PRESS!RELEASE
The French Embassy in South Africa, the French School, the Lycée Français Jules Verne
of Johannesburg and its satellite school in Pretoria, the Miriam Makeba school,
will be hosting for the first time, from the 21st till the 27th June
the French Schools World Cup.
Presentation
The 2010 International French Schools World Cup, FSWC, is a landmark event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the
Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE). It will take place from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th June 2010 in Johannesburg,
South Africa during the FIFA World Cup.
An exceptional opening ceremony will be held on 21st June in the heart of Soweto where the participating teams will take
part in a parade lead by SA Guru giant puppets.
Organisation
26 French schools will represent their host country. The French school Lycée Jules Verne will represent France and the
Winnie Ngwekazi school of Soweto will represent South Africa. 260 participants from 4 continents (Africa, Americas, Asia
and Europe) will test their mettle in this event.
The teams will consist of seven players plus three substitutes, in a compulsory mix of girls and boys, from cm2 to 6ème,
(children born in 1998 and 1999).
20 years of French teaching internationally - let’s celebrate!
As part of its 20th birthday celebrations, the AEFE offered to sponsor the World Cup of international French schools.
Through its multicultural, sporting and educational component, the FSWC provides a platform to promote French teaching
beyond the customary spheres.
Organised under the gracious patronage of the Ambassador of France in South Africa, this event was selected as one of two
of the AEFE’s flagship projects of 2010. The General Management of Globalisation (French and Linguistic Diversity sub-
division) and the Cooperation and Cultural Action Division of the French Embassy in South Africa have also partnered with
this project.

A French school of distinction!
History
Founded in1969, the French school Lycée Français Jules Verne forms part of the international French schools network
administered by the Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE). It receives substantial subsidies from this organisation that
is managed under the aegis of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In return, the school is required to thoroughly comply
with the instructions of the French National Education Ministry, which involve appointing expatriate or resident teachers of the
French national education system, but also locally-recruited staff, the majority of which are French. The school is
nevertheless managed privately as the school’s management committee oversees its financial management.
Active local involvement
Close to 800 pupils from 43 different nationalities (45% of our pupils are French) are schooled in Johannesburg and
Pretoria. Over and above its mission to be a school that provides a public service, it is also an important vessel to promote
the French language and culture in South Africa.
In 2009 the school boasted a 100% pass rate for the school-leaving examination, the Baccalauréat, as well as the Brevet
(equivalent to GCSEs). These results demonstrate its pupils’ determination and quality of the teaching. The French school
has been a Baccalauréat examination centre since June ‘98 and as such, tests pupils from various Southern Africa’s main
cities.
The Lycée Français Jules Verne of Johannesburg has longstanding and significant partnership agreements with South
African institutions – the Nelson Mandela's Children's Fund, the Thulani and Winnie Ngwekazi schools in Soweto and the
Soweto Rugby Club. As such, it is a major player in educational cooperation between the two countries and strives to
promote the French educational system abroad. The school aims to provide an opportunity for talented young South
Africans from disadvantaged backgrounds to rise through sport and educational arenas.
Beyond partnerships, the school has become an important player in South African society within the educational, social and
cultural fields : in June 2007, the school exhibited the Webb Ellis Cup during its Southern African tour ; in November 2007, it
also welcomed the Springboks, current Rugby World Champions ; and in July 2008, former President Nelson Mandela
celebrated his 90th birthday at our school.
Lastly, in April 2010, the Lycée Jules Verne will host the second international under-20 rugby tournament of two hemispheres
(T2H). Three French rugby teams (representing Languedoc, PACA and Rhône Alpes regions) will compete against three
South African teams (The Lions of Johannesburg, the Blue Bulls of Pretoria, and the Soweto Rugby Club). The first edition of
this event, held in 2009, was a roaring success both in terms of partnerships and the school’s dynamism.

An international educational event
Multiple objectives
The International French Schools Football World Cup 2010 aims at promoting and strengthening ties:
1 - between French schools of the network by offering its pupils the opportunity to experience and share a unique
event around the FIFA World Cup in South Africa ;
2 - between the Lycée Jules Verne and South Africa through the organisation of international exchanges in French ;
3 - between, the universal values of sport and learning to live collectively by exposing participants to cultural and
social diversity based on a common passion for the game.
The unique partnership between the French school Lycée Jules Verne and the Winnie Ngwekazi is an ideal opportunity to
bridge cultural and social differences.
Lastly, the purpose of this tournament is to improve and reinforce the knowledge and respect of others.
Projects by participating schools
The pupils’ stay in Johannesburg - from 21st to 27th June 2010 - will conclude the last stage of an educational, cultural and
sporting event prepared several months beforehand by each of the participating schools. To achieve these various goals,
each team will take part in 10 educational projects which include:
A French Schools World Cup village representing each participating schools, French and South Africans.
An International Youth Parliament. All pupils will participate in a full-day debate on topics related to life at
their school and host country (health, environment, society, etc.);
A rally entitled “Citizen of the World” in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Soweto. Themes explored range from
Apartheid to the birth of the Rainbow Nation including a tour of key cultural and historic places.
Lastly, a meeting with a national football team of the FIFA World Cup, attending a FIFA World Cup
match, and the sponsorship of an internationally-renowned player.

An unprecedented event
The official draw of matches
The Ambassador of France in South Africa will conduct the draw of matches on Thursday 4th February at a specially-
organised event at the French school. Our school community, the French Schools World Cup organisers, the Soweto and
Johannesburg teams, our corporate partners as well as the press will attend the draw which will mark the official launch of
this event.
An opening ceremony in the heart of Soweto
The FSWC will officially be opened on 21st June in this legendary South African city. The symbolic and historic associations
of this township will set the momentous tone of this day of festivities. Several hundred children will take part in a parade in
the streets of Pimville, Soweto which will form the pedestrian link between the Winnie Ngwekazi school and stadium where
the first matches of the competition will take place.
The official SA GURU giant puppets, in partnership with the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), will lead the parade,
followed by more than 400 children including each participating team dressed in the colours of the country they represent. A
large number of political, administrative and economic players will also take part in this momentous event.
The strong symbolism associated with this township is particularly important to the lycée français in its belief to create
bridges between children from different cultures, backgrounds and social spheres, through a shared passion : football. The
spirit of tolerance and respect for others will also set the tone for the competition.
The week’s key events
Matches will take place over five days: 21st June, the first day of matches at the Soweto stadium, then 22, 23, 26 and 27
June. A total of 100 matches will be played.
Cultural and educational activities will be conducted on the other days. As mentioned above, the “schools village” will be
open at the lycée Français throughout the week. The “International Youth Parliament» the “Citizens of the World” rally, and a
game drive at the Pilanesberg Game Reserve will be organised. Furthermore, the various teams will attend a FIFA World Cup
match.
