    The Traineeship programme bridges

    the gap from school or college to

    work by providing the basic work

    skills, vocational skills and work

    experience a young person needsto get a job.

    Traineeships give unemployed

    young people the opportunity to

    get on the job ladder to secure

    permanent employment.

    Young people aged between 16

    and 23 can join the Traineeship

    programme without affecting child

    beneft housing beneft, or job

    seekers allowance if appropriate.

    The programme lasts up to six

    months during which time the

    trainee may be offered a job .

    Trainees spend the frst three

    weeks learning basic work skills

    including maths and English,

    team working, basic food hygiene,

    health and safety, customer service

    and communication skills plus

    appropriate hotel and catering skills.

    Up to fve months work experience

    follows in a local hotel, restaurant,

    pub, club or catering outlet. During

    this time the trainee will work

    towards a catering qualifcation as

    a chef, waiter, bar person, porter,

    housekeeper, receptionist or barista.

    Throughout their work experience

    the trainee will be mentored by anexperienced hotel and catering

    trainer from HIT to provide support

    and guidance and ensure they are

    learning the practical skills. At any

    time during their programme the

    trainee may be offered a job at their

    work experience placement or an

    interview with another hotel and

    catering employer.

    With the skills acquired and the

    practical experience gained, traineeswill step up to a brighter future if you

    direct any eligible young person

    known to you to this programme.

    Why the hotel andcatering industry?

    For the next ve years over a quarter

    of new jobs in this country are

    predicted to come from the hotel

    and catering industry who are hiring

    enthusiastic applicants today.

    Its not just about cooking, waiting

    and bar tending, there are a full

    range of reception, accounts

    and administration jobs, plus

    housekeeping, cleaning, portering,

    banqueting, sales and marketing

    and cleaning.

    There are a great variety of places to

    work. As well as hotels, restaurants

    and pubs, both airports and airlines,

    ports and cruise liners, night clubs,

    bistros and tourist attractions, plus

    food courts, holiday camps, coffee

    shops and delicatessens.

    Wherever the public go they need

    feeding! So there is catering at

    sporting events, care homes,

    hospitals, museums, theme

    parks, railway trains and stations,

    motorways and even prisons.

    Young people frequently dont know

    what job they want to do and have

    aspirations for fame and stardom,

    winning X factor, or a dazzling

    media career.

    For a school or college leaver a

    starting job with qualications in

    the hotel and catering industry

    will always provide them with

    work in between their auditions,

    gigs, stardom and international

    travels before they start their next

    adventure. However many actors

    and musicians wait tables or pull

    pints in between gigs.
