ALGAE

ALGAE

• 1st plants to appear on earth• Multicellular• Non Vascular

– No true root, stems, leaves, or tubes to transport materials

• No seeds• Must live in or near water• 3 types of algae separated by

pigment color

TYPES OF ALGAE

• Brown Algae• Red Algae• Green Algae

BROWN ALGAE

• Float on or near surface of salt water

• Held up by sacs called Air Bladders

• Provide home for many sea animals

• Ex.– Sargassum, kelp,

rockweed

BROWN ALGAE

• USES:– Food for humans

and livestock– Algins

• used in salad dressings to make them smooth and keep them from separating

• Thickening agent in ice cream and marshmellows

RED ALGAE

• Many different shapes– Clumps of delicate red

threads– Large rounded, flat

sheets– Hard stiff branches

• Usually grow attached to rocks

• Live deeper in the ocean than any other algae

RED ALGAE

• Red pigments transfer the small amount of light to the chlorophyll for photosynthesis

• Uses:– Food– Fertilizer– Carrageenans: in foods,

jellies, lotions– Agar- used in science

labs

GREEN ALGAE

• Live in freshwater• Some live with Fungi

(Lichen)• Some live in the

bodies of worms, sponges , or protists

• Land plants are believed to have evolved from green algae

GREEN ALGAE

• Land plants are believed to have evolved from green algae-have similar life cycles,

pigments and stored food supplies.
