General Internship Information Welcome to the 2014 Gateway to the Golden State Region Summer Internship program! Thank you for your interest in our internship program! This non-paid internship provides high school and college students with the opportunity to serve the American Red Cross, and through it, their local community. Every year, the Gateway to the Golden State Region of the Red Cross chooses several talented and motivated students with an interest in non-profit work for a variety of service areas, including market research, human resources and fundraising. The program will run for a total duration of 8 weeks, from June 16th to August 8th 2014. This document contains description of all the available internship positions across the Gateway to the Golden State Region. Each of the 4 Chapters in the region has their own distinct positions openings. The internship program is highly competitive; a thorough selection process will be conducted to determine the best candidate for each position.

Bay Area Chapter Internship Opportunities Alameda County Disaster Services Intern
The "Disaster Cycle Services Program Planning and Research" intern(s) will work closely with the Disaster Program Manager and service team leads to carry out community needs assessments, surveys and other planning and program support activities. Three project areas are the highest priorities for the current intern assignments; they are: completing a survey of Alameda County agencies involved with VOAD (Voluntary Agencies Active in Disasters), aiding the Mass Care team in researching and identifying shelter and high volume feeding resources and working with Community Partnership and Family Services teams to improve information about and linkages with client referral partners. Responsibilities: Interns will be assigned to one or more of these project areas and each intern will create an internship work plan that will guide the intern in the activities and tasks that he/she is to accomplish.
Review survey response rate
Initiate follow-up calls to increase survey response rate Review survey results and prepare report highlighting survey results
Create reference guide and transfer survey data to guide
Present survey report to executive committee researching and identifying shelter and high volume feeding resources
Assist in designing strategy for identifying high volume feeding capacity vendors in county
Develop inventory of facilities capable of high volume meal preparation
Make contact (by phone or in person) with selected vendors to explain red cross needs and solicit engagement as a disaster services vendor
Assist in the design and population of database for inventorying potential and confirmed feeding vendors
Assist in the design and tracking of a strategy for identifying potential mass care shelters that could serve targeted highly vulnerable communities
Make contact (by phone or in person) with potential mass care shelters to explain red cross needs and solicit engagement as a shelter
Enter data on mass care shelters into shelter database working with community partnership and family services teams to improve information about and linkages with client referral partners
Review existing reports and studies to analyze demographics, risks, and disaster service experience to create profiles of highly vulnerable communities
Prepare summary and graphics that present highly vulnerable community profiles
Identify social service and disaster cycle service providers in or serving vulnerable communities
Develop resource profiles of the identified service providers
Plan and participate in meetings with service providers to discuss closer collaboration and ways to improve services to disaster clients
Requirements:
Evidence of strong basic research and writing skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and basic database experience preferred
Well organized and detail oriented

Interest in public health, social services or related fields
Excellent verbal and written communication skills Some previous related work experience and/or relevant college level course work
Ability to work with a variety of people in changing situations Additional Training Requirements Once Accepted in Position: Any training or orientation to Red Cross programs such as mass care, sheltering or feeding requirements will be provided as part of intern experience. When possible, intern will be provided the opportunity to participate in Red Cross training related to projects with which the intern is working. Communications Writing Intern The Communications/Writing Intern will work with the Communications team to identify, interview for, and write news and feature stories regarding American Red Cross volunteers, programs, services, donors, etc. Responsibilities:
Attend weekly meetings with Communications Editor to discuss story ideas, topics, and receive assignments.
Work independently to research, interview, and write assigned stories. Must secure high resolution photograph(s) to accompany each story.
Collaborate with Communications team on editing content and brainstorming new stories. Complete one story per week to turn in for review and editing.
Requirements:
1+ years of journalism experience/education
Must submit 1 feature story and 1 news story created for journalism course or published in student or professional newspaper, magazine, or website.
Knowledge of AP Style
Must be able to work independently and meet weekly deadlines
Depending on experience , intern may be able to work from home
If working remotely/virtually, intern must remain in daily contact with supervisor. Additional Training Required for Position:

Community Events and Preparedness Intern The Community Events and Preparedness Intern will assist the Community Preparedness department in sustaining its youth preparedness programming, specifically the Pillowcase Project, over the summer. They will also participate in community events coordination.

Field Marketing Intern The Field Marketing Intern will work directly with the West Hub Field Marketing team and will interface directly with the chapters in the Pacific and Southwest & Rocky Mountain Divisions. Responsibilities:
Support development of localized marketing collateral and advertising for promoting Red Cross events, programs and campaigns. Activities may include meeting with internal contacts to gather initial design needs and content, updating materials based on existing templates and/or working with production agency on making more complex edits, and project managing the review process.
Assist with the annual marketing planning process, specifically in consolidating information from local offices and supporting the development of planning documents.
Support marketing team in identifying and building necessary materials for local offices to use to promote Red Cross activities during major disasters.
Provide support for the marketing team with project management, including updating collateral inventory, updating project timelines and tracking project statuses via Aprimo.
Additional support may be needed to publish website content across a chapter network of web pages. Content may include news & events, static text, image uploads, HTML and search engine optimization (SEO).

Individual Donor Services and Partnerships Intern The Individual Donor Services and Partnerships Intern will assist the Manager of Individual Donor Services and Stewardship in building and expanding on current fundraising programs. Responsibilities:
Researching new fundraising programs to be implanted into FY15 fundraising plan Creating mailing lists
Mailing Vehicle Donation Program postcard to potential donors Requirements:

Latino Community Preparedness Intern The Latino Community Preparedness Intern will help the Latino Community Preparedness program deliver/promote its services and resources to the community through various means. Responsibilities:
Teach Be Red Cross Ready Courses in Spanish Engage the Latino community at high-level visibility community events and important partner
health fairs.
Engage the Latino community through integrated media/email/social media campaigns. Assist in recruiting volunteers.
Help organize meetings, community events, and trainings.
Teach Organizational Resilience course in Spanish Latino-owned businesses. Requirements:
Bilingual in Spanish and College student preferred.
Must be responsible Flexible hours

Preparedness, Health and Safety Intern The Preparedness, Health and Safety Intern will provide logistic Support for Preparedness, Health & Safety. The intern may train to become a Health & Safety Instructor. Responsibilities:
Filing, sorting, inventory, stocking, cleaning, and maintaining equipment Requirements:
Computer skills preferred, but not required Solano County Disaster Services Intern The Solano County Disaster Services Intern will be helping with a variety of Disaster Cycle Services summer projects, in particular helping with a new Preparedness outreach project and Disaster activities. The intern will also support the planning needed for our upcoming Heroes Breakfast event. Responsibilities:
Researching and contacting apartment buildings to promote Preparedness programs and if possible become an instructor as well to teach preparedness to the public
Take all needed Disaster courses to be able to participate in large Disaster calls if needed or help with administrative support in the office for Client Casework or other Disaster activities
Help with in-kind donations and sponsorship requests, and other duties as needed, for Heroes Breakfast
Requirements:
Must be comfortable making phone calls/emails/in-person visits with outside agencies or businesses
Creative, a good listener, a quick learner and able to work both independently and within small groups
Isn't afraid to learn new things and must be flexible when getting day-to-day assignments that may change quickly at times

Volunteer/Youth Services Intern The Volunteer/Youth Services Intern will assist in increasing the effectiveness and capacity of the Volunteer and Youth Services (VYS) Department. To achieve this, they will help to recruit, train, and

coordinate adult and youth volunteers to support all lines of service. The intern will serve as a link between Red Cross departments and integrate outreach efforts and service delivery to the general volunteer audience. They will also handle outreach to volunteer organizations and identified partners for the purposes of formalizing strategic partnerships that motivate volunteer engagement, education, and action. Responsibilities:
Update and prepare volunteer needs assessment for distribution
Conduct data audit activities in Volunteer Connection
Ensure that counties have scanned all volunteer documents and have gone paperless
Plan and coordinate all event logistics for the annual orientation presenter refresher training
Lead phone bank project to reach out to all year one volunteers and inquire about their experience followed by building and evaluative tool
Plan and conduct one new volunteer focus group and one user testing group and compile reporting regarding the findings.

Junior or senior high school student or an enrolled college student with an interest in non-profit management, marketing/communications, graphic design, information technology, social services, human resources, diversity or other related fields.

Monterey Bay Chapter Internship Opportunities External Relations/Mass Care Intern The External Relations/Mass Care Intern will update current and expired vendor agreements, update shelter agreements, conduct shelter facility surveys and meet with community partners. Responsibilities:

External Relations Community Partnerships Preparedness Intern The Preparedness Intern will Support the Community Preparedness department through community outreach, public speaking, and administrative tasks. Responsibilities:
Develop the Ready Rating Program by promoting the program, walking clients through the system, and doing appropriate follow up.
Conducting Be Red Cross Ready presentations to community groups. Represent the Red Cross through one on one interaction at tabling events, informing them of
tools available to keep them prepared. Work with team to instruct children through puppet show.

Silicon Valley Chapter Internship Opportunities Communications Intern The Communications Intern will help support the Communications Department by strengthening and building rapport amongst leads within the Youth Services Department and taking on a new special project. Responsibilities:
Start new research project on historical figures who have a link with the Red Cross
Find pictures, write articles to get posted online, possibly in the Chapter Newsletters Support Youth Services communication leads
Support Communications department with regional events where needed Requirements:

Community Preparedness Education Intern The Community Preparedness intern will help educate the community to be better prepared for disasters. The intern will also help coordinate disaster preparedness education outreach efforts to clubs, businesses, and local organizations. Responsibilities:
Reach out to local businesses and organizations to schedule, organize, and teach free disaster education presentation and events
Send emails and make phone calls to local groups
Participate in community health and resource fairs

Volunteer Engagement Intern (Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese) This opportunity contains 3 separate positions, each focusing on a different language: Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese. The Volunteer Engagement Intern will support the Volunteer Services and Community Preparedness departments to help provide support to specific cultural communities in the county. The intern will also focus on engaging volunteers with special language skills in Vietnamese, Chinese or Spanish to become fully integrated members of the Chapter. Responsibilities:
Translate Recruitment Materials into Vietnamese, Chinese or Spanish
Create an outreach plan to recruit volunteers with in Vietnamese, Chinese or Spanish language skills

Youth Education Intern The Youth Education Intern will help foster relationships between the Red Cross and nearby elementary schools. The intern will also be responsible for creating new content or altering current content used in SafeKids classes around the county. Responsibilities:

Contacting schools and other locations to arrange classes
Reviewing current course materials and making changes where appropriate
