Story Ideas: New car era moves to Barber While the level of experience varies among drivers, everyone is on the same footing when it comes to the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series car. The new IZOD IndyCar Series car adds an element of competition that has not been seen since the last time a new car was introduced in 2003. The new car plan began in 2010, overseen by a hand-picked committee of mechanical experts and technical gurus who have guided the process to its fulfillment. Drivers have spent almost the entire offseason in team tests shaking down the car as they prepare for the season, and INDYCAR held its first official test on March 5-6 and 8-9. Engine manufacturer competition returns For the first time since 2005, the IZOD IndyCar Series will have different manufacturers producing the engines that power the car. Honda, Chevrolet and Lotus continue their battle for the IZOD IndyCar Series Manufacturers’ Title. Chevrolet took the opening round at St. Petersburg with Helio Castroneves, but Honda and Lotus will be looking to get back on equal footing at Barber. Teams powered by Honda engines include Target Chip Ganassi Racing, Service Central Chip Ganassi, Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi, Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, Dale Coyne Racing, Sam Schmidt Motorsports, A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Chevrolet will power Team Penske, Andretti Autosport, Panther Racing, KV Racing Technology and Ed Carpenter Racing. Lotus Dragon Racing, Lotus-HVM Racing, Lotus-DRR and Team Barracuda-BHA will have Lotus engines. Castroneves looks to continue hot start Helio Castroneves started his quest to win his first IZOD IndyCar Series title with a win in the season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner ended a winless drought of more than a year by winning at St. Pete for the third time. Can Castroneves, who won the inaugural IZOD IndyCar Series event at Barber, continue his strong start to the 2012 season at Barber Motorsports Park? Power looking to move up After finishing second in the IZOD IndyCar Series for two consecutive years, Team Penske’s Will Power is looking to move up a spot for the first time in his

career. Power, the only driver to win an IZOD IndyCar Series pole at Barber, will be looking for his second straight win in Alabama. Can Power win again? Franchitti looks to make history Dario Franchitti enters 2012 looking to become the second Indy car driver to win four consecutive championships, joining Sebastien Bourdais who won four titles from (2004-2007). Franchitti finished 13th at St. Petersburg and will be looking to make up ground at Barber, where he has finished third in each of the last two races. Hinch’s sophomore season off to strong start 2011 Sunoco Rookie of the Year James Hinchcliffe has joined Andretti Autosport for the 2012 season in the Go Daddy seat. His self-deprecating humor and outgoing personality, in addition to success during his rookie season, ingratiated him with principals at Go Daddy, which continued as a team sponsor after the departure of Danica Patrick following the 2011 season. Hinchcliffe, a 25-year-old native of Toronto, finished fourth at St. Petersburg. Can he score his first podium finish at Barber, where he made his series debut in 2011? Barrichello joins IZOD IndyCar Series Rubens Barrichello, the longest-tenured driver in Formula One history, began the latest chapter in his storied racing career at St. Petersburg with KV Racing Technology for the 2012 season. The 39-year-old Brazilian made 322 starts in an F1 career that spanned from 1993-2011 with six teams. Barrichello finished 17th in his series debut. Can he improve on those results at Barber? Seven different teams represented in top 10 at St. Petersburg The first IZOD IndyCar Series race of 2012 produced exciting racing on the temporary street course in St. Petersburg, Fla., with 10 lead changes, seven leaders and seven different teams represented among the top-10 finishers. Will there be similar results at Barber Motorsports Park? Strengthened Mazda Road to Indy on display Two-thirds of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system, designed to groom the up-and-coming stars of the IZOD IndyCar Series, will be on display at Barber with races in Star Mazda and Firestone Indy Lights on the schedule this weekend. The Mazda Road to Indy provides scholarships for the champions of USF2000, Star Mazda and Firestone Indy Lights to advance to the next level. The scholarship program strengthens the program by providing drivers the opportunities to advance based on talent, not financials. Race Notes: The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama will be the third IZOD IndyCar Series event conducted at Barber Motorsports Park. Helio Castroneves won the inaugural race in 2010, while Will Power won the race in 2011. Power claimed the pole position in both 2010 and 2011.
At least 22 drivers entered in the event have competed in IZOD IndyCar Series race at Barber. Three of those drivers led laps: (Marco Andretti 58, Helio Castroneves 20, Will Power 102). At least four drivers will compete in their first IZOD IndyCar Series race on the streets of St. Petersburg: Rubens Barrichello, Ed Carpenter, Katherine Legge and Josef Newgarden. Newgarden competed on the track in Firestone Indy Lights. Season to Date:
Helio Castroneves won the season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. It was the 26th win of his Indy car career, tying Rodger Ward for 13th on the all-time win list.
Will Power won his 25th career Indy car pole at St. Petersburg. Three drivers (Rubens Barrichello, Katherine Legge and Josef
Newgarden) started their first career IZOD IndyCar Series race at St. Petersburg.
There were seven race leaders and 10 lead changes in the season-opening race at St. Petersburg.
Milestones & Records: Should Dario Franchitti win the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series championship,

PRESEASON STORY LINES
INDYCAR RIDING IMPROVED VIEWERSHIP INTO 2012 For the second consecutive year, the IZOD IndyCar Series saw an increase in television viewership and attendance. The 2011 season averaged 402,000 viewers per race on VERSUS -- up 10 percent over the 2010 average of 365,000 viewers – while ABC saw a 28 percent increase in viewership, averaging more than 3 million viewers. Overall, the series saw a viewership gain of 28 percent, reaching more than 18.2 million homes --- an average of 1.4 million households per event. Races will again be broadcast on ABC/ESPN and the NBC Sports Network, formerly known as VERSUS. NEW ERA, NEW CAR While level of experience varies among drivers, everyone is on the same footing when it comes to the new 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series car. The new car adds an element of competition that has not been seen since the last time a new car was introduced in 2003. Honda, Chevrolet and Lotus engines will be utilized in 2012. Where competition used to mainly rely among the teams, the opposing engines will add a new level of competition to the series. Teams powered by Honda engines include Target Chip Ganassi Racing, Service Central Chip Ganassi, Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi, Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, Dale Coyne Racing, Sam Schmidt Motorsports, A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Chevrolet will power Team Penske, Andretti Autosport, Panther Racing, KV Racing Technology and Ed Carpenter Racing. Lotus Dragon Racing, Lotus-HVM Racing, Lotus-DRR and Team Barracuda-BHA will have Lotus engines. WILL DARIO WIN HIS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP? Dario Franchitti carried an 18-point advantage over Will Power following his second-place finish at Kentucky Speedway last season and wrapped up his third consecutive IZOD IndyCar Series championship and fourth in five years. He did not participate in the series in 2008. Should he win his fourth in a row in 2012, he would tie with fellow IZOD IndyCar Series driver Sebastian Bourdais for most consecutive championships. A.J. Foyt is the all-time leader with seven championships, all under USAC-sanctioning. HINCHCLIFFE TAKES OVER GO DADDY SEAT 2011 Sunoco Rookie of the Year James Hinchcliffe has joined Andretti Autosport for the 2012 season in the Go Daddy seat. His self-deprecating humor and outgoing personality, in addition to success during his rookie season in 2011, ingratiated him with principals at Go Daddy, which continued as a team sponsor after the departure of Danica Patrick following the 2011 season.
Hinchcliffe, a 25-year old native of Oakville, Ontario, was left without a ride for 2012 after his former team, Newman-Haas Racing, ceased participation in the IZOD IndyCar Series. With them, he recorded seven top-10 finishes in 16 races after missing the first event of the season. His season-high finish was in fourth at Long Beach, New Hampshire and Kentucky. POWER LOOKING TO MOVE UP After finishing runner-up to the champion for two consecutive years, Team Penske’s Will Power is looking to move up a spot for the first time in his career. Last season, he tied series season highs with six victories and eight starts from pole, falling just 18 points shy of a championship. He also grabbed his first oval victory at Texas Motor Speedway in June. In 2010, he led Franchitti into the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but crashed on lap 144 while his rival finished eighth. BARRICHELLO JOINS THE IZOD INDYCAR SERIES Rubens Barrichello, the longest-tenured driver in Formula One history, will begin a new journey with KV Racing Technology for the 2012 season. The 39-year-old Brazilian was persuaded by his long-time friend, Tony Kanaan, and several positive tests in the new car to make the move. “To be a winner in IndyCar you have to be a complete driver because you will have to compete under a whole range of conditions and in various configurations,” Barrichello said. “With all my experience I will start as a rookie, but I think I will get better as the year progresses.” Barrichello made 322 starts in an F1 career that spanned from 1993-2011 with six teams. He was runner-up in the Formula One championship in 2002 and 2004, and earned 11 victories, 68 podiums, 106 top-five finishes and 172 top-10 showings. NEW EVENT HIGHLIGHT 2012 SCHEDULE A new event and a return to two long-time favorites highlight the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule this season. The first Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will be held June 1-3, 2012—a week after the Indianapolis 500. Tony Kanaan (2007) and Justin Wilson (’08) won IZOD IndyCar Series events on the picturesque 2.1-mile street course, but the series has not returned since. INDYCAR will sanction a race in China for the first time Sunday, Aug. 19, on a 3.87-mile street circuit in Qingdao with the long-term objective of constructing a permanent racing and entertainment venue. Known for its German and French heritage, Qingdao boasts an almost European atmosphere, with the city often referred to as “China’s Switzerland.” The race weekend will coincide with the popular Qingdao International Beer Festival. Auto Club Speedway has been confirmed as the final race of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season. The series is returning after a seven-year absence, the last race taking place in 2005. The 2-mile oval will race under the lights for the first time on Sep. 15. There have been four IZOD IndyCar Series races conducted at the venue that opened in 1997 and CART races held from 1997-2002. Originally known as California Speedway, on Feb. 21, 2008, the Automobile Club of Southern California became the title sponsor of the raceway, renaming it Auto Club Speedway. Sam Hornish, Jr. won the first race in 2002 after beating Jaques Lazier across the finish line by a mere 0.0281 seconds.
MAZDA ROAD TO INDY CHAMPIONS MOVE UP All three series champions of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system have progressed to the next level of competition for the 2012 season. Petri Suvanto, winner of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda, has joined Team Pelfrey in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. The team was crowned team champion last season with drivers Connor de Phillippi and Nick Andries. 22-year-old Frenchman Tristan Vautier, winner of the 2011 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, has moved up to Firestone Indy Lights with Sam Schmidt Motorsports. The team has won four of the last six Firestone Indy Lights titles, including the 2011 championship with Josef Newgarden. Newgarden will compete the full IZOD IndyCar Series season with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. The 21-year-old from Hendersonville, Tenn., captured the Firestone Indy Lights title last season with Sam Schimdt Motorsports on five wins and ten podium finishes. With every driver essentially being a “rookie” in 2012 when it comes to driving the new car, Newgarden is confident his team will be able to be competitive with the more experienced teams. “I think I will have all the tools to the job for them, and it’s going to be collaboration,” Newgarden said. “It’s not going to come from one guy. It’s going to take everyone coming together to make it work. I think we already have that and that’s important when you come to a new group. We’ve got a great chance for success.” FACES IN NEW PLACES The IZOD IndyCar Series will see several familiar faces changing teams this season. Mike Conway, formerly with Andretti Autosport, has moved to A.J. Foyt Racing in the No. 14 ABC Supply car. Justin Wilson has moved to Dale Coyne Racing after a season-ending injury while with Dreyer & Reinbold. Sebastien Bourdais, who competed 2011 on a partial schedule with Dale Coyne Racing, moves to Lotus Dragon Racing with rookie Katherine Legge. Ed Carpenter has formed his own team and plans to compete the full season after winning his first race at Kentucky in 2011. Simon Pagenaud, who competed in three different events in 2011 with three different teams, moves to newly rebranded team Schmidt/Hamilton Motorsports. Takuma Sato moves from KV Racing Technology to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and Alex Tagliani—formerly of Sam Schmidt Motorsports—will compete with Team Barracuda-BHA. Oriol Servia, who was left without a ride with the closing of Newman-Haas Racing’s IZOD IndyCar Series team, joins Lotus Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. THE ROOKIES
Katherine Legge and Simon Pagenaud will join Josef Newgarden as rookies in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series.
Katherine Legge, who joins Lotus Dragon Racing for 2012, made a name for herself in European open-wheel racing. She began competing in North America in the Atlantic Championship and graduated to the Champ Car World Series in 2006 with PKV Racing. She competed the next year with Dale Coyne Racing, and was left without a ride for the 2008 season and returned to Europe to compete in touring cars.
Simon Pagenaud will join her as a rookie this season with Schmidt/Hamilton Motorsports after three races in 2011. He filled in for Justin Wilson at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Ana Beatriz at Barber and Simona de Silvestro at Infineon. The Frenchman won the 2006 Atlantics Championship at Walker Racing with current Sam Schmidt Motorsports team manager Rob Edwards. New IZOD IndyCar Series competitor Rubens Barrichello will be a rookie at the Indianapolis 500. THE VETERANS The IZOD IndyCar Series will have an impressive mix of racing veterans this season who will do everything possible to keep the record books from having a “Franchitti” or “Power” next to the 2012 Champion category. The duo has dominated the championship race the past two seasons, and vets like Scott Dixon, Ryan Briscoe, Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay are ready for their moment in the spotlight. Dixon, winner of the 2003 and 2008 IndyCar championships, fought off three other contenders in 2011 for the A.J. Foyt Oval Trophy with top-five finishes in all seven oval races (the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Oct.16 is not included). He finished ten points ahead of teammate Franchitti, but fell 55 points shy of the series title. He’ll be looking to claim his third championship in 2012 again teamed with Franchitti, but should expect close competition from other hungry veterans. WHO WILL BE THE NEXT FIRST-TIME WINNER? Mike Conway and Ed Carpenter got the job done in 2011, who will be next? Conway won his first race at Long Beach with Andretti Autosport, overtaking race leader Ryan Briscoe in Turn 6 of the 11-turn, 1.968-mile circuit on Lap 72 and going on to the checkered flag. Carpenter, competing with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, pulled out a breath-taking win over Dario Franchitti by a mere 0.0098 of a second -- the sixth-closest race in IZOD IndyCar Series and the closest ever at Kentucky Speedway. Aside from the three rookies, drivers without IndyCar wins include Rubens Barrichello, EJ Viso, JR Hildebrand, James Hinchcliffe, Takuma Sato, James Jakes, Simona de Silvestro and Charlie Kimball. ED CARPENTER FORMS OWN TEAM Native Hoosier Ed Carpenter has formed his own team for the 2012 season, and plans to drive the full season. Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka, which sponsored Carpenter’s car in 2010 when he raced with Panther Racing, will be the primary sponsor of Ed Carpenter Racing as part of a three-year commitment. The company served as Carpenter’s helmet sponsor in 2011 in addition to sponsoring a car from Panther Racing driven by Buddy Rice for the Indianapolis 500. Carpenter competed in 10 races in 2011 with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, getting his first win at Kentucky Speedway after a tight contest with eventual season champion Dario Franchitti. The team is owned and operated by Carpenter and his stepfather, Tony George, who started Vision Racing in 2005. VETERAN WILSON RETURNS TO COMPETITION After an incident in practice at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course left him with a fractured vertebrae, Justin Wilson will return to competition in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season with Dale Coyne Racing.
Wilson had been with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing for the past two seasons, accumulating 28 starts, 12 top-10 finishes and one pole. In his first return to racing since his accident, Wilson won the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona with Michael Shank Racing. Often considered the top free agent over the offseason, Wilson will be rejoined with his former engineer, Bill Pappas, for the 2012 season. This particular combination of driver, engineer and team owner have seen success before, when Wilson and Pappas gave the veteran team owner his first victory in 2009. INDYCAR AND DREAMWORKS ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP INDYCAR will open up its appeal to a whole new audience demographic with the announcement of “Turbo,” an animated film schedule for release on July 19, 2013. The movie comes in partnerhship with INDYCAR, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (Nasdaq: DWA). Four-time champion Dario Franchitti will serve as technical director. DreamWorks Animation's "Turbo" is the story of an ordinary garden snail with an impossible dream: to win the Indy 500. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo sets out to try to make his impossible dream come true.

2012 IZOD IndyCar Series Race Recaps Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg – Sunday, March 25 at Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Helio Castroneves ended a winless drought of more than a year by winning the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg for the third time on March 25.
Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Shell V-Power/Pennzoil Ultra Team Penske Chevrolet, passed Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon for second place with a pass on the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 73 and went on to score the 26th win of his Indy car career.
Dixon finished second in his Honda-powered car, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport in a Chevrolet-powered car. James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe rounded out the top-five.
It was an emotional day for Castronves, who dedicated his win to the late Dan Wheldon. After taking the checkered flag, Castroneves stopped his car at Turn 10 and honored Wheldon,
who calledSt. Petersburg home, by climbing the fence and patting the "Dan Wheldon Way" sign located there.
