out crop specimen in their original shape. Uniaxial compressive strength for rock specimen can also be predicted approximately

Index Test

Swiss Hammer (Schmidt Hammer)

The hammer measures the rebound of a spring loaded mass impacting against the surface of the sample

Index Test

Slake Durability Test of Rocks

Determining resistance of rocks to abrasion and

dry/wetting
