RAGGY Charters and the Baywatch Project owner, LloydEdwards, said they are concerned by the massive increaseof rubbish and waste washing up on the beaches, causingdamage to sea life and businesses operating within theshores.
Edwards has been involved in a vigorous campaign toclean up the main fishing grounds off Seaview, Beachviewand Maitlands.“The BaywatchMarine Conservation Project was started
during1992 inorder toeducate thecommunityabout thema-rine environmentand theneed for its protectionandconser-vation, assisting in marine law enforcement and assistingmarine scientists in their research. Another objective is toassist in the removal of marine litter.“Initially the rubbish was so bad we thought we would
nevermake an impact. Once a startwasmade, however, thesituation was gradually brought under control. It is some-times impossible to bring all the rubbish home, so it waspiled up in heaps at various points along the coast.”
lem that has laid waste to our once beautiful beaches. Wejust cannot cope anymore. Theproblem is just gettingworseand people are starting to give up hope.“Wealsoknowthat supplies for the squidboats comewith
a shopping list of all items loaded. The rubbish after the tripis supposed to be checked against this list to make sure itis returned to shore for disposal. This obviously does nothappen. The owners of the boats and skippers should be tak-en to task for non-compliance.”Neville Noble from SAMSA’s Port Elizabeth branch said
thematter had been referred to their maritime Fishing andSafety specialist, Selwin Bailey, who had alreadymade con-tact with the fishing boats to arrange for a meeting aboutthe problem two weeks ago.“We are aware of the problem and we are making plans
to sort out the issues relayed by Mr Edwards. This was thefirst complaint of its kindmade to us and our Safety Special-ist is on the job.”Noble however said he could not confirm with certainty
that the rubbish collecting on the beacheswas a result of thefishing industry.Edwards said, “I know it is the chokka boats throwing
their rubbishoverboardbecauseeverydayofmy life I spendan hour walking my dogs in front of my house in Seaviewandmonitor the litter washing up. Two days after the squidindustry started fishing on the November 23, the rubbishstarted washing up in heaps on our beaches. I collect all therubbish and put it in blue squid freezer bags and pile it upand take photos. I also know plenty of skippers in the squidindustry; theyconfirmthat therubbishIpickupcomes fromtheboats.Milkcartons,plasticbottles,detergentbottles,var-ious plastic wrappings, the list is endless.”EdwardssaidwhilethestateofthebeachbetweenSeaview
and Laurie’s Bay has improved drastically, they needmorepeople involved and need to expand to Beachview andMait-lands.“The area in front of Nautilus Crescent and Chapman
Road also needs more regular attention. The idea is to uselocal residents who would like to walk their dogs on thebeach or even just walk on the beach and assist by gettinglitter to various points,” he ended. For more information on the Baywatch Project contact

Edwards, who claims that theproblem is mostly caused by thechokka boats throwing their rub-bish overboard, said the Bay-watch project have initiated acommunity beach cleaningproject to deal with the problem. They have already collected threetons of squid boat rubbish thisyear. “Members of the squid fish-ing industry claim the plasticcomes from the townships’ rub-bish.

SINCE a strategy to counter the loss of engi-neering skills was conceived in 2004, theNelson Mandela Bay Municipality man-aged to employ the majority of the studentswho received comprehensive bursariesfrom the local government institution on afull time basis.
Councillor Andile Mfunda, PortfolioCommittee Chairperson for Infrastructure,Engineering, Electricity and Energy, saidthis initiative bodes well for the municipal-ity since 30 of the 43 individuals who re-ceived bursaries from the municipality arealready part of our team.“Another three will officially report for
duty during the first two months whilst 9are at various stages of completing theirstudies. Only one student left the munici-pality after finishing the compulsory work-ing period.“We are also not just throwing these
young men and women into the deep end,as Council approved an item in 2012 for theappointment of retired engineers to mentorthe bursars and inexperienced staff.“This programme is extremely important
as we not only give students an opportunityto study without the headache of worryingwhere the money for tuition, meals, accom-modation and books will come from, theyalso get stipends while getting practical ex-perience in the work place. To top it all, they are also assured of a permanent job aft-
er successfully completing their studies.“With our intake of students this year,
our aim is to address the need for qualifiedstudents in B Eng (Civil Engineering), BSc:Mechanical and B Sc: Electrical Engineer-ing,” Mfunda said. The municipality will publish a call for
prospective engineers to apply shortly. The criteria are as follows:Bursaries for study are available in the
following engineering disciplines:BSc. Civil EngineeringB. Sc./B. Eng Mechanical EngineeringB. Sc. Electrical Engineering
Who can apply:Grade 12 learners with South African ID
numbers, who are permanent residents inSouth Africa.Must have Matric exemption, with Math-
ematics and Science, minimum B average(HG).Current students at university already
studying B. Sc./Civil, B. Sc./B. Eng. Me-chanical and B. Sc. Electrical Engineering.The bursary will cover tuition, residence
and meal fees. The successful candidate will be required
to enter into a binding contract with theCouncil after graduation for a period equalto the tenure of the bursary.Where bursars are required to undertake
experiential training, as prescribed by thecourse, with the Municipality, an allow-ance will be paid to the bursar during thisperiod.

BESIDES being parents to two little girls wholove new clothes, Port Elizabeth couple Man-dy andDeonBerning are both astute businesspeople, who decided to turn a retail gap intoa novel online solution.
A year ago, Mandy and a friend were be-moaning the limited choice of girls’ clothes atpopular retail outlets. “The stuff in the shopsis usually too ‘old’ for girls aged 10 or 11.They’re growing them up too fast. And all thekids end up looking the same. We thought:Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something abit more special?”Mandy had also noticed how much her
daughters – Jamie (10) and Ella (6) – loved“dressing”Tinkerbell andBarbieonher iPad.Subsequent discussions with husband De-
on turned into concrete ideas which – largelythrough a chain of serendipity events involv-ing likeminded family and friends – led to thelate-September launch of their novel website,PrettiYou, an online space where little girlscan design their own clothes. It’s ahigh-techversionofpaperdolls,where
teens, tweens and little shoppers (aged 2 to 14)can click onavirtual “model” and then“dressher” in the clothes they like, and in the sizes, colours and designs of their choice, addinglace, prints, appliques or other accessories asthey go along – until they have created some-thing uniquely theirs.“Little girls can make their clothes reflect
who they are,” said Mandy. “My mum usedto make my clothes when I was little. I wouldpick the colour, the different buttons to puton, and I always had a badge. It was mine
alone. This is an attempt to recreate some ofthat magic too.”PrettiYou’s designer is Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan University fashion design grad-uate Ane Snyman, who researched interna-tional summer trends before launching theopening collection – a spring/summer rangewith a girls’ garden tea party theme – whichhas led to orders from as far as Bloemfontein,Pretoria and Cape Town.Tasteful and classic, the range includes cot-
ton or viscose dresses, skirts, shorts andshirts in soft pastels or black with polka dots,as well as bags, brooches and pendants. Giftvouchers are also available.“We didn’t want a million options. It’s a
range where you can pick and mix – and itworks. We also wanted a range where youcould shop for a special occasion, or just forshorts… I hope it starts a new trend.”PrettiYou is far removed from the couple’s
normal day jobs. Mandy, who trained in in-dustrial psychology, is the founder and chiefexecutive of Equinox, a national companythat provides companies with psychologicaltesting and training sorted to the corporateworld, suchas interpersonal skills and leader-ship development. Deon owns Carite, a com-pany that installs air-conditioners and otherautomotive systems. They opened their re-spective businesses in 2000, the same yearthey got married.“I understand business but I’m also amom-

DRIVEN by one man’s passion, Centrestagehas dazzled audiences in PE and around theglobe for almost 20 years.
Gary Hemmings, who has been living in theBay since the age of two, started Centrestagein 1996 with the assistance of wife Tanya andinvestor, Bill Monks.
“After meeting Bill, we took over the run-ning of the PEClub and opened Centrestage asa 7-days-a-weekdinner- theatre there, bringingtop music and comedy shows down fromthroughout the country. Laterwemoved to theHarbour Sports Café and then started our rela-tionship with the Boardwalk. We have rein-vented Centrestage many times, from a venueto a box office, agency to a production house,”saidHemmingswho is themastermind behindthe group’s success.
Centrestage has since blossomed into a top-notch entertainment company, boasting an ar-ray of exceptionally talented artists.
“While the showswe stage publically get themost publicity and attention, the main thrustof our business is creating entertainment for
corporate functions. We travel extensivelyand regularly throughout South Africa, per-forming at high profile corporate events, where we fly the PE flag high.”
What many people may not know is that– aside from the rare exception – Hemmingsconceptualizes, creates the marketing, se-lects the casts, selects the songs and is gener-ally solely responsible for the creation ofeach and every Centrestage show. “We havebeen lucky to have had a number of showswhich have been hits over the years and ourCentrestage shows have been seen by hun-dreds of thousands of people,” said Hem-mings.
According to him 2015 holds many sur-prises for loyal Centrestage fans and first-timers.
“We will be launching Gino Fabbri’sbrand new show called ‘Wisecracks’ early inthe year, aswell as re-staging our popularNeilDiamond show as a fundraising opportunityinMarch. I am alsoworking on a Shirley Bass-ey show to show off the incredible talent ofDonna Africa.”
He said musically they would definitely bespending more time in the 90’s this year. “I
have a new unplugged acoustic concept I amworking on, and I hope to do a Crosby StillsNash and Young Show this year, as well assomething very surprising and different fea-turing Wayne Kallis.
The launch of a dance company a projectwith Duck Chowles and the opening of a CapeTown office are also in the pipeline for thisyear.

ed at a very early age.“At the age of four or five, I was transfixed
bymy parent’s record collection. It consistedof the likes of Tom Jones, Elvis, Andy Willi-ams, Herb Albert and the Tijuana Taxi, TheCarpenters, The Beatles and JohnnyMatthis– and I listened to this music constantly. Ithink this gave me the grounding to help meappreciate the music of the fifties and sixtiesfrom the outset. I was also a Springbok radiofanatic from a very early age.
“Later, after opening Centrestage in itsfirst incarnationas avenuewhich staged out-side productions, I staged such a variety ofproductions for ever-changing short runsthat I learned an enormous amount about en-tertainment. This later helped when I startedcreating customised shows.”
Hemmings and his wife Tanya have beenmarried for 14 years.
“I amextremely proudofmywife. Imet heratUPEin1986and fell in lovewithher, literal-ly at first sight. I got seriously friend-zonedinitially while she became a Chartered Ac-countant in 1990. A few years later all thatchangedandwestartedCentrestage together, along with Bill. Tanya worked tirelessly andfor little reward for years to help me chasemy dream and build an entertainment busi-ness.Nowshehasreturned toNMMUandhascompleted her second degree in PsychologyCum Laude. She is doing Honours this yearand hopes to qualify for Masters next.”
In his spare time he likes working on newcomedyandshow ideas. “I also like entertain-ing friends, drinking wine and fishing –which I don’t prioritise nearly as much as Ishould do!”) Visit www.pe-express.co.za for Gary’s fail safe steakrecipe.

Phillips debuted in Monday’s clash, withCairncross following the next day. Both wenton to play in three of the four fixtures.
Although the energetic but inexperiencedSA side lost the series, they dominated in thefourth and final test to take a 3-2 win. SA arecurrently ranked 12th in the world, while Aus-tria lie 23rd in the international standings.
Phillips and Cairncross were full of enthusi-asm following their test debut. “We had beentraining for three days before the first game, soI was quite tired and nervous but once theadrenaline kicked in and the excitement tookover, I was raring to go,” said Phillips.
The 25-year-old striker said it was an honourto represent SA. “The first test was a big stepfor me; it was about building my future andproving myself for the next test. In the lastgame I scored my first international goal, which was the highlight of the week for me.”
The third-year NMMU law student said theteam had created an encouraging environmentfor the new players.
His selection reconfirmed his determinationto pursue a professional playing career, afteraninjuryputpaid toapromising two-yearstintin the English and Spanish leagues. The EastLondon-born player then relocated to PE andenrolled at NMMU.
“I continued playing hockey for the Madibazfor the love of the game, but I was ready to callit quits on my hockey career at this point be-cause of my injury.”
His return to full fitness with the Madibaz al-lowed Phillips to hold onto his dream and heaspires to become a fixture in the national teamas they attempt to qualify for the 2016 OlympicGames.“Iwanttoearnasmanycapsaspossibleand prove myself for the Olympic team.”

IN less than two months Melbourne will be-come the epicentre for start of the 2015 For-mula 1 season. Aswith its predecessors thereis much to be excited about for the new sea-son.If you found the 2014 aesthetics unpleasing
and plain awkward youweren’t alone.Merci-fully a tweak to the aero rules for the nosesectionmeans that the hideous duckbills andanteaters have been consigned to the scrapheap.Visually the majority of the field will have
a relatively uniform look for the nose sectionof the car and it does constrict some of theeccentric individuality seen last year. Never-theless, there is little doubt that most will behappy to have far better looking cars to ogle. For the sites that Formula 1 will visit the
FIA has announced a twenty race calendarwith a highly anticipated visit toMexico Cityin late October. As predicted the KoreanGrand Prix loses its spot on the calendarwhile the German Grand Prix will again behosted at the Hockenheimring for 2015. Eventhough the deal struck with Bernie Eccle-stone back in 2006 specifies an annual rota-tion between Hockenheim and the Nurbur-gring the latter’s changeof ownershiphas leftit in financial difficulty and without a dealin place for the coming season. While safety is paramount in F1 the Safety
Car periods have, on occasion, been far too
long. It has been mainly lapped cars whichhavebeen the culprit in these long-winded in-termissions. The FIA has shown some com-mon sense by announcing that the Safety Carwill no longer wait for lapped cars to catchthe rear of the field before resuming the race.Along with a far more visually pleasing
sport there will also be three rookies on thegrid. Sauber has confirmed that Brazilian Fe-lipe Nasr will be partnering with Marcus Er-icsson for 2015. Nasr gained valuable seattime in F1 last year as the official test driverfor the Williams team and he graduates toFormula 1 with a pretty solid CV. Nasr haswon both the Formula BMWand British For-mula Three championships before finishingthird overall in last year’s GP2 campaign. It’sno secret that he comes with substantial fi-nancial backing from Banco do Brasil whichis much needed by a struggling Sauber team.Nevertheless, Nasr is a real talent and it’smore than worth it to keep an eye on hisprogress. At one stage it appeared as if Carlos Sainz
Jnr’s introduction to Formula 1 would haveto wait a few more years. The son of formerdouble rally world champion Carlos Sainzwas on course to be fast-tracked to F1 but helost out to Russian driver Daniil Kvyat. Itproved to be amomentary delay as SebastianVettel’s departure to Ferrari meant a promo-tion to the Red Bull team for Kvyat. This in
turn opens the door for Sainz Jnr to slot intothe vacant Toro Rosso seat. However, it will be his Toro Rosso team-
mate who will undoubtedly carry the biggestweight of expectation of all the rookies in thefield.MaxVerstappen is the son of the not-so-successful former F1 driver Jos Verstappen. But that isn’t what makes his debut so spec-tacular. Instead, it’s the fact that when MaxVerstappen takes to the starting grid in Aus-tralia he will be seventeen years old. He willbe the youngest driver ever to compete in thesport and probably the first, should he scorea podium, who cannot legally have a sip ofthe celebratory champagne. Verstappen’sracing biography is rather limited given hisage but he nevertheless boasts some impress-ive wins including third place in last year’sEuropean Formula Three championship. There are many who believe that if you’re
fast enough you are old enough. To a degreethis plays true but handling the pressure ofFormula 1 is a big ask for someone so young. It is clear that Red Bull’s motorsport directorHelmutMarko has no qualms about piling onthe pressure and has already compared theyoungster to the great Ayrton Senna. Asgrand and fiery as the Verstappen PR hasbeen he is a bit of an anomaly. Either MaxVerstappen is going to be the greatest thingsince Lewis Hamilton or something elsewhich time will inevitably tell.
TALKINGF1:NATALIE LE CLUE
Newrules, new looks, newfaces
THEYWERE dressed in pink, ladylike al-most, but HashimAmla’s Proteas certain-ly did not perform like the so-called weak-er sex at Joburg’s Wanderers Stadiumlast Sunday as they took the West Indiesby the throat and strangled them to winby 148 runs and lead the current ODI se-ries 2-0.What’s more they did it with both bat
and ball in spite of losing the toss and be-ing asked to bat first. The unusual pinkattire was a symbolic win too for cancerawareness, to which the South Africansno doubt were only too happy to dedicatetheir winning way.The match’s basic statistics alone
graphically tell the one-sided tale: theProteas 439 for 2 (Amla 153 not out, RileeRossouw 128, AB de Villiers 149). After aquiet start The West Indies in reply intheir allotted 50 overs could manage only291 – 148 runs behind. There was little fight-back by the West
Indies though the stylish Ramdenknocked up a solid 50, his sixth ODI half-
century, from 45 balls with 4 x fours andone six. But it became clear early on withthe dismissal of big hitter, Chris Gayle, for 19 that this was not to be their day.DR Smith also caught the eye with a run-a-ball 57. Otherwise, however, the WestIndies cupboard was somewhat bare. The match chiefly was about the domi-
nance of the Proteas’ and the outstandingbatting of Amla with a knock that con-tained 14 fours and a six, while his open-ing partner, Rossouw, scooped his firstcentury at this level. However, finally itwas De Villiers’ whirlwind century, his127 coming from just 31 balls – an ODIworld record and the fastest overall in in-ternational cricket – that those whopacked the Wanderers stands or watchedit all on TV will remember most fondly. And, of course, there couldn’t possiblyhave been any other Man of the Match. When De Villiers came to the crease
there were only 11 overs left. This was theODI captain at the top of his game. Ascommentator, Mikey Holding, no mean
wielder of the willow in his West Indiesdays, put it: “In this sort of form AB isdeadly. You got the feeling he would havefound a shot for even your very best balland sent it for four or a six. It’s a perform-ance I’ll never-ever forget.”It was praise well deserved. De Villiers’
127 came off just 44 balls. It took only 31deliveries to rack up his century. Just 13balls to reach his 50. “Going like as steam-engine, a very smooth one,” said anotherof the commentary-box team. Then added:“Leaves you gasping, doesn’t it? The fast-est century in the history of cricket!”The aplomb – sheer cheek – with which
DeVilliers executed some of his shots willlive long in the memory of cricket fans. The cheek of some of them must have leftthe purists gasping.Again it was the commentary box’s
Holding who couldn’t mask his increduli-ty. He gave a sort of cough-laugh. “Theywere just incredible, some of those shots. There’s no other way to describe them.”Now for No. 3!
