Committees, Club Sponsorships and School-Wide Programs

During my tenure at Cumberland I have served on the following committees, administrative programs and club sponsorships.

The Presidential Scholarship Research Committee. This committee oversees and evaluates the presidential research projects of outstanding students from all departments of the college. I served on this committee from Fall 1995 to Spring 2009 at the University of the Cumberlands and helped revise some of the policies and procedures of the program.

The International Studies Committee. This committee evaluates student applications for international studies, approving or rejecting students’ petitions for such work. The committee also evaluates and approves/rejects instructors’ proposals for courses to be taught outside the United States through the International Studies program. I served on this committee Fall 1995-Spring 1997.

Insights. This is a beginning-student orientation program, designed to introduce in-coming students to college life and work, and to increase student retention through the first year and beyond. I have been an insights instructor from Fall 1997-Spring 2006.

Philosophy Club. Philosophy Club is a student organization designed to encourage and facilitate philosophical discussion among students and other members of the Cumberland

10

community. It has elected officers and usually holds 3 to 4 public meetings each semester. I have been the faculty sponsor of this club since Fall 1995. Since then our membership has steadily expanded and attendance of public meetings has greatly increased.

Faculty Development. Fall 2001 through Fall 2004, I served on the Faculty Development committee, whose function is to allocate funds for potential faculty academic and professional development.

QEP Committee. Spring 2004-2006. The QEP committee envisioned and now seeks to implement the Quality Enhancement Plan of University of the Cumberlands. This plan is a required component of SACS accreditation. In Spring/Summer 2006 this plan was approved by SACS and our institution is in the process of implementing the program. Our plan is to incorporate “Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum.”

Promotion and Tenure Committee. Fall 2005-2007. This committee oversees evaluations of and makes recommendations to the school administration concerning faculty promotions and tenure.

Scholarship Support Task Force. Fall 2007-2009. This task force seeks to enhance financial and administrative support for faculty scholarship at University of the Cumberlands.

Core Curriculum Committee. Spring 2010. Fall 2011-current. This committee worked toward finalizing UMHB’s core curriculum for 2012. I served as a replacement for Dr. Leroy Kemp while he was in England with the UMHB London Program.

Constitution and By-Laws Committee. Fall 2010. This task force/committee shaped and proposed revisions to the UMHB Faculty Assembly Constitution and By-Laws. Proposed revisions were passed by the Faculty Assembly in January 2011.

Academic I. Q. (Institutional Quality) Council. Fall 2010-current. This task force oversees academic assessment for the university at University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

Departmental Work

During my stay at Cumberland, I was involved in a wide-variety of administrative chores for the department of religion and philosophy. Many of these are simply standards elements of the daily routine and not particularly note-worthy. However, there are some accomplishments in this regard for which I especially am proud.

11

Critical Thinking Course. I revamped the logic course, PHIL 232, naming it Critical Thinking, PHIL 332. I then proposed and received approval from both the department faculty and from the college curriculum committee to make this course an elective within the general education requirements of Cumberland. I felt this to be appropriate, particularly in light of the fact that our college mission statement directly states that one of our goals is to educate students in critical thinking.

Philosophy-Religion Major. I also proposed and designed a new major for our department–the philosophy-religion major. I sought and obtained approval for this major from our department faculty and then from the college Catalog and Curriculum committee.

Church Activities/Ministries

I am an ordained Baptist minister, ordained September 1988 by New Prospect Baptist of Hanover, Indiana. As noted above, prior to coming to Cumberland College/University of the Cumberlands, I served two separate tenures as pastor of churches in Indiana. Church is a vital part of my personal and our family life.
