The National Ag Week program encourages every American to: Understandhow food and fiber products are produced. Value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strongeconomy. Appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products. Why Celebrate Agriculture? Agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis. But too few people truly understand this contribution. This is particularly the case in our schools, wherestudents may only be exposed to agriculture if they enroll in related vocational training. By building aware-ness, the AgricultureCouncil of America isencouraging youngpeople to considercareer opportunities inagriculture. Each American farmerfeeds more than 144people ... a dramaticincrease from 25 peoplein the 1960s. Quitesimply, Americanagriculture is doing more- and doing it better. Asthe world populationsoars, there is an evengreater demand for thefood and fiber producedin the United States. What Can I Do to Help?Put simply, get involved!Your participation in AgWeek is critical inhelping us spread thispositive message aboutagriculture. There areways you can lend yoursupport, includingsending a letter to yourlocal newspaper, callingyour Congressionalrepresentatives or simplysharing informationabout agriculture withyoungsters in yourcommunity.Where Can I Find MoreInformation?Contact the AgricultureCouncil of America at(913) 491-1895.

To whom it may concern:I wanted to respond to the article “Uncle Wally Wonders” inthe Vol. 63 No. 20 edition of Wise Shoppers. My name is Jennifer Brayton. I’m a resident of WashingtonCounty, specifically Fort Edward. I am a wife and mother of 2+ 2 step children. When I read the “Uncle Wally Wonders”exploring the passivism that plagues the Muslim communityand how it relates to the histories of other cultures that havesuffered genocidal holocaust, I kept nodding my head inagreement. I feel that the arguments against Islamic Extremismis either too aggressive or too dismissive in the mainstreammedia. But this article was spot on due to the many referencesmade to past happenings. However, there was one part that Iwould have liked to see being addressed; all of the people killedin the countries named in the article were first disarmed bytheir governments. I feel that our Federal Government hascontinuously ignored facts and subsequently catered to theenemies of the United States by wearing away the civil libertiesof our people in order to try and “fix” the threats posed byIslamic Extremists. This “silver bullet” (no pun intended)approach using a “one-size-fits-all” blanketing legislation hasproven ineffective and dangerous. Take a look at New York, for example. The SAFE Act was passed under the “message ofnecessity” by Andrew Cuomo in response to the Sandy Hookschool shooting. This despite the fact that New York alreadyhad strict and unsuccessful gun control laws on the books! Theresult has been a destabilization between citizens and theirlegislators as well as mistrust in law enforcement. Throw in abit of “See something, say something” and you’ll have NewYorker’s questioning one another causing social tensions andrampant fear in local communities. The SAFE Act has proveninsufficient and given the fact that 99% of gun owners refusedto comply with it anyone could argue it is unenforceable byConstitutional standards. Any knee jerk reactions by legislatorswe see in our future are sure to do more harm than good. Soalong with the absolutely spot on information given in thearticle, I would have also liked to see mention of the secondamendment and what it does to PREVENT most IslamicExtremists from causing damage in our country. It couldn’thurt to remind people of their rights and why they’re there!!Thanks so much for your time!Sincerely,Jennifer Brayton
