PASTORAL MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR RYAN MAXTED

It wasn’t long ago you may have seen the movie, “The Mask” in which an insecure, shy, and reserved banker puts on an ancient green mask and is transformed into someone who boisterously exhibits the exactly opposite personality. He becomes confident, outgoing and aggressive. The movie centers on the drama c and comedic tension created by the man wielding both personali es.

The simple fact is we all have parts of our personali es which seem less a rac ve. We may not like the part of us which can be overly drama c, bossy, insecure, selfish, impulsive, or calculated. So we try to change or alter what is projected to others by pu ng on a mask. The resul ng effect is we only let people see what we want them to see. It creates a dynamic tension because we desire for people to see and accept us as we really are, but we remain hidden to protect ourselves from hurt and rejec on. We are terrifically afraid that if people were to see us as we really are, they would reject us.

Yet, the Bible encourages us to remove our masks. James 5:16a says, “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.” This is a picture of self‐disclosure and transparency where we trust another with our true selves and allow trusted friends to see the real us without any masks. The Bible is teaching us a simple principle: There is love, healing, and acceptance available to us through friendship with other people if we are willing to take a chance, open up, and be vulnerable. There is something spiritual and profound which occurs when we allow ourselves to be seen as we really are.

I want to challenge you to consider removing the mask hiding the true you. I’m not advoca ng doing this with just anyone. Find a trusted friend with whom you are willing to be vulnerable. Transparency with another person is not something that’s comfortable, especially at first, but the rewards of doing so and finding your thoughts, feelings, and ideas accepted are unmatched. And you might even find healing comes through the ministry of friendship which you never suspected or thought possible. If you’re interested on reading more about developing healthy, transparent friendships, I encourage you to read the book The Friendship Factor by Alan Loy McGinnis.

Tips to try:

Start with a conversation about integrity and trust. Transparency is not permission to share private information with anyone else. Transparency ends when trust breaks down.

Start small. Don’t share too much too quickly but get used to the idea of being open and honest with another person. Take time to give and receive trust.

Talk about an area of your personality or life which you have not shared before. Show you trust your friend with the information and ask them to communicate that your information is safe with them.

Make certain the Lord has a place in the conversation. Praying with one another and supporting each other through Scripture is essential.

Don’t give advice, try to fix, or offer correction. Simply accept the information being shared with you as extremely valuable – a precious gift.

Enjoy the closeness and healing which will come through honest, open conversation.

We look forward to a special me of worship when our 2013‐2014 Confirma on class will profess their faith in Jesus Christ and officially become members of God’s church. It is also an opportunity for us,

as the congrega on, to vow to support our help to them as they con nue to grow in the knowledge and in their faith journey.

SUPPORTING  MOMS OF  PRESCHOOLERS THRU SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

What is the Missional Church Ini a ve?  The Dakotas Conference of the Methodist church extended an invita on to a select number of churches to par cipate in an Ini a ve which provided consultants to come and evaluate ministry within those churches and prepare five sugges ons {prescrip ons] they felt would help the church begin a new life cycle of ministry. First UMC was chosen to par cipate and following the consulta‐

on, the congrega on voted and overwhelmingly approved to accept the five prescrip ons and commi ed to implemen ng them over the next 3‐5 years. The Conference has commi ed to helping by providing support and “prescrip on coaches”, experts in their field, to help with each.

The five prescrip ons are: 1. To develop an efficient and nimble leadership structure; 2. To have a signature Family/Children and Youth Ministry; 3. To connect outreach & discipleship through a Door to Core ministry; 4. To evaluate facili es for Huron First’s Future; 5. To implement a technology tac cs team to reach Huron and beyond.

Where are we in the process? New Leadership Council Selected. As part of the MCI prescrip ons, the church is in the process of restructuring how it does business, beginning with selec ng our new Leadership Council. The present leadership structure will con nue to serve as the new Leadership Council receives training during the fall. We were blessed with twenty‐one applicants for this board of thirteen people. All persons who applied are wonderful people and well‐qualified. Interviews were held, six persons were selected by the Lay Leadership (Nomina ons) Commi ee, and seven were selected by the pastor.

Signature Family/Children and Youth Ministry As part of prescrip ons #2, prescrip on coach, ReNae Street will be visi ng First UMC on Oct. 3‐5 to meet with staff and educa on teams to begin evalua ng and strategizing. She also invites all in the congrega on to join her on prayer walk around the church on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 4PM, as a vital way to li this area of the MCI up in prayer.

Addi onal work con nues in the various other prescrip on areas. This is a pro‐cess that requires much prayer and much par cipa on in many different areas of ministry, along with the support of the en re congrega on. Please prayerfully consider which area you feel God has provided you with gi s and graces to serve!

Hello from UMW! There’s fall magic in the air! And while we are in the season of pumpkins and scarecrows, there is nothing scary about belonging to UMW! It is a warm and wonderful fellowship of women who share your heart for mission and your love for Jesus Christ. The only worry about things that go “bump in the night” might be your toe against the dresser. We can trust Christ when he says, “Fear not.” UMW met Sept 18 for our first fall meeting. Gayle Kludt and Blain Leibnow from the Center for Independence presented a fascinating program about CFI and the services it provides. Fall Fun & Festivities October 2 – Do you eat food? Do you like to buy stuff? Then this event is for you! Join us Saturday evening, Oct 2, for a fun-filled evening. There will be homemade soups, fresh sandwiches, pie like grandma used to bake, a balloon popping game, and a silent auction. Come and enjoy the meal and bid on your favorite items offered on the auction. A free-will offering will be taken for the meal. See you there!

Upcoming Events: October 2 – Fun & Festivities October 3-4 – UMW Dakotas Conference – Bismarck ND October 15 – Prayer Vigil IV – International Day for Eradication of Poverty. October 16 - General UMW - Program: Barb Valer - Homelessness Join Us: Come and join the fun and fellowship. All women are welcome at any UMW or Circle meeting. If you need childcare, please let me know as soon as possible. Together we are making disciples for Jesus Christ. We’re on Facebook! www.facebook.com/United Methodist Women – Huron. Linda C. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Embers of the Flame Circle have declared October 11-12 to be Pink in the Pews Weekend. They invite you to wear pink to the services to show your support for the fight against breast cancer. Let’s have a pink church that weekend.
