A word about Facebook stats – and
why they’re so important to you …
• Facebook page insights give you incredible data about
how your page is performing and how effectively you’re
targeting prospects
• You can literally see how many people that you are
engaging with by country/language/location
• You should use this data to refine your Facebook business
page until it’s ‘tweaked and tuned’ to perfection
• The great thing about Facebook’s insights feature is that
they never lie and remove all ‘finger in the wind’
guesswork from your marketing
Facebook Stats
Edgerank is the Facebook equivalent of the Google
Algorithm … it basically determines what shows up on
your news feed … it’s the ‘secret sauce’!
Why is this important? Because if you understand a
little about Edgerank, you can influence what people see
in relation to your business
Like the Google Algorithm nobody knows the exact
formula, but we do know the key components which
influence it
Facebook Stats
(Image taken from Techcrunch.com)
Facebook Stats
How it works …
1) Everything that shows up in a news feed is called an object
2) When people interact with an object (a status update for instance)
Facebook calls that an Edge (a tag or comment for instance)
3) Each Edge has three key components which relate to Facebook’s
algorithm:
- An affinity score between the creator and the person commenting ie how
often you interact
- A weight is given to each Edge … so a comment may have more weight
than a like for instance
- Time is a key factor … how old is the object? The newer, the better
So what does that mean for you?
Facebook Stats
With this knowledge of Edgerank, we can define the best way to use your Facebook
newsfeed …
To get the best out of Facebook you need to:
1) Post content regularly (but not every 5 minutes!)
2) Post fresh and engaging content (test to see what works)
3) Encourage engagement with your Fans (ask questions, seek opinions)
4) Try and get comment and debate going (not just a barrage of content)
5) Use photos and videos (people love these and they are very viral)
Warning!
Don’t become a photo tagging menace! ‘Tag partner’ colleagues by prior agreement

Do Yellow Pages, newspaper and magazine adverts,
leaflets or TV & Radio adverts provide you with the
same information to allow you to track ROI?
If not, why are you still paying for them?
Facebook Ads
Although Facebook
ads are easy to use,
it’s also very easy to
spend lots of money
on them, with few
results.
I recommend further
learning!
A quick word about Facebook ads …
Facebook Ads
• You can create ads on Facebook itself or via Power Editor
• I use Power Editor much of the time
• Power Editor lets me import my email subscribers and target
them
• You must use the Chrome browser to access Power Editor:
https://www.facebook.com/ads/manage/powereditor
• Power Editor gets the newest features first
• You can create custom and lookalike audiences
• It is clunky and not very user friendly – it’s a lot nicer creating
ads in Facebook itself
• The targeting is excellent in Facebook ads
Competitions and Promos
Read the T&Cs … Facebook will
clobber you if you get it wrong, but
they don’t give much help to get it
right!
Competitions and Promos
• Take great care with these!
• Facebook used to be really strict about them, things have got a
lot better recently
• There are four basic types of contests you can run on
Facebook: sweepstakes, essay, photo and video
• One of the biggest rules that Facebook insists on is clearly
stating that Facebook is not sponsoring the giveaway.
• The easiest thing to do is show your rules and guidelines loud
and clear on your contest
• Use a Third-Party App to run the contest – stay safe!

Don’t get ‘hung up’ about the number of ‘likes’ that you
have … always aim for targeted prospects who might
buy from you either now or in the long term
Remember that much of your social media output can be
automated or outsourced … though you should never
substitute automation for high quality interactions with
your business
I don’t believe that you should put all of your eggs in one
basket – remember what happened to MySpace!
Do try Facebook ads (but not promoted posts!) and do
consider learning about Facebook’s Power Editor,
particularly if you have an existing list of subscribers.
Remember at all times!
Facebook is about relationship building NOT sell, sell, sell!
