Safety information

General

Only use the power supply unitincluded with the product. Using anunauthorised power supply willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone. The item codefor the power supply unit is 872264, as stated on the underside of the base unit.For the handset use only the approved rechargeable battery pack.Under no circumstances should non-rechargeable batteries be used. Using unapproved batteries willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone.Radio signals transmitted between the handset and base may causeinterference to some hearing aids.Do not dismantle the handset or basestation. This could expose you to highvoltages or other risks. Contact thehelpline for repairs.Never dispose ofbatteries in a fire. There is a seriousrisk of explosion and/or the release of highly toxic chemicals.

Cleaning

Simply clean the handset and basestation with a damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never usehousehold polish as this will damagethe product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock.

Environmental

Do not expose to direct sunlight.

The product may heat up when thebatteries are being recharged. This is normal. However, to avoid damagewe recommend that you do not placethe product on antique/veneeredwood.

Do not expose your product to fire,explosive or other hazardousconditions.

There is a slight chance that yourphone could be damaged by anelectrical storm. We recommend thatyou unplug the power and telephoneline cord for the duration of thestorm.

Setting upFollow these steps to set up your Quartet 3100 ready for use.

Plan the location

Situate your Quartet 3100 close enoughto the mains power socket and telephonesocket so that the cables will reach.

Make sure it is at least 1 metre awayfrom other electrical products to avoidinterference.

Do not situate the product in thebathroom or other humid areas.

Your Quartet 3100 works by sendingand receiving radio signals between thebase unit and the handset.

The strength of the signal depends onwhere you site the base unit and howthe aerials are deployed.

The higher the base unit is located, the better. An upstairs room is ideal.

2 Plug the power supplycord into the socket on theunderside of the base unit

Note

Do not connect the telephone linecord to the phone socket until thehandset is fully charged.

This will prevent the risk of the phonebeing answered before the batteriesare charged, which may prevent themfrom reaching maximum capacity.

3 Connect the base unitpower supply to a powersocket

The green Power/In use light will comeon when the power is switched on.

The power supply unit must remainplugged in all the time.

4 Charge the handset

Your handset comes with arechargeable battery pack pre-installedbut the battery pack will needcharging.

When you first use your Quartet 3100,the rechargeable battery in the handsetneeds charging for 24 hours.

Place the handset on the base unit,ensuring the contacts are touching.

The red CHARGING light will come on.

The charging light will remainconstantly lit while the handset isplaced on the base unit, even when thehandset batteries are fully charged.

Note

When fully charged and in goodcondition, the handset will provide upto 7 hours talktime or 72 hours standby.

If you are making a call and thehandset battery is running low youwill hear a warning tone every 10-15 seconds.

Place the handset on the base unit torecharge.

However, the charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will reduce withtime as they wear out, so reducing thetalk/standby time of the handset.Eventually they will need to be replaced.New batteries can be obtained fromthe Helpline. Please see page 39 forinstructions on how to install a newbattery pack.

5 When the handset hasbeen charged for 24 hoursplug the line cord into thetelephone wall socket

6 Changing your handsetfascias

There are 3 removeable handset fasciasto choose from (one is fitted already onthe handset). Press in the centre of thefascias and slide upwards to take off.

To put a new fascia on, slide the fasciadown onto the handset making sure thatit clips into place securely.

To get the longest possible life fromyour battery, leave the handset off thebase unit for a few hours each day.

Using your Quartet 3100

Making and receiving calls

To make an external call

Lift the handset off the baseunit.

Press the TALK button.

The green In Use light on thebase unit begins to flash andthe handset display will showthe icon while it is in use.

Listen for the dialling tone.

Dial the number you want.

Your Quartet 3100 has a menu drivendisplay. The UP and DOWN buttonsallow you to scroll through the menuand the OPTION buttons below thedisplay allow you to select options withineach menu.

Note

To quit a menu at any time, press theCLEAR button. This will take you backone step. To return to the standbyscreen keep pressing the CLEAR button.

Preparatory dialling

First enter the number to bedialled. The number is shownon the display. If you make amistake, press the CLEARbutton to remove any incorrectdigits.

To end a call

Press the TALK button.OrReplace the handset on thebase unit.

To receive a call

When the phone rings:

The handset display will showEXTERNAL CALL or if you havesubscribed to a Caller DisplayService it will show your caller’stelephone number or name ifyou have stored it in yourdirectory (unless the numberhas been withheld or is aninternational number).

If your handset is on the baseunit, simply pick it up to answerthe call.

Or

If your handset is off the baseunit, press the TALK button.

Call timer

Your handset will automatically timethe duration of all external calls. Thehandset display shows the call durationboth during your call and for a fewseconds after it is completed.

Note

An Inductive Coupler has been builtinto the handset to improve soundquality for people using hearing aids.Switch your hearing aid to T andadjust the position of the handset untilyou get the best reception.

If you have entered thenumber correctly, press theTALK button to dial thenumber. The display will showCalling.

Note

Your Quartet 3100 handset uses atelescopic aerial that should be pulledout when on a call to obtain the bestsignal and reception available.

To select an alternativechannel during a call

Your Quartet 3100 automaticallyscans the available radiochannels and selects the bestquality reception to use.

If you experience interferenceduring a call, press the CHANoptions button.

Your caller will momentarily beplaced on hold. The displaywill flash Seeking Channel andyour handset will select analternative channel and thenreturn to your caller.

To cancel channel seeking atany time, press the CLEARbutton.

Note

The handset range is up to 250 metresfrom the base unit in ideal conditions.The stated range of this product ismeasured in open field conditions. Walls,ceilings and metal structures willreduce the maximum range.

If you start to go out of range whileusing the phone, you will hear warningbeeps. Move closer to the base unit. If you do not move back into range yourcall may be disconnected. You cancheck if you are in (or out of) range by pressing the button and thenthe button when you are in standby mode. The display will showeither IN RANGE or OUT OF RANGE for afew seconds.

Secrecy/Music on hold

When on a call you can talk to someonein the same room without your callerhearing.

To switch Secrecy on and off

To switch on during a call:

Press and release the SECoption button.

The display will flash Secrecyand your caller will be put onhold. Both you and your callerwill hear music until the SECoptions button is pressed again.

You can now talk to someonein the same room without yourcaller hearing you.

To switch off during a call:

Press and release the SECoption button again to returnto your caller.

To adjust the earpiece volume

During a call you can adjustthe volume of the handsetreceiver. The earpiece volumewill remain at the volume level you set until you adjust itagain.

During a call:Press the UP or DOWN buttonto increase or decrease theearpiece volume.

The display will show thecurrent volume setting, e.g.

As you increase or decreasethe volume the boxes willshow the volume level.

For example, if you wish toenter the name TOM:

To enter the letter T, press the 8 button. The cursor willautomatically move to the right.

To enter the letter O, press the6 button three times.

To enter the letter M, pressthe 6 button.

If you enter a characterincorrectly use the CLEARbutton to delete it and thenenter the correct character.

When you have entered thename correctly, press the OKoption button to confirm.

The display will show EnterNumber and the cursor willflash underneath.

Enter the telephone numberyou want to store.

If you enter a digit incorrectlyuse the CLEAR button todelete it and then enter thecorrect digit.

When you have entered thenumber correctly, press theSAVE option button to confirm.

50 Name and NumberDirectory

You can store fifty of your mostfrequently used names and telephonenumbers in the directory. Please notethat numbers can be no longer than 20 digits and names no longer than 13 characters.

To store a name and numberin the directory

Press the DIRECTORY optionbutton.

Press the NEW option button.

The display will show EnterName and the cursor will flashunderneath.

Enter the name using theletters on the keypad buttons.

You can change between upper andlower case by pressing the A-a optionbutton and enter a space betweencharacters by pressing the 1 buttontwice. You can also use the ✱, #and 1 buttons for other punctuationcharacters.

To view and dial a name andnumber in the directory

Press the DIRECTORY optionbutton.

The first entry in the directorywill be displayed (if there areno entries in the directory thedisplay will show DirectoryEmpty).

Use the UP or DOWN buttonto scroll through the directoryto find the entry you want.

Or

To search alphabetically, pressthe relevant keypad number,for example to find TOM, pressthe 8 button and scrollthrough the entries under T.

When the entry you want isdisplayed, press the TALKbutton to dial the number.

The display will show EntrySaved and then show the nameand number you have entered.

Press the CLEAR button untilyou return to the standbyscreen.

Please note that you MUSTenter a name and a number, ifyou do not your entry will notbe stored and the display willshow Error. The display willthen return to the numberentry field.

Stored numbers can includeswitchboard and networkservices that use the ✱ and # buttons as well as PAUSEand RECALL functions.

To enter a pause in a directorynumber, press the button.

Press the CLEAR button to delete it.

The display will show EditNumber and the number willhave a cursor flashing after it.

Press the CLEAR button todelete all unwanted digits.

Enter the new digit(s).

To automatically redial thelast number called

Press the TALK button andwait for the dialling tone.

Press the LNR button.

The last number you calledwill be shown on the displayand dialled automatically.

To redial a number from theredial list

Press the LNR button.

The last number you calledwill be shown on the display (if you have this numberstored in your directory thename associated with it willalso be shown).

Use the UP or DOWN buttonto scroll through the redial listto the number you require.

Press the TALK button whenthe number you want to redialis displayed.

The number will be dialledautomatically.

Your handset automatically saves thelast 5 telephone numbers dialled into aredial list. You can then redial any ofthe last 5 numbers called, or copynumbers from the list into the directory,or delete them from the redial list.

The display will show EnterName.

Enter a name using thekeypad (as shown on page 16,“To store a name and numberin the directory”).

Press the OK option button.

The display will show EnterNumber.

Edit the number if you need toby pressing the CLEAR buttonto delete any unwanted digits.

Press the SAVE options buttonto confirm.

The display will show EntrySaved.

Press the CLEAR button untilyou return to the standbyscreen.

Note

You will not be able to copy a number in the redial list tothe directory if the directory is already full. If you try to,the display will showDirectory Full. You will needto delete a number in thedirectory first, see page 18.

Paging

You can page the handset from the baseunit to alert a handset user that theyare wanted or to locate a missinghandset. However, paging calls cannotbe answered by a handset.

To page the handset

Press the PAGE button on thebase unit.

The handset(s) will ring. (The base unit will also ring toconfirm paging is working.)

You can stop paging at anytime by pressing the PAGEbutton on the base unit or anybutton on the handset(s).

(If you press the TALK buttonyou will stop the paging butwill also seize the line. Pressthe TALK button a second timeto clear the line.)

Paging will continue to ring for approximately one minute.If the paging is not answeredafter this time your handsetwill return to standby.

Base settings

To adjust the base ringervolume

The base has 3 ringer volumesettings: Off, Low and High.The default setting is High.

Press the UP or DOWN buttonuntil the display shows BaseSettings.

Press the OK options button.

The display shows RingerVolume.

Press the OK option button.

The current ringer volumesetting will be highlighted.

Use the UP or DOWN buttonto highlight which volumesetting you require: Off, Lowor High. You will hear a samplering for the High or Lowsettings.

To change the base ringermelody

To lock or unlock the keypad

You can lock the keypad so thatit cannot be used accidentallywhile carrying it around.

BT Select Services

If you have subscribed to your NetworkProvider’s Caller Display Service, youwill be able to see your caller’s numberon your handset display (provided it isnot withheld) prior to answering the call.

For example, your handset display willlook like this:

If you have your caller’s name andnumber stored in the directory you willsee the name on the display instead.

IMPORTANT

To use Caller Display you must firstsubscribe to the service from yourNetwork Provider. A quarterly fee ispayable. For more information on BT’s Select Services call BT free on0800 800 150.

Caller Display

Calls list

The Calls list holds up to 30 telephonenumbers and they are stored in theorder they were received. The caller’sdetails are stored in the Calls list whetheryou answered the call or not. If a call isreceived when the list is full, the oldestentry will be deleted automatically.

When a new call is received in the Callslist the icon will flash on the displayand the calls counter above the iconwill show how many new calls you have received. You need to press the option button to enter the Calls list.

Call Waiting

If an incoming call arrives while you arealready engaged on a telephone call,you will hear a soft beep every 5 seconds(this beep is not audible to the personyou are speaking to).

If you have also subscribed to a CallerDisplay Service, the caller’s number orname if stored in the directory will beshown on the display for 20 seconds,after this time the display will return toyour first caller’s details.

Instead of the engaged tone, thesecond caller will hear an announcementto hold as you are aware that there is asecond call.

IMPORTANT

To use Call Waiting you must firstsubscribe to the service from yourNetwork Provider. A quarterly fee ispayable. For more information on BT’s Select Services call BT free on0800 800 150.

To use Call Waiting

You can answer the secondcall, without disconnecting yourfirst caller, by pressing the CALL WAITING button. Thefirst caller will be put on hold.

When you have spoken to thesecond caller you can return tothe first caller by pressing theCALL WAITING button again.You can switch back and forthbetween the two calls withoutdisconnecting either if you wish.

If you disconnect the first call,press the TALK button afterspeaking to the first caller.

The handset will then ring.Press the TALK button againand continue with the secondcaller.

The second caller will only becharged for their call from themoment you answer and notwhile they are waiting for yourinitial contact.

1571 Voice mail indication

This feature will only work if you have subscribed to BT Answer 1571 orCall Minder and switched the 1571feature ON.

BT Answer 1571 and Call Minder areautomated answering services located atyour local telephone exchange which willtake messages when you are out, engagedon another call or on the internet.

To enable your Quartet 3100 to let youknow you have messages you must firstsubscribe to a BT messaging service.

BT Answer 1571 is a basic answeringservice and is completely free of chargeto BT customers. To activate the service,dial Freefone 0800 003 800.

For information on Call Minder, call BT on Freefone 0800 800 150. This is a chargeable service.

Transferring calls

You can transfer calls betweenhandsets that are registered tothe base unit.

Your Quartet 3100 is guaranteed for aperiod of 12 months from the date ofpurchase. Subject to the terms listedbelow the guarantee will provide for therepair of, or at BT’s or its agent’sdiscretion, the option to replace theQuartet 3100 or any component thereof,(other than batteries), which isidentified as faulty or below standard,or as a result of inferior workmanshipor materials. Products over 28 days oldfrom the date of purchase may bereplaced with a refurbished product.

The conditions of this guarantee are:• The guarantee shall only apply to

defects that occur within the 12 month guarantee period.

• Proof of purchase is provided.• The equipment is returned to BT or

its agent as instructed.• This guarantee does not cover any

faults or defects caused by accidents,misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect,

tampering with the equipment, or anyattempt at adjustment or repair otherthan through approved agents.

• This guarantee does not affect yourstatutory rights.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be connected to anyone telephone line. Your Quartet 3100has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 isallowed. If the total REN of 4 isexceeded, the telephones may not ring.With different telephone types there isno guarantee of ringing, even when theREN is less than 4.

Please note that any additionalhandsets and chargers that you registerhave a REN of 0.

Unplug the white connector andremove the old battery pack.

Plug the new battery packconnector in and lower thebattery pack into recess thenreplace lid.

Note

When fully charged and in goodcondition, the handset will provide upto 7 hours talktime or 72 hoursstandby.

If you are making a call and thehandset battery is running low you willhear a warning tone every 10-15seconds.

Place the handset on the base unit torecharge.

However, the charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will reduce withtime as they wear out, so reducing thetalk/standby time of the handset.

To get the longest possible life fromyour battery, take the handset off thebase unit for a few hours each day.

Call security

Your Quartet 3100 has its own digitalsecurity code that prevents othercordless phone owners from using yourphone line. This ensures that you arecharged only for calls using your phone.However, all approved cordless phonesuse radio signals to communicatebetween the base unit and cordlesshandset units. It is therefore possible thatyour conversations could be overheardby other people, on their cordlessphones, or on ordinary radios that usethe same radio frequencies.

As this problem applies equally to allsimilar cordless phones currentlyavailable in the UK, call privacy cannotbe guaranteed. However, the securitycoding prevents unauthorised use ofyour line.

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards, which support tone andpulse dialling and timed break recall. If in doubt please consult your serviceprovider.

Help and adviceIf you have any problems using your Quartet 3100, this section willgive you the most common, easy to follow solutions.
