TrainingHints

WheninitiallyteachingastudentwithvisualimpairmentstousetheiPad,itiscrucialtoteachthestudenttolearnthespatiallayoutoftheiPad.Onemajoradvantageofthetouchscreentabletisthespatiallayout.Thestudentwilllearnthebasiclayoutbydragginghis/herfingeraroundthescreen.Thereareshortcutcommandstojumpquicklytothefirstorlastitemonthescreen,tojumpbycontainers,etc.Ifastudentrandomlytapsaroundthescreenorifthestudentconsistentlyflicksthroughthescreen,hewillnotbeabletotakeadvantageofthespatiallayout.

Manyeducationalappshaveeitherafullscreenlayout(suchasPages)oraone-third,two-thirdslayout(suchasMail).Besuretospecificallyteachthestudenttoidentifythegenerallayoutofeveryapp.

TheToolbar(s)alsoprovidecriticalinformationabouttheapp.MostappshaveaToolbaratthetopofthescreen(directlyundertheStatusbarand/oraToolbaratthebottomofthescreen.InappssuchasSettings,theToolbarprovidesinformationaboutwhereyouareintheappandwhatscreentheBackbuttonwilltakeyoubackto.TheToolbarmayprovideyoursettingoptions,helpbutton,and/oractionsyoucandowiththeapp.Example:IntheMailapp,theleftone-thirdisthelistofreceivedemails.TheToolbarabovethislistincludesthebackbutton“mailbox”,tellsyouwhereyoucurrentlyare“allinboxes”andtheEditbutton.TheToolbarontherighttwo-thirds-abovetheopenedemail–containsPreviousMessagebutton,NextMessagebutton,MarkMessagebutton,Movebutton,Deletebutton,Replybutton,Composebutton.

Understandthespatiallayout,theToolsbars,andthegestures/commandssignificantlyimpactsthestudent’sabilitytoefficientlyandsuccessfullyusetheiPad.

1.1ConnectWi-Fi

ManyschoolsandbusinesseshaveguestWi-FiaccessallowingyoutoaccessfreeInternet.Onceyouhavejoinedanopennetwork,youriPadwillautomaticallyjointhatnetworkeachtimeyouarewithinrange.Ifnonetworksautomaticallyappear,manuallyselectanetwork.SomeWi-Finetworkswillbelocked;theselockednetworksareindicatedbythelocksymbol.Youwillneedapasswordtojoinalockednetwork.

Tochooseanetwork,gotoSettings>Wi-Fi>ChooseaNetworkandcheckthedesirednetwork.Ifnecessary,typethepasswordtojoinalockednetwork.

Note:theWi-Fislidermustbe“on”;iftheWi-Fislideris“off”,availablenetworkswillbehidden.

AppleiPads,iPadMinis,iPhones,andiPodTouchesusethesameoperatingsystemsoftwarecalled“iOS”.Asaconsequence,mostaspectsoftheuserinterfaceforallofthosedevicesareidentical.

PleasemakesurethatyouriPadisupdatedtothelatestiOSversion.ThismanualiscurrentlyusingiOS9.IfyouriPadneedstobeupdated,therewillbeasmallred“1”displayedontheSettingsicon.DoNOTupdateyoursoftwareorappsduringthistraining!Priortoupdating,besuretobackupyourdevice.

Tobackupyourdevice,gotoSettings>iCloud>Storage&Backup.

Note:TheiPad1canonlybeupdatedtoiOS5.

Tovieworupdateyoursoftware,gotoSettings>General>SoftwareUpdate.

SiriisavoiceactivatedpersonalassistantwithintheiOSdevices.Siricananswerverbalquestions,makerecommendationsandperformtasks.WithSiri,studentscanverballysendmessages,schedulemeetings,placecalls,reademails,andsearchtheInternetforanswers.SirimusthaveanInternetconnectioninordertowork.SiriisavailableontheiPad3andnewgenerations;SiriisnotavailableontheiPad1oriPad2.SiriisavailablestartingwiththeiPhone4Sandthe5thgenerationiPodTouch.

TheSpotlightSearchbecamemorerobustandintuitiveiniOS9.DragdownfromthemiddleoftheHomescreentoSearch(typewhatyouarelookingfor)ortoviewSiri’sappsuggestions.DragrightfromtheHomeScreentoshowSearchortoviewSiri’ssuggestions,whichincludecontacts,apps,nearbylocationsandnews.InSettings,youcanchoosewhichappstoincludeinSiri’sSuggestions.

YoucanviewSiriSuggestionswithiPhone5andlater,iPadPro,iPad(4thgeneration)andlater,iPadmini(secondgeneration)andlater,andiPodTouch(6thgeneration).

ToturnSiriSuggestionson/offortochoose/limitsuggestedapps,gotoSettings>General>SpotlightSearch.

1.6SideSwitch:LockRotation/Mute

ThereisasliderbuttonontheouteredgeoftheiPad.WhentheHomebuttonisontheright,thesliderbuttonisonthetopedge(offthescreen)ontheleftsideoftheiPad.Youcanchoosethefunctionofthisbutton:mute/unmuteallsoundsorlock/unlocktheiPad’srotation.

Ifthe“LockRotation”settingisselected,theiPaddoes/doesnotallowtheiPadtorotatebetweenportraitandlandscapemodes.StudentswithVIBmaynotholdtheiriPadflat,causingtheiPadtotilt.WhentheiPadistilted,thescreenimagemayflipupsidedown,changingthelocationofbuttonsandthespatiallayout.Moststudentswhoareblindpreferthatthescreenrotationtobelocked.WhenLockRotationisselectedandthebuttononthetopleftedgeoftheiPadismovedleftorright,theLockorUnlocksymbolappearsbrieflyonthescreenandVoiceOverwillsay,“OrientationLock/OrientationUnlock”.

Note:Someappsautomaticallylockthescreenorientation.

Ifthe“Mute”settingisselected,theiPadis/isnotmuted.Whenmuted,onlycertainsounds(alerts,notifications,typingclicks,soundeffects,gameaudio)aremuted;mediaplayback(music,podcasts,movies,videos)arenotmuted.ItiscriticalthatMuteisleftintheONposition,asthisallowsstudentswithvisualimpairmentstohearadditionalsoundsandalertswhenVoiceOverisOn.VoiceOverusesmanylittle“clicks”-suchaswhentypinglettersorwhendraggingyourfingeracrossemptyspaceonthescreen.WhentheiPadisMuted,thentheseimportantsoundcluesdisappear.WhenMuteisselectedandthebuttononthetopleftedgeoftheiPadismovedleftorright,thebellsymbol(Muteon/off)appearsbrieflyonthescreenandVoiceOversays,“Mute/Unmuted”.

ToselectyourSideSwitchpreference,gotoSettings>General>UseSideSwitchto:(checkLockRotationorMute).

Duringthistraining,wewillsettheSideSwitchtoLockRotation.

Note:Eachdevice(iPad,Mac,iPhone,iPod)thatsharesanAppleIDwillsharethesameiCloudaccount.

TheiPaddefaultsettingistoAutoLockafter2minutesofinactivity.TheiPadwillautomaticallyturnoffthedisplayandlockthetouchscreen.OntheiPad,theAuto-Lockoptionsare2minutes,5minutes,10minutes,15minutesornever.OntheiPhone,theAuto-Lockoptionsare1minute,2minutes,3minutes,4minutes,5minutes,ornever.Ifyouselect“never”youareatriskofdrainingyourbattery.

TochangeyourAuto-Lock,gotoSettings>General>Auto-Lockandcheckyourdesiredtimepreference.

Duringthistraining,wewillsetAuto-Lockto15minutes.

Parents(onpersonaliPads)orteachers(onschooliPads)canrestrictaccesstospecificfeaturesandapplications.WhenEnableRestrictionsisactivated,apasscodepopupappearsandthereareavarietyofrestrictionoptionsthatcanbechosen.

NOTE:Whensettingupthefour-digitpasscode,besuretouseadifferentpasscodethantheoneusedtounlocktheiPad!

Thefollowingitemscanberestricted:

• Youcanrestrictspecificappsandalongwithspecificfeatureswithinsomeapps(i.e.FaceTime,iTunesStore,installing/deletingapps).

• Youcanrestrictspecificcontenttypes(i.e.music,TVIshows,Websites).• Youcanpreventchangestoprivacysettings(i.e.locationservices,photos,Facebook).• Youcanpreventchangestospecificsettingsandaccounts(i.e.FindMyFriends,Cellular

DataUse).• YoucanrestrictfeatureswithinGameCenter(i.e.addingfriends,Multiplayergames).

Youhaveoptionswhenselectingitems(i.e.restrictingmovieratingsbyUniversal,PG,age12,15,18orallowallfilms).ThesesamerestrictionswillapplytoiTunesmovies,music,podcastsandTVshows.AppswithintheAppstoreareallgivenanageratingbasedoncontent(i.e.appscanberestrictedbyDon’tAllowApps,4+,9+,12+,17+,AllowAllApps).RestrictionsorParentalControlisanewfeatureiniOS8.

Thereareoptionstoalloworblockawebsite.YoucanalsoselectSpecificWebsitesOnly.

Torestrictoraddwebsites,gotoSettings>Restrictions>EnableRestrictions(turnON)>Websitestoseeallthewebsiteoptions.

Ifawebsiteisblocked,apopupwillappear.YoucantapAllowWebsiteandthentypeintheRestrictionpasscodeandaddthatcurrentwebsitetotheapprovedwebsitelist.

Schoolshavetheoptionofinstallingaprofiletouniversallyrestrictschool-owneddevices.

NOTE:Iftherestrictionpasswordisforgotten,afactoryrestoreisrequiredinordertoremovethepasscoderestriction.

On-ScreenKeyboardsiOS8introducesanumberofnewoptionsfortheon-screenkeyboard.IntheUS,wetypicallyusetheQWERTYkeyboard.OtheroptionsincludeAZERTYandQWERTZkeyboardlayouts.YoucanalsogotoAddNewKeyboardandselectfromavarietyofiPadkeyboards.ThestandardkeyboardusedinUSschoolsistheEnglishQWERTYkeyboard.

Toselectthedesiredkeyboardstyle,gotoGeneral>Keyboards>Keyboards>English>QWERTY.

Duringthistraining,wewillusetheQWERTYkeyboard.

Youhavetheoptionofaddingadditionalkeyboardlanguages.Whenyouaddakeyboardlanguage,youcanquicklyswitchbetweenyournormallanguagetoyoursecondchosenlanguagebyholdingtheNextKeyboard(pictureoftheworldglobewhichislocatedtotheleftofthedictationkeyontheon-screenkeyboardandlocatedonthetoprowofmostBluetoothkeyboard).Apopupwillappearwiththeoptionstoturnon/offPredictive(wordprediction),English(US)andyoursecondchosenlanguage.ThiswillenableyoutotypeinanotherlanguageandtheiPadwillnotsaythewordsaremisspelled.Thepredictionwordswillincludewordsinyourchosenlanguage.Forexample,ifyouchooseChineseandthentype,yourwordswillappearasamixtureofEnglishandChinese;somewordsthattranslatedirectlywillbetranslatedintoChinesesymbolsandVoiceOverwillsaythosewordsinChinese.OtherwordswillstayinEnglish.Ifyouchangethelanguageagain,theprintedwords/charactersdoNOTchange–theywillstaythesameaswhenyoutypedthewords.

IfyourBluetoothkeyboarddoesnothavetheLanguagekey,youcanusecmd+space(holdcommandkeythenpressthespacebar)tochangethelanguageoptions.
