Don’t you sometimes wander around town and see teenagers with terribly spotty faces and wonder why they don’t do something about it? I don’t feel comfortable in accosting them and suggesting perhaps they might benefit from a visit to the doctor. They might, after all, be quite content in being so spotty and don’t like the idea of doing anything about it. My experience in the surgery, though, is quite different. It seems most people don’t know that actually there is very effective treatment for acne and the reason most people don’t go to the doctors is because they assume it is something that nothing can be done for.
Now, acne is thought by most people to be mainly in teenagers and although that is generally the case, it does affect most ages. Acne vulgaris means common acne.
It is due to the blockage and infection of glands in the hair roots, causing inflammation, pustules and sometimes scarring. Boys tend to be more affected than girls and it is related to the hormonal chaos of teenager-hood. It is not caused by eating too much chocolate, nor by forgetting to wash every day. It can be very damaging psychologically and sometimes this seems out of proportion to the degree of spottiness.
The main treatment for mild cases of acne is to wash the face just twice a day with soap and water. Doing it a lot more than this can make the skin very dry and make it worse. For cases which are worse than mild, and there is a desire to treat it more effectively, then creams and tablets are the next step.
Firstly the creams: Benzoyl peroxide is the first choice. It can be bought over the counter and because it can cause irritation of the skin, it is best to start with a low concentration of 5%. When the skin has got used to that dose, then the higher dose of 10% can be used. It is very effective. It needs to be used over all the areas where the spots appear – not just on the spots themselves and so can be difficult to use if large areas have a tendency to spottiness. Sometimes antibiotics are combined with the benzoyl peroxide and this makes the treatment more effective.
The next usual choice is antibiotic tablets I always tell people to not expect any noticeable difference for at least 6 weeks and that the treatment course needs to be for a minimum of 6 months, but possibly up to 2 years. Stopping during this time does leave people with a period of being spot free, but after a few months they return as they were before. The most commonly used antibiotics are the tetracyclines and since they can cause blackening of developing bones they are an absolute no-no in people under the age of 12 years old. They also, for the same reason, must not be used if a woman thinks she may be pregnant. (In the 1950s and 1960s they were used when women were pregnant and the babies who were born during that period sometimes grew up to have black teeth!) Erythromycin is an alternative antibiotic if the tetracyclines don’t seem as effective as you would hope for.
The third way of treating acne vulgaris in women is the oral contraceptive pill. Obviously this is for the women only, not the boys. Not all oral contraceptives are the same, but Dianette and any of the others which don’t have the hormone norethisterone in, are the most effective. Norethisterone has some testosterone-like effects.
Finally, hospital dermatologists have another trick up their sleeve which is isotretinoin. It is only prescribable by hospital consultants because it is highly toxic. It reduces the sebum production and can cause depression, very dry skin and lips, and sometimes hair thinning. It also causes abnormalities in unborn babies. Its big advantage, though, is that it is very very effective and a single course usually produces a permanent cure. Occasionally some people have a second course but not commonly.
Most people do not need hospital treatment for acne. The majority of teenagers (about 85%) will have it at some stage but most have grown out of it by the age of 20 years old. During that time it can be very difficult for them. But – treatment is always very effective. Perhaps next time you see a spotty youth, it might be worth telling them to see their doctor.

What is Coaching? Coaching is a confidential, structured conversation which enables you to think clearly about what you want to do and how the best way of doing it is.
How does it work? You can be coached over the phone, face to face or by email – the choice is totally yours. The sessions are normally up to an hour and depending on your requirements, most of my clients have between 4 and 6 sessions in order to plan a way ahead. You may also have sessions weekly, or fortnightly or monthly, depending on your goals and how you would like to work.
How will I know if it is for me? I offer a one hour session totally free of charge, so that we can see if we can work together as well as to see if it is for you. So, why not contact me to book in a session to see how it will work for you?

Top 5 bbq tips...Have Fun, Stay Cool and Safe This SummerWith nicer spring and summer weather comes the chance to get together with family and friends for a garden party and barbecue. There are a lot of factors that make for great barbecues and memorable times outdoors. Here are 5 tips for hosting a barbecue this season.
1. Safety FirstSome basic rules first. Wash
those hands before cooking
and eating! Use separate
chopping boards for raw and
cooked foods, keeping these
foods apart. Keep hot foods
hot and cold foods cold. Buy
a meat probe to test to ensure
the meat, especially poultry, is
cooked properly. Always light a
traditional barbecue at least half
an hour before cooking to allow
for the flames to die down. Avoid
flare-ups by wiping off any excess
marinades before placing it on
the fire, and avoid overly fatty
meats. Kettle barbecues are
great for giving a smoky flavour
by cooking with the lid on. Keep
a water spray handy to doist the
inevitable breakout of flames.
2. Make a Kickin’ SauceLet’s face it, a great barbecue
is all about the sauce! Serious
barbecue connoisseurs make
their own sauces from scratch.
Gather some recipe books and
do some experimentation in the
kitchen. Chose 3 or 4 versions
of sauce that you think are
good,
and then enjoy testing them when
grilling. Dig in and taste - test your
concoctions. If none of your sauces
make the grade, use your favourite
store-bought sauce. Add a little of
this or a dash of that and make it
your own.
3. Keep your Grill CleanA few days ahead of time, make sure you clean your grill. This should include the actual cooking surface all the other parts as well. Cooking on a dirty grill will add unwanted flavours to your foods.
4. Plan Fun ActivitiesA volleyball court is awesome. An arsenal of soaker squirt guns or water balloons will keep young and old entertained. Most of your guests will be happy to sip a cold drink in the shade, others will want some fun
things to do. Grandma’s and uncles alike may even like a pack of cards! Cover your bases and everyone will have a great time! A game of Jenga anyone?
5. Have Lots of DrinksStaying hydrated is a safety measure that will ensure everyone enjoys themselves.

It has been another hugely successful examination centre for LoveBallet Dance Company and some its dancers who recently took their Ballet Examinations in May. Around 70 children were entered for the examinations which ran all day on Sunday 8th May at the Grange Hall in Southam. With 100% pass rate and some excellent results including the highest grade Distinctions and lovely comments from the examiners about the talented dancers, they should be very proud of themselves - the Principal of LoveBallet Dance Company Miss Lorraine certainly is.Girls and Boys aged from 3 -12 years worked very hard in the preparation leading up to the examinations as in the exam, they have to go in small groups and perform all their exercises in front of the examiner so they
must know them very well and have good technique. Its obviously a nerve racking, but exciting time too for both children and parents, but all the children enjoy the experience and it has so many benefits for them in terms of building their confidence, self esteem and having achieved results at a young age is something they can be very proud of.Following the examination they move up a grade and begin to learn the new challenges that grade has to offer which they really enjoy. Many are now in Grade 1 Ballet, with that comes the excitement of pink ballet ribbons that have to be sewn onto the shoe and they learn howto tie they properly and feel like a ‘real ballerina’.The next exam centre will include not only Ballet, but Tap, Street Dance and Modern/Jazz exams as children are progressing
through their grades well.LoveBallet Dance Company has an excellent reputation for its teaching quality and exceptional results in examinations. With over 12 years teaching experience and a well established dance school in the area we look forward to welcoming any new students that may wish to pursue dance lessons with a whole range of genres on offer from Ballet, Tap, Gymnastics, Cheer leading, Street Dance, Acting Performance and Singing, Jazz/Modern, Boogie and Bounce (18 months+),Zumba and Adult Dance Classes too. We also work towards Shows which offer a different dimension to examinations and provide the opportunity for youngsters to show off their talents in front of family and friends and take part in something on a large scale.

Whether you own your own home or live in a rented property most of us have or most certainly should have some form of household insurance to protect our contents and valuables in the event of a flood, fire or theft etc. There are however a number of differences and options available between insurers and there are ways of obtaining a valuable discount to save money. It is also worth noting that you do not usually have to insure your house and contents with your mortgage lender so obtaining
a comparative quotation can often save you money. Options on policies include Accidental Damage Cover and Personal Possessions Cover away from the home. This last option is very important especially for valuables such as jewellery and cameras etc because this is the option needed to claim if items are lost or stolen when away from your home including holidays. Bicycles are not always automatically covered so if you have them please ask if they are included and there are limits on the amount of cash covered in the home also. One of the hardest questions is how much cover to have, thankfully some policies now include an automatic amount of cover depending on the
number of bedrooms which should be adequate for most households e.g: 2 bed £30,000, 3 bed £40,000 etc. However, if you have valuable contents such as Antiques, Electrical Goods and or Jewellery a more bespoke policy or higher spec policy should be considered. Discounts off your premium may be obtained if you have smoke detectors, burglar alarms and more importantly high quality locks on doors and windows. A local broker is ideally placed to search the market for the most comprehensive and competitively priced policy for your individual needs and together with local knowledge of the post codes most affected by flooding, Reynolds Insurance are able to assist especially in the event of a claim when otherwise dealing over the phone and internet can be a nightmare.

Treat your garden...July is a time when you can sit back for a moment and enjoy the fruits of your labour in the garden. But while you are tending to your BBQ and offering your guests a cold drink, think of your garden and ensure it isn’t parched too!
Watering the gardenThe amount of water that your garden will need is going to depend on the weather conditions. The primary rule of summer watering is to water thoroughly and deeply each time and to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Deep watering will allow the plant’s roots to grow deeper, where they are less likely to dry out, as well as the added benefit of anchoring the plant into the ground better. Light, surface watering actually wastes water, because the water never reaches the root zone of the plant, and the moisture rapidly evaporates from the top inch of soil.
Try to do your watering during the morning hours so that the leaves can dry off a bit before the hot sun hits them. Also evaporation is less likely, ensuring the water is able to reach the roots before drying out.
Annuals, Perennials and BulbsContinue to dead head (remove dead flowers) your annuals to encourage continued blooming. If your annuals have died off, pull them out and add them to the compost pile. Replant that spot with hardy annuals or perennials, such as Pansies, Calendulas, or Armeria. Get
a second bloom from faded annuals by cutting them back by one half their height, then fertilize them with a liquid 5-10-10 fertilizer.Roses will need to be fertilized each month through the summer. In colder areas, allow shrub roses to ripen by discontinuing feeding them at the end of the month.Fertilize container gardens regularly with a liquid all purpose plant food.Chrysanthemums should be lightly fertilized every two weeks. Discontinue pinching your mums in mid month so they will be able to develop flower buds for the Autumn. To promote ‘trophy size’ flowers, allow only one or two main shoots to develop. Remove all side buds as they begin to develop.Bearded Iris may be divided and replanted when they have finished blooming. Discard all shriveled and diseased parts. Sweet peas may tend to fizzle out with the hot summer weather, but with heavy mulching to keep the roots cool and moist you can prolong the flowering season by a few more weeks.
A little mid-day shade will also help to maintain the quality of the flowers and prolong the blooming season.
Shrubs and TreesSummer blooming shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches.Rhododendrons and Azaleas as well as Camellias immediately after they have finished flowering with a ‘Rhododendron’ or ‘Evergreen’ type fertilizer. Dead head the developing seed pods from your Rhododendrons and Azaleas to improve next years bloom.

That is the challenge facing the Alumet Group - possibly the largest employer in Southam. Through their EOS Energy brand, the award winning company is now offering free solar PV panels to anyone in the local area. So if you own a domestic or commercial property you could soon be saving up to 50% on your annual electricity bill by simply contacting EOS and arranging your free no-obligation feasibility study - there really isn't a catch.
Deputy-Mayor, Councillor Dave Wise (owner of The Coffee Cup Cafe, Southam) recently used EOS Energy to install solar panels on his house, Mr Wise said "From an ecological point of view, my new system should save the same amount of C02 per annum that a tumble dryer would produce if used once a day, every day for 2.5 years!" The Councillor's house has been fitted with a highly efficient 2.59kWp system, capable of slashing over £200 of his annual electricity bill. Mr. Wise has been been a local resident for 15 years, he is a keen advocate of renewable technology and is more than happy with the quality and professionalism of the EOS team. He was so pleased with his installation that he confirmed "If anyone is interested in having solar panels installed, please call in the Coffee Cup and I will happily show them the array on my house"
For further information on free solar PV panels, please visit the Alumet / EOS open day which is taking place at Bourne End, Southam on the 15th July from 10.00am to 2.00pm (see enclosed flyer).
This year Alumet have received several awards including the CBI People Award, The Green Apple Award, The Midlands Excellence Sustainability Award, the Coventry Telegraph People & Training Award and the 'Treble' at The Construction News Specialist Awards. Alumet were alswo named ‘Company of The Year’ by the CCS (Confederation of Construction Specialists)
