WRITING WORKSHOPS OFFERED IN
WARRENSBURGMary Sanders Shartle will teach a four-session memoir/fiction writing course at Willows
Bistro in Warrensburg, noon to 2 p.m. Tuesdays from March 10 March 31. This

limited to ten, with a minimum of five registrants necessary. This event was funded in
part by Poets & Writers, Inc., with public funds from the New York State Council on the
Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
Mary Sanders Shartle is a poet, fiction, and essay writer. In April 2014 she release her
novel about a woman living alone in the Adirondacks, The Truth and Legend of Lily
Martindale, SUNY Press. She was awarded a 2007 individual artists grant from the New
York State Council of the Arts, a state agency, to complete the book. In January, 2014 she
was a finalist in the Tupelo Press Open Prose competition. The story, The Spider Web
appeared in their on-line Quarterly. She is a member of The Three Poets with colleagues
Marilyn McCabe and Elaine Handley, who thrice won the Adirondack Center for Writing
Literary Award for best book of poetry for their chapbooks Notes from the Firetower
Three Poets on the Adirondacks (2005) and Glacial Erratica: Three Poets on the
Adirondacks, Part 2 (2006); and Winterberry, Pine: Three Poets on North Country Winter
(2010). Their full length book, Tear of the Clouds, was released by Ra Press in 2011.
Shartle teaches numerous writing workshops for adults, children and teens. She regularly
hosts book discussion groups for Road Scholars (Elder Hostel) at Great Camp Sagamore.
She was an editorial committee member and contributor to The Galway Story Quilt: Poems
of a Place by the People Who Live Here, published in 2007 which won the Joseph Shubert
Award for Library Excellence, New York States most prestigious library award.
Shartle was the director of the Saratoga Poetry Zone in Saratoga Springs, New York from
2004 until 2007, hosting poets such as Brigit Pegeen Kelly, Dan Hoffman and RachelHadas. She currently sits on the board of the Adirondack Center for Writing.

EVER WONDER...Why do super-markets make the sick walk all the wayto the back of the store to get their pre-scriptions while healthy people can buycigarettes at the front? Why do people
order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?
Why do banks leave vault doors open and then
chain the pens to the counters?
Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dol-

Why does the sun lightens our hair, but darkens
our skin?
Why dont you ever see the headline Psychic

Why is abbreviated such a long word?
Why is it that doctors and attorneys call what
they do practice?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor-

Why is the man who invests all your money called

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic

Why isnt there mouse-flavored cat food?

Jade came to us after her previous guardian passed
away. She is a bit of a diva and would prefer not to have
to share the spotlight with anyone else. She has always
been an indoor cat and at 9 years old should not be
allowed outside. She can have her loving moments, and
her playful moments, but overall Jade is a fairly inde-
pendent cat. All she really needs to be happy is a comfortable bed tocurl up on and peace and quiet. If you think your home is jus t the place
for Jade to retire to please come by and pay her a visit!
Lorettacame to SCAC because her previous guard-
ian could no longer care for her. She is a very ener-
getic, playful cat that gets along with people, dogs,
and some cats. Loretta is looking for a forever home

Blinkys Random Thoughts
THESE ARE ACTUAL COM-PLAINTS RECEIVED BY THO-MAS COOK VACATIONS FROMDISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS:1. I think it should be explained in the
brochure that the local convenience store does not sell properbiscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.2. Its lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallarta to closein the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during siestatime this should be banned.3. On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find thatalmost every restaurant served curry. I dont like spicy food.4. We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told uswe had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed itwould be included in the price.5. The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everythingwhen we returned to our room.6. We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure.Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yel-low.7. They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. Itwas very distracting for my husband who just wanted to re-lax.8. No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The chil-dren were scared.9. Although the brochure said that there was a fully equippedkitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.10. We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem wi th thetaxi drivers as they were all Spanish.
11. The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not readthe local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Becauseof this, we were unaware of many things that would havemade our holiday more fun.12. It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to En-gland. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.13. I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to ourfriends three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller.14. The brochure stated: No hairdressers at the resort. Weretrainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us waitlonger for service.15. When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanishpeople there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food wasSpanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreign-ers.16. We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there wasno air-conditioning.17. It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy orunruly guests before we travel.18. I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention
mosquitoes.19. My fiancee and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. Wenow hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed forthe fact that I became pregnant. This would not have hap-pened if you had put us in the room that we booked.
