Todd County Commissioners

approved another $24,950 to fur-

ther repair the foundation of the

Historic Courthouse at their

Tuesday August 16 meeting. At an

  August 2 meeting they approved

the expenditure of an additional

$88,080. The money is coming from

the renovation project’s contin-

gency fund. The $312,000 fund is

part of the project’s overall $3.6

million budget. The foundation

problem, which was brought to the

commissioners attention in July,

involves portions of the building on

its west and east sides. The base-

ment is being excavated in these

areas and the foundation is not as

substantial as it was originally

thought by the architects.

  At the August 16 meeting,

Commissioner Gerald Ruda asked

the architect if the renovated build-

ing will last another 100 years

after the renovation is completed.

Ruda said during a series of public

meetings last year, Todd County

voters had been assured the build-

ing would last at least another cen-

tury. Once the foundation has been

reinforced and rebuilt, the building

will be even stronger than it has

been previously, the architect told

Ruda.

Commissioners expressed con-

cern the foundation repairs were

depleting the contingency fund.

They asked the architect, and proj-

ect manager Earl Fuechtmann, if 

the fund was adequate to cover

future surprises. Fuechtmann, and

the architect, said they could only

guess at the answer to that ques-

tion. Approximately $123,000 of 

the contingency fund has been

spent.

ZONING

  At the recommendation of the

Planning and Zoning Commission,

commissioners accepted two condi-

tional use permit applications and

rejected one. The applicationdenied by the commissioners was

made by Jeff and Steven Kobliska.

The Kobliskas had removed 6,000

cubic feet of soil and numerous

trees on two lots in Sylvan Shores

in Fawn Lake Township without a

permit. The county stopped the

work when the violation was dis-

covered in June. The area is in a

shoreland district. The Planning

Commission recommended a

$1,200 fine be levied against the

Kobliskas for failing to obtain a

conditional use permit. They also

recommended the area be restored

in a way that will minimize ero-

sion. County commissionersaccepted both recommendations.

Jeff Kobliska, who was present at

the meeting, said it will cost

between $2,500 and $3,000 to

restore the area. He said he want-

ed to restore the area.
