Say Thank You To A

 Dairy Farmer!

The National Dairy Council Urges Us All To SupportOur Nation’s Dairy Farmers. According to the Council,“Milk is an effective exercise recovery drink due to its

powerful nutrient package that supplies the nutrition thebody needs after a workout. Milk has carbohydrates tohelp refuel the body; protein to help reduce musclebreakdown and stimulate growth; and fluid and electrolytesto aid in rehydration. Drinking milk after resistance traininghas been shown to increase the body’s ability to makenew muscle and may help improve body composition. Inaddition, recent studies have shown that drinking milk afteran endurance workout may help reduce muscle damageand improve muscle recovery, which in turn may help thebody perform better during its next workout.”

BATTENKILL CREAMERY, located on Route 30 in Salem,New York is owned and operated by Donald and Seth McEachron,

4th and 5th generation farmers,

respectively, and their wives, Tracy andYvonne, respectively. We spoke with Seth McEachron abouthow the creamery came into existance. He said, “Well, I worked on our farm sinceI was able to, but my Dad wanted me tobe sure that farming is what I chose to dofor a living. So, he packed me off to collegeand strongly urged me to work ‘in theoutside world’ to see if I liked it better. So, I went to college where I studiedbusiness and economics and thereafter

worked for a financing company now know as Farm Credit East. One day I told him I would like to return to farming. He said,‘Okay, but this is not the best time. Milk prices are on the floor.’Well, we brainstormed a bit on what to do to make the farmprofitable. My Dad suggested we could start our own milk processing and bottling operation. That seemed pretty dauntingto me, but we looked into it. The investment in time and moneywould be huge! And, there was no guarantee that we would succeed.

We decided to take the risk, and the risk included losing

everything. Even though success was not guaranteed, we decidedto give it a try. In February of 2008 we began processing andbottling milk. Our first week we produced and distributed 400gallons of milk. In February of 2009 we started producing oursuper premium ice cream. Today, we have 25 employees, milk 375 cows daily, produce and distribute 25,000 gallons of milk weekly, andmany pints, quarts, 1/2 gallons and 5 gallon containersof our super premium ice cream.”

The milk and ice cream the McEachrons produce comeexclusively from their own cows. (They do buy some milk fromother farmers, but that milk is used for production for someretailers who do not carry the Battenkill Creamery label.) Theyraise all their own hay, grass and corn silage on 1000 acres+/-, andpurchase necessary supplemental grains mostly from Whitman’sFeed Store in North Bennington, Vermont. As a result, their cowsaverage 75 lbs per day and their milk contains 4-4.2% butter fat.

Make no mistake, Battenkill’s achievements have not been awalk in the park. These folks are hard working and dedicated.Long hours and times of near exhaustion are required. But, theyhave done it, and continue to do it week after week, with consistantquality results.

In the processing of the milk produced by their Holsteins,Battenkill does some things differently that result in a superiorproduct. Most importantly, however, is their ability to get theirproducts on retail store shelves or to the comsumer directly within24-48 hours after the cows are milked! Fresh to you! That comparesto up to two weeks for other and larger producers.

As a result, the creamery recently won the award for theHIGHEST QUALITY MILK IN NEW YORK STATE. Theywere presented the title at the State Fair in Syracuse, NY. The titlewas awarded by Cornell University’s Department of Food Science.

To receive this award they competed against twenty-three milk producers, from Saratoga Springs to Buffalo, NY. Battenkill ValleyCreamery is the first Farmer/Producer/Bottler to ever receive thisprestigious award!

Seth says, “We are overjoyed and extremely honored to havewon this award. We want to thank all of our local and loyalcustomers for supporting our business and buying Truly Localand “the #1 Milk in NYS!” We will continue to strive towardsproviding you the highest quality in Milk and Ice Cream for yearsto come.”

I went to THE APPLE DINER on Route 4 inHampton, New York (just across the line from the WhitehallTown Line)  I ordered chicken & biscuits. The chicken wastender, the biscuits were “melt in your mouth” good. The bestpart of the meal, however, was the butternut squash. I havenever had better! Because the meal was so good, I decided totry the raspberry pie. The crust was okay and the raspberryfilling was just the right tartness. (To my way of thinking, anyway.) The price was very reasonable.
