The Traineeship programme bridges
the gap from school or college to
work by providing the basic work
skills, vocational skills and work
experience a young person needsto get a job.
Traineeships give unemployed
young people the opportunity to
get on the job ladder to secure
permanent employment.
Young people aged between 16
and 23 can join the Traineeship
programme without affecting child
beneft housing beneft, or job
seekers allowance if appropriate.
The programme lasts up to six
months during which time the
trainee may be offered a job .
Trainees spend the frst three
weeks learning basic work skills
including maths and English,
team working, basic food hygiene,
health and safety, customer service
and communication skills plus
appropriate hotel and catering skills.
Up to fve months work experience
follows in a local hotel, restaurant,
pub, club or catering outlet. During
this time the trainee will work
towards a catering qualifcation as

Throughout their work experience
the trainee will be mentored by anexperienced hotel and catering
trainer from HIT to provide support
and guidance and ensure they are
learning the practical skills. At any
time during their programme the
trainee may be offered a job at their
work experience placement or an
interview with another hotel and
catering employer.
With the skills acquired and the
practical experience gained, traineeswill step up to a brighter future if you
direct any eligible young person

Why the hotel andcatering industry?
For the next ve years over a quarter
of new jobs in this country are
predicted to come from the hotel
and catering industry who are hiring
enthusiastic applicants today.
Its not just about cooking, waiting
and bar tending, there are a full
range of reception, accounts
and administration jobs, plus
housekeeping, cleaning, portering,
banqueting, sales and marketing
and cleaning.
There are a great variety of places to
work. As well as hotels, restaurants
and pubs, both airports and airlines,
ports and cruise liners, night clubs,
bistros and tourist attractions, plus
food courts, holiday camps, coffee
shops and delicatessens.
Wherever the public go they need
feeding! So there is catering at
sporting events, care homes,
hospitals, museums, theme
parks, railway trains and stations,
motorways and even prisons.
Young people frequently dont know
what job they want to do and have
aspirations for fame and stardom,
winning X factor, or a dazzling
media career.
For a school or college leaver a
starting job with qualications in
the hotel and catering industry
will always provide them with
work in between their auditions,
gigs, stardom and international
travels before they start their next
adventure. However many actors
and musicians wait tables or pull
pints in between gigs.
