Visit to the Market, The Mercado dos Lavradores is Funchal's bustling, vibrantly
coloured marketplace. Filled with tropical fruit and vegetables such as mangoes
(Manga), figs (Figo), guavas (Goiaba), custard apples (Anonas), cherries (Pitangas)
and possibly the most famous of Madeira's fruits, the small, sweet bananas.
This market is as much a feast for the eyes as the mouth as you gaze along the
brightly coloured produce on offer. On the ground floor of the market there is a fish
market, with possibly the best buys being the huge tuna fish (Atum), sea bream
(Pargo), red mullet (Salmonete) and swordfish (Espadarte).
The building that houses the marketplace is itself famous, designed by Portuguese
architect Edmundo Tavares (a student of Corbusier) and is built in an art-deco style
with some superb painted tiles (azulejos) by the entrance, as well as the old town.
11h00 Cable car until Monte (15mn) From the rack railway of old times to the most
sophisticated cable car of today, Funchal is once again connected to the
breathtaking beauty of Monte situated in the hills above the city. This is an exciting
way to show Madeira's hidden beauty without doing any harm to the environment.
Yes, now it’s possible to ‘fly’ over some of the wonderful landscapes of Madeira!
11h15 Brief visit to Monte church and surroundings
11h40 Toboggan or Carros de Cesto descend
12h00 Visit Madeira Wine Lodges through the Old Blandy Wine Lodge (OBWL) - you will
encounter the large oak, mahogany and satinwood casks and vats containing many
gallons of the finest wines; learn about the unique traditional "canteiro" system
used for their ageing and you'll have a chance to inspect the seventeenth century
wooden lagar and visit our private museum. Here, amongst other items, one can
see letters from Winston Churchill, accounting books from the last 3 centuries,
artefacts related to the history of winemaking and examples of the grape varieties
which exist on the island. All this helps to keep the fascinating history of Madeira
wine alive. (includes wine tasting).
