IntroductionPurpose Of The Handbook

The Alvin J. Briesemeister athletic program is an integral part of the total school experience for both boys and girls. It offers a variety of sports and activities to all students who have the potential skill and the desire to participate.

The policies, procedures, and regulations in this handbook are in compliance with school policies and administrative procedures. They are designed to provide experiences that are successful for the all around athletic program.

Alvin J. Briesemeister athletes must look and act accordingly with pride and dignity at all times. The purpose of this handbook is to uphold and establish regulation and procedures throughout the school year.

This handbook is designed to encourage athletes to make choices for their well-being and safety. It also provides appropriate consequences for violations of rules. This handbook shall be used by all Alvin J. Briesemeister personnel and students in grades 7th-8th.

You, the parent/student athlete, will adhere and be responsible and accountable for all policies contained within this handbook and for any additional requirement the athletic department may add.

SISD Athletic DepartmentSeguin Athletics Vision & Philosophy

When young men and women sign up for athletics and become members of a team, they make a commitment. They are obligated to follow the rules and regulations of the program. They are not forced to participate. It is voluntary; therefore, they are expected to follow the rules of order.

Parents should strive to help their son or daughter to achieve success in athletics. Success is defined as participating at 100% of the individual’s ability. We can never expect athletes to do more than they are capable; however, we do want them to reach their fullest potential. Supportive parents can instill this desire in student athletes long after their playing days are over by seeing that the student is on time, attends practices and games, and follows the rules and regulations.

Athletic Goal and Objectives Our Goal: The student-athlete shall become a more effective citizen and productive member of society.

Our Specific Objectives: The student-athlete shall learn:

1. To work with others: In a democratic society, a person must develop self-discipline, respect for authority, and the spirit of hard work and sacrifice. The team and its objectives must be placed higher than personal desires.

2. To be successful: Our society is very competitive. We do not always win, but we succeed when we continuously strive to do so. You can learn to accept defeat only by striving to win with earnest dedication. A successful person has a desire to excel and a “never quit” attitude.

Page 11: schools.seguin.k12.tx.usschools.seguin.k12.tx.us/.../11237/0/20192020ParentAthleteHan… · Web viewAlvin J. Briesemeister. Middle School. Parent / Athlete Handbook. 2019 – 2020.

3. To develop sportsmanship: To accept any victory or defeat like a true sportsman and knowing one has done his/her best are signs of a good sportsman. We need to develop desirable social traits, including emotional control, honesty, cooperation, and dependability. We need to respect opposing players, coaches, officials, spectators, and support groups. Treat them as you would want to be treated. Who better than they can understand all the hard work and team effort that is required?

4. To improve: Continual improvement is essential. As an athlete, you must establish a goal, and you must be committed to attaining that goal. Personal sacrifice, work ethic, accountability, and, most important, dedication are essential components in an individual’s development as a leader or teammate.

5. To enjoy athletics: It is necessary for athletes to enjoy participation, to acknowledge all of the personal rewards that derive from athletics and to give sufficiently of themselves in order to preserve the program.

6. To develop desirable personal health habits: To be an active contributing citizen, it is important to obtain a high degree of physical fitness through exercise, nutrition, and good hygiene, that can be used after your formal years of competition have been completed.

The University Interscholastic LeagueThe UIL is the governing body for all athletics in Texas public schools at the high school and junior high level. The manual for each sport is on their website. It is the coach’s responsibility to be aware of all rule changes and paperwork needs.

The UIL exists to provide educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests. The initials UIL have come to represent quality educational competition administered by school people on an equitable basis.

desires to do so. However, no student is obligated to take part in athletics, nor is participation in athletics required. It is also to be stressed that participation in the athletic program at Alvin J. Briesemeister is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Since it is a privilege, the coaching staff, in accordance with the Alvin J. Briesemeister’s policy and due process procedures, has the authority to suspend or revoke the privilege when the rules and standards are not followed.

It is important to understand that there may also be times when things do not go your way or your child’s way. Coaches make decisions based on what they believe is best for the team and the athletes. Below, are situations that will not be appropriate to discuss with the coaching staff;

Tryouts will be necessary at times for teams and cuts will be made by the head coach and the staff. All decisions made will be final.

General InformationAcademic Eligibility: In order to be eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity, a student must obtain the required minimum grade of 70 following the six-week reporting period. If a student records a grade lower than a 70, the student becomes ineligible to participate in any extracurricular activity. The student may continue to practice but excluded from playing, travelling with the team, sitting on the bench, and all school pep rallies. If the student passes ALL classes at the three-week progress period, the student may regain eligibility to participate.

Schedules: Schedules for every sport will be issued to athletes, staff, and parents as soon as each season starts. Schedules will contain date, time, site, and opponent.

Page 14: schools.seguin.k12.tx.usschools.seguin.k12.tx.us/.../11237/0/20192020ParentAthleteHan… · Web viewAlvin J. Briesemeister. Middle School. Parent / Athlete Handbook. 2019 – 2020.

Parent Pickup: Practices are scheduled daily and games are scheduled weekly. However, it is very important that parents pick up students at the appropriate time. Coaches have responsibilities after practices and games.

Quitting A Sport: Quitting a sport can be a difficult decision. Whatever the reason, medical, academics, family, or personal matters, or not having fun anymore, the decision is a concern. If you quit a sport before or during the season, a conference will be held by the coaches regarding your decision.

Communication Conferences: Pre-season meetings will be conducted for each sport to cover expectations and guidelines for the season. If at any time parents have an issue with any guideline, it is recommended to schedule a meeting in advance to discuss the matter. (24 Hour Rule) Conferences will only be during the coach’s conference.

Team SpiritSpirit means full of life, courage, and enthusiasm. Team spirit in

athletics means a team which shows wholesome enthusiasm for sports in every exercise, drill, etc., a team with courage to meet all obstacles associated with the game.

Many average teams have become CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS because of the underlying feeling of SPIRIT which was present among the players of that team.

Page 15: schools.seguin.k12.tx.usschools.seguin.k12.tx.us/.../11237/0/20192020ParentAthleteHan… · Web viewAlvin J. Briesemeister. Middle School. Parent / Athlete Handbook. 2019 – 2020.

Team spirit includes the attitudes, the desire, the cooperation, the self-sacrifice, the self-discipline, the willingness to work, and the will to win on the part of each and every athlete in the program.

If these things are present, you will never be late for practice, never miss practice, never go through drills trying to “dog it”. Practice all out, every second. Try to help other players, including the one who may be keeping you on the sideline. Never look for excuses to get out of a job. Obey training rules. Never criticize our school, coaches, or other players—not at home nor in public. Be determined that no other team will beat us.

Athletic sports are rugged games. There is no other way to coach or play them except rough and tough. If you do not possess a genuine love for all the hard, dirty tasks connected with athletics, you will need to develop that love with the understanding that these are the best sports to develop you as a person. No matter how difficult the challenge, athletic sports will help make you a winner throughout your life.

A team with spirit should always want to hustle, persevere, and run hard. Talk it up in practice, in games, and on the sidelines. If we can generate TEAM SPIRIT, enthusiasm for the games, and a desire and determination to always practice and play hard, NO ONE CAN BEAT US! WE ARE TOROS!!

Briesemeister Toros Athletic Covenant

What Alvin J. Briesemeister Middle School expects from each athlete who competes for the BLACK AND GOLD:

Page 16: schools.seguin.k12.tx.usschools.seguin.k12.tx.us/.../11237/0/20192020ParentAthleteHan… · Web viewAlvin J. Briesemeister. Middle School. Parent / Athlete Handbook. 2019 – 2020.

1 – Hustle: Work Hard, Move, Stay Busy and Stay Active To play a sport with a lot of Pride, Energy, and Effort.

*Show your pride by hustling in everything you do. Hustle to class, hustle to practice, show your desire with action not words. Seeing you hustle says it all!!2 – Show Courage: Be Brave, Be Determined, Man Up, and Have Spirit To play a sport and refusing to Never Give Up, Never Give In, and Never Give Way.

*Be courageous by working when you’re tired, in practice, on homework to make your grades, or to make the team. Courage is being able to get up and go again after you get knocked down. Don’t worry about failing; concentrate on being prepared when your chance comes.3 – Know Your Assignment: Be Positive, Be Organized, Plan, and Practice with a Purpose To play a sport with Consistency, Confidence, and Preparedness.

*Confidence comes from knowing what to do in class or on the field. Do the “little things” correctly, be consistent; respect comes to you when others know they can depend on you for a consistent effort.4 – Care About Winning: Be Competitive, Have Passion, and Have Fun To play a sport and achieving success with “Whatever It Takes”.

*Put the group’s success ahead of your personal desires. The more success we have, the more individual recognition you will receive for contributing. Don’t worry about your position, who gets the score, or how much you play; instead, strive to make every effort to help Briesemeister succeed. There is no “I” in the word team!5 – Be Loyal: Be Faithful, Be Devoted, and Be Supportive To play a sport and Trusting that your team mates need you and you need them.

*Wear Briesemeister colors proudly, be a supporter of teammates, other groups, and organizations. Make the commitment – BE A BRIESEMEISTER TORO.

Role and ResponsibilitiesAthlete’s Role

Participation in athletics is a privilege; it is not a right. Athletes are members of a team and have responsibilities to the team. Good team members put the desires and needs of the team in front of their own personal needs. Every athlete should conduct himself/herself in an appropriate manner at all times. Players are encouraged to discuss any aspect of their role on the team with their coach. All participants accept the rules and regulations published in the various activities handbook.

Parent’s Role

Parents should also keep in mind that participation is a privilege. The primary role of the parent is to support the athlete in his/her effort to participate. Participation puts many demands upon family life. Parental support for the overall program is extremely important. There are activities booster clubs and parents are encouraged to join. Parents are encouraged to contact coaches to discuss matters pertaining to athletics. Parents agree to accept the published rules of conduct for each individual activity/sport.

Coaches’ Role

Coaches are professional educators with a background in athletics. There are many demands placed upon a coach’s time. Coaches must always understand that their role is to provide an appropriate environment for athletes to achieve success. They should always provide fair and impartial evaluations of all team members. Head coaches will make all decisions as they direct their team. These areas include, but not limited to, determining playing time, positioning of players, and lettering policies. Coaches will discuss individual athletes only with the athlete’s parents. Coaches should always arrange appropriate meetings. Coaches will publish specific codes of conduct and explain these to all participants.

Social MediaStudent-athletes are high-profile representatives and their behavior is subject to scrutiny by their peers, the campus, the community, and the media. The actions of a single student-athlete can reflect positively or negatively not only on the individual student-athlete, but also on his or her team, coaches, the athletic department, and campus. Therefore, student-athletes are expected to represent themselves with honor, dignity, and integrity at all times — especially when interacting on social networking websites. The popularity of these websites (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, etc.) has rapidly grown during the last few years. These websites can serve as valuable communication tools when used appropriately. However, the use of social media has the potential to cause problems for both the student-athlete and the school environment. Almost anything student-athletes post on a social networking site may be viewed by others. Both the media and the general public are more likely to view the profiles of student-athletes than those of a regular student.

Important Suggestions & Recommendations Regarding Social Networking Sites

Some students mistakenly believe social networking websites have a veil of privacy about them and assume their profiles are viewed only by a close circle of friends and fellow students. To the contrary, the content of most of these sites is accessible by anyone in the general public unless security and privacy features are used. The public nature of these websites has created personal safety and personal welfare concerns. For example, student-athletes have been stalked or sexually harassed and assaulted as a result of their Facebook profiles. Fans of opposing teams have taunted student-athletes based on information obtained from these sites. Student-athletes should also be aware that potential employers and graduate school admissions may be affected if screened. Thus, student-athletes should be very careful about what personal information they share on the internet.

Social Media

The Athletics Department strongly recommends and advises student-athletes not to post:

Disruptive negative communication. Obscene images, information, or any other negative content that will

cause dishonor to themselves and/or any member of Alvin J. Briesemeister Middle School.

Derogatory unsportsmanlike content towards any member of Alvin J. Briesemeister Middle School or any other school.

Personal information about any member of Alvin J. Briesemeister Middle School.

Information that violates FERPA and HIPPA privacy laws.

Student-athletes at Alvin J. Briesemeister Middle School are required to abide by these guidelines.

SISD Sports Medicine / Medical Information

ATHLETIC INSURANCE POLICIES & GUIDELINES

The purpose of this section is to explain the accident insurance policy, which covers all athletes in the Seguin Independent School District. Seguin ISD carries an accident insurance policy for all students practicing for and competing in any athletic activity under the regulation and jurisdiction of the district. This policy does not pay all expenses; it is a secondary policy to any other insurance which may be covering this student and may help pay for expenses not taken care of by the student’s family insurance. It is recommended by the athletic trainers and the Athletic Director that every effort be made by the family of each student to provide a primary insurance of some kind in case of accident or injury. This will reduce the chance of financial strain in case the district insurance plan must be applied in cases of injury requiring surgery or long-term treatment. There is no need to apply for this insurance. The athletic trainers are responsible for initiating the claim process for all student athletes. Please follow the guidelines below for using the SISD Athletic Insurance Policy.

Doctor Referral Procedure

In case of an injury, parents should contact the athletic trainers at (830-372-5770 Ext: 20715) or the Athletic Office (830-401-8022) before taking their child to the doctor. Failure to do so may forfeit their rights to insurance claims covered under the SISD plan. Please note that even if the student is covered under a primary insurance and the parents do not plan on applying the district insurance policy, it is still necessary to contact the athletic trainers or athletic office before seeing a doctor. If your son or daughter requires medical attention as a result of an athletic injury, a doctor referral or hospital visit (example: Emergency Room, x-rays, etc.) will be initiated by the SISD Athletic Trainers. Except for emergency situations, should your son or daughter with an athletic injury visit any doctor or hospital without initial evaluation and referral from the SISD Athletic Trainers, SISD will not assume financial responsibility for medical bills regarding that athletic injury.

Injuries Covered by the SISD Athletic Department

Page 21: schools.seguin.k12.tx.usschools.seguin.k12.tx.us/.../11237/0/20192020ParentAthleteHan… · Web viewAlvin J. Briesemeister. Middle School. Parent / Athlete Handbook. 2019 – 2020.

Injuries that are covered by the SISD Athletic Department include: • injuries that are initially seen and referred to a physician by the SISD Athletic Trainers; • those that occur in-season or off-season (in adherence with UIL Constitution and Rules); and • those that are classified as a “medical emergency” should the athletic trainer not be available at the time of injury. 18

Injuries Not Covered by the SISD Athletic Department

Injuries that are not covered by the SISD Athletic Department include: • injury resulting in the locker room or showers (i.e., fights or horseplay); • fights that occur at practice or in games; • athletes taken to the doctor by parents, coaches, nurses, or school administrators without first consulting the Athletic Trainers; • injuries that occur during summer activities; • injuries that may occur to an athlete on school premises but are not associated with athletics; • those that occur or medical services that may result after an athlete has graduated from SISD; • those that may occur or medical services that may result after an athlete has quit or been dropped from a particular sport; • infections or diseases of any type (i.e., boils, warts, colds, flu, hepatitis, vaccination or case counseling, athlete’s foot, allergies, etc.); • injuries that result from a pre-existing condition prior to beginning participation in athletics.

Personal and School Insurance Use for Injuries

Personal insurance is to be applied initially concerning all medical bills. SISD Athletic Insurance will supplement any other hospitalization or accident insurance. Medical attention must be obtained within 30 days from the date of injury, and a properly completed claim form must be filed with the SISD Athletic Trainers within 60 days of the date of injury. It will be the responsibility of the athlete to report an injury and obtain an Accident Report. A claim form will be sent to the parent/guardian. It will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to submit the claim form to the athletic trainers and follow up on payment of bills. The school insurance will pay according to its Explanation of Benefits. Contact Jalynn Hubble at the Seguin ISD Central Administrative Office for a copy. SISD cannot legally assume responsibility of medical and/or hospital bills resulting from injury to any athlete. Expenses not covered by the policy are the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian and not the SISD.
