Intact Rock vs Rock Mass The insitu rock, or rock mass, is

comprised of intact rock separated by discontinuities such as joints, bedding planes, folds, sheared zones and faults.

Significantly lower strength than intact rock.

Intact rock properties affect stress-induced modes of behavior, durability and excavation effort.

Rock mass properties greatly affected by discontinuities and weathering.

The amount of applied stress at rock failure and rupture

Usually expressed as strain, a dimensionless quantity expressing the amount of deformation in terms of the original dimensions

Alternative method by rock material strength index text has been commonly adopted.

The weathering process will change physical properties and chemical composition of the rock. The presence of discontinuities influences the strength and deformability of rock to great extend.
