Message from Fr. Timothy The Beginning of the Year of Grace Two Thousand Twenty This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent and the be-ginning of the new year in the Church. We rejoice at the news of the coming of the Lord. This year we will be reading through the Gospel according to Matthew. And today we begin at the end to remind us where we are going, why we need to get there and how. In to-day’s reading from the Letter to the Romans, Paul re-minds us that our salvation is at hand if we “put on Christ”. Isaiah reminds us that God will gather us all from every nation on his holy mountain. So today we begin anew our waiting and searching for the Lord. This is what Advent is all about: watchful expectation.

Other celebrations this week: Tuesday, 3 December – St. Francis Xavier, Priest. This cofounder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) carried the Gospel to far-away places (India, Sri Lanka, Malay-sia and Japan). He is the co-patron of the Apostleship of Prayer and of the foreign missions. Today we also begin the novena of preparation for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Wednesday, 4 December – St. John Damascene, Priest and Doctor of the Church. This saint was born in Damascus when it was already a Muslim city. He be-came a monk and a scholar who formulated a compre-hensive synthesis of Christian Dogma. He preached many homilies in honor of the Blessed Virgin.

Thursday, 5 December – This evening our parish will host the city novena of preparation for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mass will be at 6 pm in Span-ish followed by rosary and novena prayers in Spanish.

Friday, 6 December – St. Nicholas, Bishop. This 4th century saint is well known as a model pastor who cared for the poor. He is the real “Santa Claus” – pa-tron of children, bankers, pawnbrokers, sailors, per-fumers, brides, unmarried women, travelers, fisher-men, dock workers, brewers, poets, and prisioners, Russia, Greece, Sicily, Lorraine and Apulia in Italy where his remains are buried.

Saturday, 7 December – St. Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. He died on Holy Saturday in the year 397. While he was still a catechumen (new mem-ber preparing for baptism) he was elected by popular acclaim as bishop of Milan and consecrated on this day in 374. He was a compelling preacher and defender of orthodoxy against the Arian heresy. He converted and baptized St. Augustine. He is one of the 4 great doc-tors of the Latin Church. Fr. Timothy

Nos alegramos por la venida próxima del Señor. Este año estaremos reflexionando sobre el evangelio según san Mateo. Hoy comenzamos al final para poder re-cordar adónde vamos y cómo llegar. En la lectura de la carta a los Romanos, San Pablo nos recuerda que nuestra salvación está cercana si nos revistemos de Cristo. Isaías nos enseña que Dios va a reunir a todos los pueblos de la tierra sobre su monte santo. Así que hoy recomenzamos nuestra búsqueda y espera al Señor. Este santo del siglo 4º se conoce muy bien por ser pastor modelo que ayudaba a los pobres. Es el proto-tipo de “Santa Claus” – patrono de niños, banqueros, prestamistas, marineros, perfumistas, novias, muje-res solteras, peregrinos, pescadores, portuarios, cer-veceros, poetas, y prisioneros, la Russia, Grecia, Lo-rena y Apulia en Italia donde está sepultado. This book is a critical book in anyone's spiritual formation. The subtitle indicates that it is A Fervent Exhortation To All To Preserve And To Grow In Sanctifying Grace and thus have a share in the life of God Himself. How many of us think about the nature of Sanctifying Grace and what it means? This doctrine of grace is not simple, as may be seen from the sequence of errors in the understanding of grace seen along the path of the Church's history. But in this wonderful book, Fr. Matthias J. Scheeben ex- plains Divine Grace in a clear manner. It is written in direct style that everyone can understand. He reminds us of the integral role that grace plays in our daily lives and how a clear grasp of the basic principles of grace is useful, and may at times be indispensable, for direct- ing oneself and others on the road to salvation.
