Up to five handsets work from one base
You can make internal callsbetween handsets, transfer
an external caller to another handsetor hold three way calls between twohandsets and an external caller.
10 number memory
Store up to 10 of your mostimportant or frequently
dialled numbers in the memory. It’s then easy to dial numbers fromthe memory. Each handset has anindividual memory store of 10 numbers.
Make internal and external calls at the same time
With the maximum of fivehandsets registered to the
base station, your Synergy 500 lets youuse all of them together. One handsetcan be making an external call whiletwo handsets are being used to makeseparate internal calls.
Enhanced call clarity
Highly advanced digitaltechnology (DECT)
ensures much clearer calls than the older style phones.
Excellent handset range
Under ideal conditions youcan use your Synergy 500
handset at up to 300 metres from the base station outside, or up to 50 metres inside.

are available from BT Shops and theSynergy 500 Helpline 0845 769 7146.
Do not try to use any other powersupply unit except the one provided,otherwise you may permanentlydamage your Synergy 500. It may alsoinvalidate approval of this apparatus.To get a replacement Synergy 500 basestation power supply unit – Item Code872260 – and a Synergy 500 additionalhandset charger power supply unit – Item code 872259 – contact theSynergy 500 Helpline 0845 769 7146.
There is a slight chance yourphone could be damaged byan electrical storm. We
recommend that you unplug yourSynergy 500 from the mains powerand telephone socket during storms.
The Synergy 500 will producea certain amount of heatduring operation. Equally, the
handset as well as any additionalchargers you purchase can alsobecome warm during charging.We advise against placing theseproducts on antique, veneered orwooden surfaces as damage may occur.
Do not use the Synergy 500in damp, humid conditionssuch as bathrooms. Do not
expose the equipment or batteries tofire and water.
Do not dispose of usedbatteries with generalhousehold rubbish and do not
burn them.
Do not use the handsets inplaces where there areexplosive hazards.
If you wear a hearing aid,please note that the Synergy500 works by sending radio
signals between the base station andhandset. These signals may interferewith some hearing aids, causing ahumming noise.
Synergy 500 can interfere with otherelectrical equipment, e.g. answeringmachines, TV and radio sets, clockradio/alarms and computers if placedtoo close. It is recommended that youplace your Synergy 500 at least onemetre away from such appliances tominimise any risk of interference.
Make sure you connect the power andtelephone lines to the correct socketsin the base station.
Clean the handset and base stationwith a damp (not wet) cloth orantistatic wipe. Never use a dry clothas this may cause a static shock.Never spray cleaning fluid directlyonto the telephone.

Plan the location of yourSynergy 500
Your Synergy 500 works by sendingand receiving radio signals betweenthe base station and the handset.
The strength of the signal can dependon where you site the base station.Generally, the higher the base stationis located the better. An upstairs roomis ideal.
The following points should beconsidered:• It should be within 3 metres of a
power socket and phone socketotherwise extension cables will berequired.
• Try to avoid locations near metallicobstructions or electrical appliances,such as TV sets, fridges, computers,fluorescent lights, radiators, metalpipes and metal window frames.
• It is possible to wall mount handset2 with the charging cradle, forinstructions see page 26.
Setting upFollow these steps to set up your Synergy 500 ready for use
Please note
The Synergy 500 has a range of upto 300 metres outdoors and up to 50 metres indoors. It is possible that the range may be affected by being near water (e.g. large ponds, lakes and the sea) as well as large metalobjects (e.g. radiators, metalpartition walls and steel girders).
If you move out of range during acall you will hear a warning tone.You should move closer to the base station.

Before you use your Synergy 500handsets for the first time, it isimportant to have the handsetbatteries fully charged. Werecommend that you leave theSynergy 500 on charge for at least 16 hours.
Each Synergy 500 handset uses 2 Ni-Cad batteries, which are suppliedwith this product. Take care to put thebatteries in the correct +/– position.
3 Install the rechargeablebatteries in the handsets
4 Charge the handsets’batteries for at least 16 hours
2 Connect the power cableinto the charging unit
Plug the power cable into the socket located on the bottom of thecharging unit.
Connect the 3-pin adaptor into aconvenient mains socket.
Plug the power cable into the powersocket on your Synergy base station.
Plug the adaptor into the mains powersupply and switch on. The Power/InUse light comes on.

If you do not have modern phonesockets, call Freefone 0800 800 150and ask for a BT engineer to comeand fit the correct type. This is achargeable service.

5 Connect the telephone line cord

The telephone line cord is alreadyconnected to your Synergy base unit,so simply plug the telephone line cordinto the wall socket.
Please note
Handset 1 must be face up on thebase unit. The handset will notcharge if you place the handset face down. If your handsets do nothave the full initial 16 hours charge,you could find that your batteriesperformance is affected.
Battery low warning
If the In Use light on your handsetflashes and you hear a warning toneevery ten seconds you will need torecharge your handset.
Battery performance
To keep your batteries in the bestcondition, leave the handset off thebase station for a few hours at atime (after the initial 16 hourcharge).
After charging your Synergy handsetfor the first time, subsequentcharging time for the batteries isapproximately 6-8 hours. Batteriesand case may become warm duringcharging. This is normal and notdangerous.
Under ideal conditions, the handsetbatteries should give about 12 hourstalktime or 150 hours standby on asingle charge.
Please note, however, that new Ni-Cad batteries do not reach fullcapacity until they have been innormal use for several days.
Please note that while the Ni-Cadrechargeable batteries can beexpected to give years of service theydo not last forever.
Their actual lifespan depends onhow heavily they are used but overtime, their capacity to recharge willbegin to diminish and they willeventually need replacing.

Using your Synergy 500telephone
Press the green TALK button. You hear the dial tone.
DIAL Enter the number you wantand it is dialled.
Making and receiving calls
Press the green TALK button.OrPlace the handset back onthe base.
To make an external call

When the phone rings thegreen Power/In Use light on the base and the red InUse light on the handset will flash.
Press the TALK button toanswer the callOrIf the handset is on the base,simply pick it up and talk.
To receive a call
During a call you can adjust the volume of thehandset receiver. There are3 volume levels
Use the – VOL + button to reach the desired volume level.
To adjust the earpiece volume

Internal handset ringer
Your Synergy 500 Twin has a differentringer for internal calls. The melody isset to 4 and the volume to 2. Thiscannot be changed.
Base station settings
You can use your handset to change the melody on thebase. You can choose from 5 melodies. The pre-setmelody is 3.

Using additional handsetsRegistering an additional Synergy handset with the basestation or de-registering a handset
As well as your original handset, you can register up to a further 4additional handsets to your Synergy500 base station.
Each additional handset you purchasemust be registered to the base station.
Please note
The two handsets provided with yourSynergy 500 Twin come pre-registered to your base station.
Remember to charge the batteries ofnew handsets for at least 16 hours.

The two handsets provided with yourSynergy 500 Twin come with therelevant numbered plastic labelalready attached to the top of your handset.
It is important to number yourhandsets when you are registeringand using multiple handsets.
Attach the relevant numbered plasticlabels provided onto the top of yourSynergy 500.
Pre-set PINs
Your Synergy 500 comes with a pre-set PIN which you will need to use to perform various functionson your phone.
Base station PIN is 0000 – usedwhen adjusting base station settingsand registration of new handsets.

Numbering your handsets
Press and hold the PAGEbutton on the base until youhear a double beep.
The following procedureshould be followed on thehandset you wish to register.
Press the QUICKDIAL button.
Press the ✱ button and thenthe # button.
Enter the number of the KEYPAD desired base unit. If you
have one base unit the number will be 1. If you have two, the second will be number 2 and so on.
PIN Enter the base station PIN(original setting: 0000).
Press the QUICKDIAL buttonand wait for the confirmationbeep. The handset number is automatically defined by the base. (See page 20for more details of “Operatingwith additional base stations”.)
To register a handset
You have to use a differenthandset to de-registeranother handset from a basestation, i.e. if you want to de-register handset 2 youcan use handset 1.

Press the INTERCOMbutton. Your caller can heara waiting tone.
KEYPAD Enter the handset numberto which you want totransfer the call (If thehandset is not answered you can return to your callerby pressing the INTERCOMbutton again).
When the handset isanswered press theCONFERENCE button. Youcan now start your three-way conversations.
Press the green TALK buttonand you will be disconnectedfrom the external caller andthe other handset user,however they will still be ona call together.

If you are connected to a digitalexchange, you can subscribe to arange of BT Select Services. If youwish to subscribe to any of theseservices contact us on Freefone 0800800 152 business, 150 residential,8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
If an incoming call arrives while youare already engaged on a telephonecall, you will hear a soft beep every 5 seconds (this beep is not audible tothe person you are speaking to).
Instead of the engaged tone, the secondcaller will hear an announcement tohold on as you are aware that there isa second call.

Within guaranteeIf you experience a problem with yourSynergy 500 you should contact theSynergy 500 Helpline on 0845 7697146. Calls are charged at local callrates. If the problem is not remedied,you will be advised to contact youroriginal point of purchase.
Some retailers offer extended warrantyschemes for cover outside the initial12-month period. Please ask them fordetails.

How many phones can you have?All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be connected toany one telephone line. The Synergy500 has a REN of 1. Any otherinstrument provided by BT may beassumed to have a REN of 1 unlessotherwise stated. A total REN of 4 is allowed.
Only use approved power adaptor:Item code 872260 for Synergy 500main base unit power adaptor;Item code 872259 for Synergy 500additional handset charger poweradaptor.
Only use approved batteries item code872261.

Switchboard compatibility
Press the QUICKDIALbutton.
Press the ✱ button, then the2 button.
Press either 0 for TONEdialling or 1 for PULSEdialling.
Press the QUICKDIAL buttonto confirm.
With some switchboards itmay be helpful to dial apause after entering thePSTN pre-fix code, e.g. 9, 11etc. to enable you to get anoutside line.
You can therefore enter apause when storing amemory number:
Press the QUICKDIAL button.The handset In Use light will flash.
KEYPAD Enter the memory locationnumber (0 -9) under whichyou want the number to bestored.
KEYPAD Enter the PSTN pre-fix codee.g. 9.
Press the REDIAL button.This will add a 3 secondpause.
KEYPAD Then enter the telephonenumber.
Press the QUICKDIAL button.
You will hear a confirmationtone.

No dial toneIs the telephone line cord plugged intothe phone socket?
Check that the base station is connectedto the mains power and switched on.
No ring on the handset or base stationThe ringer volume may be switched tosilent. To adjust the ringer volume onthe handset, see page 15, on the basestation, see page 16.

Emergency calls
The emergency services can becontacted in the UK by dialling 999or 112 which is valid in any countrythat is a member of the Europeancommunity.
Please note
If your Synergy 500 is connected to a switchboard/PBX, you may have to dial an access number before 999to contact the emergency services.Some switchboards cannot dial outduring a power failure.
The Synergy 500 will not work when the power fails. Alternativearrangements should be made foraccess to emergency services.
Check that the base station is pluggedinto the phone socket.
Check that the base station is pluggedinto the mains power and switched on.
Buzzing noise on my radio, TV,computer or hearing aidSometimes, your Synergy 500 caninterfere with other electricalequipment if it is placed too close.
It is recommended that you placeyour Synergy 500 and other Synergyhandsets at least one metre away fromsuch appliances to avoid any risk ofinterference.
The charger does not appear to beworkingCheck that:• the power adaptor is properly
plugged in to the charger• your handset has slotted correctly
into the charger• the battery is correctly fitted into
the handset
Are you using the correct poweradaptor?Synergy 500 base station powersupply unit is Item Code 872260, andthe Synergy 500 additional handsetcharger power supply unit is ItemCode 872259.

Using your Synergy 500telephone
Press the green TALK button. You hear the dial tone.
DIAL Enter the number you wantand it is dialled.
Making and receiving calls
Press the green TALK button.OrPlace the handset back onthe base.
To make an external call

When the phone rings thegreen Power/In Use light on the base and the red InUse light on the handset will flash.
Press the TALK button toanswer the callOrIf the handset is on the base,simply pick it up and talk.
To receive a call
During a call you can adjust the volume of thehandset receiver. There are4 volume levels
Use the – VOL + button to reach the desired volume level.
To adjust the earpiece volume

Press and hold the PAGEbutton on the base until youhear a beep.
The following procedureshould be followed on thehandset you wish to register.
Press the QUICKDIAL button.
Press the ✱ button and thenthe # button.
Enter the number of the KEYPAD desired base unit. If you
have one base unit the number will be 1. If you have two, the second will be number 2 and so on.
PIN Enter the base station PIN(original setting: 0000).
Press the QUICKDIAL buttonand wait for the confirmationbeep. The handset number is automatically defined by the base
To register a handset
You can use one handset tode-register another handsetfrom a base station.
Press the QUICKDIAL button.
Press the ✱ button, then the9 button.
Enter the handset number KEYPAD to de-register.
To de-register a handset

Press the INTERCOM button.
Enter the handset number KEYPAD you want. The called
handset will ring.
Press the INTERCOM buttonto end the call.

You can talk to one externalcall and another internalcaller at the same time onyour Synergy handset.
During a call with anexternal caller:
Press the INTERCOMbutton. Your caller can heara waiting tone.
KEYPAD Enter the handset numberto which you want totransfer the call (If thehandset is not answered you can return to your callerby pressing the INTERCOMbutton again).
When the handset isanswered press theCONFERENCE button. Youcan now start your three-way conversations.
You can stop the three-waycall by pressing theCONFERENCE button. Youwill still be connected toyour external caller
Alternatively you couldpress the green TALK buttonand you will be disconnectedfrom the external caller andthe other handset user, however they will still be ona call together.
