The Acts of the Apostles and Luke's Gospel use the same word, witnesses, to describe the disciples role in the new world order. In our culture, a witness can be passive, a mere onlooker, or more active, a formal expert who provides sworn testimony in a trial. The Greek word for witness is martyr. That raises the stakes for the disciples. They watch Jesus float into the air, after which an angel plainly appears to them and promises them that Jesus will come again. They see this happen. Immediately before ascending, Jesus makes a promise to them: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses . . . to the ends of the earth. Their mission is not a superficial task to confirm the idle rumor that Jesus really floated in mid-air. No, they must be willing to swear--even with their lives--that Jesus is the Christ who accepted an agonizing crucifixion on our behalf, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and prom-ised to come again to offer final salvation.

of hope and of light, fill all our lives. Come to us, Spirit of God. 2. Fill us with the fire of love. Burn in us now. Bring us together. Come to
us; dwell in us. Change our lives, oh Lord. Come to us, Spirit of God. 3. Send us the wings of new birth. Fill all the earth with the love you have
taught us. Let all creation now be shaken with love. Come to us, Spirit of God.
Holy: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest!

wine will flow like a sea of gladness to flood the depths of your soul.
“BE NOT AFRAID” 1. You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst. You

Refrain: Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come follow me, and I will give you rest. 2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the power of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you through it all. (refrain)

What is a ‘Concern’ that I Should Communicate?”
DID YOU KNOW? What constitutes a concern worth reporting? Parents have a responsibility to report concerns they have about another person’s behaviors or actions that could put their children — or any chil-dren — at risk. These concerns are anything that makes the parent un-easy or uncomfortable, or anything that a child reports made them feel uneasy or uncomfortable. Some examples of seemingly little things that can be worth reporting include: A teacher covering her glass classroom door with artwork, eliminating the ability to see into the classroom from the hall; a youth ministry icebreaker activity, where teens have to pass a mint candy from person to person using only toothpicks in their mouth, despite the discomfort of some participants. Giving Options to your Parish Gifts from an IRA If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA account to the parish. This law allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 annually directly to a qualified charitable organization without paying income tax on the distri-bution. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemized your tax deductions. Your gift can satisfy all or part of your required mini-mum distribution. Gifts of Stock Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of parish, school or favorite Catholic ministry. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits: • A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes • Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes • Avoidance of the tax on net investment income From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our programs. Please contact Brooke Glazer at 213-637-7381 or [email protected].
