Zion finished the month of October with a negative cash flow of ($3,337). We are still forecasting to fin-ish the year with a balanced budget. Our committee will be focused on finalizing our 2013 budget in December. We are looking for ways to generate an additional $7,000 to grow our operating budget next year. The details of the proposed 2013 budget were discussed during the stewardship forum on November 4. 2013 Time and Talent Surveys and Pledge Cards were collected during worship on No-vember 18. If you didn’t have a chance to bring them to church, please mail them to the church office, to the attention of the Financial Secretary.

A copy of the current Treasurer’s Report is posted on the bulletin board in the Banquet Room. Thank you to everyone who has given and continues to support our ministry at Zion. The summaries below are a snapshot of the health of our congregation:

Finance/Stewardship Committee Update By Carl Hendrickson, Gary Larsen, Stan Nelson

Finance/Stewardship committee members: Carl Hendrickson, Gary Larsen and Stan Nelson

Finance & Stewardship

The committee continues to monthly monitor the income and expenses. Income exceeded budget pro-jections in the following areas: Pledges, loose offering, sale of stock, apartment rent (2 months), ESL rent and LNA/LCD grant. Expenses exceeded budget projections in the following areas: facility improvements-gutter and roofing down payments, 2015 pledge envelopes and bldg. maint supplies. Income is high due to the sale of NVEC stock for the new gutters and roofing repair. Some of that expense was in August, the balance will be in September. Thank you to all who have given and continue to support our ministry at Zion. A copy of the current Treasurer’s Report is posted on the bulletin board in the Banquet Room. If you would be interested in serving on the Finance/Stewardship Committee contact one of the committee members. The summaries below are a snapshot of the financial health of our congregation:

September 28:

Altar Flowers in 2015 This year is a time for discerning energies and ministries at Zion. The logistics of altar flowers have inspired conversation about how these decorations and announcements could work more simply. Some have suggested we use potted plants and/or silk flowers instead of fresh cut flowers. Others have asked about sponsoring single roses instead of full bouquets. If you have strong feelings about the ministry of Sunday altar flowers, please contact Pastor Meta this month.

The Zoom House mission is to serve families in transition by providing safe, affordable housing in a community that offers services that promote and support family and economic self-sufficiency, and offers opportunities for educational advancement, job training, spiritual growth, and neighborhood involvement. Learn more at www.thezoomhouse.org.

ZOOM House families continue to come to Zion for Food Shelf items. The Food Shelf is open 4 times each month—the last two Monday mornings and the last two Thursday afternoons. Our thanks to Zion folks for donating 60 pounds of cleaning supplies and nonperishable foods on the September ZOOM Can Do Sunday. (the third Sunday of each month is ZOOM Can Do Sunday but items can be accepted anytime.) Thanks also to Patty Kane, Susan Ryan, Lil Jeffreys and Linda Torkelson for “hosting” these days. If you are interested in helping, call Zion’s office.

The Ice Cream Social held on Sunday, September 7th was a blast! The ZOOM kids loved to blow bubbles—and watch the wind carry them as high as Zion’s steeple! Rootbeer floats were a great hit also.

See the box just below for other ways that you can help ZOOM.

There have been several changes in the residents at ZOOM during September .. Folks moving out of the building, moving around within the building and new folks moving into the building. Lots of little ones … both coming and going. Some moving out have completed the “program” and are going into permanent affordable housing … congratulations to them!

Put Saturday, March 28th, 2015 on your calendars. That will be the date of the 2015 Annual ZOOM HOUSE GALA, their annual fund raising event. Watch for more details later in the year. It will be held at the Metropolitan in Golden Valley.

For more info on how to be more involved, please call Kirstin @ ZOOM House, 612-825-2825 x1, Mon-Thursday, 8am-1pm.

From the Pastor… We’ve been anticipating these conversations and projects for years now, yet the Capital Appeal is suddenly upon us! I enjoy discussions about worship space because the sanctuary holds all kinds of spiritual and emotional weight for each one of us. It’s about much more than windows and carpet. It’s about memories and hospitality, stewardship and change. Capital Campaigns didn’t seem all that exciting to me as a young adult in the church…until I journeyed through the process at my first call congregation. I learned that change is hard.

Asking people to imagine a comfortable place looking a little different. Asking people to weigh maintenance and mission – what they prioritize and why. Asking people to give more than they already do.

I didn’t think I would be affected by changes to the architecture in my four short years at St. John’s. I wasn’t particularly passionate about any of the projects or able to give what I deemed an extraordinary amount. But I trusted that the projects would embody something more than repaired glass, basic upgrades, and a wider narthex. Then I leaned in, sharing my voice, and offering my gift. The windows came and went for repair slowly. The narthex construction was noisy and dusty. The kitchen was torn apart and new installations were made. And then, to my surprise, I was very affected by it all! Everyone was. Some were most taken by the way the bright windows cast colored sunlight all over the walls. Others felt a new sense of belonging since they had been involved during the kitchen project and now knew where to find things. Everyone was moved by the brighter, wider narthex that welcomed old members and new visitors alike. There’s something about a building project that bonds a whole faith community. There are physical signs of the discern-ment, generosity, and teamwork that went into making something new. Reimaging our worship space means everyone – new and old – gets to celebrate our past and embrace the future. And that’s a beautiful thing. So join us for worship and conversation about where we’ve been and where we’re going next. Things will change – they always do. And when change comes, it will be about so much more than windows and carpet. Thank God!

- With Joy, Pastor Meta

This year’s presenter is titled “Deeply Faithful; Deeply Flawed: Telling the Truth about Ourselves, the World, and God”. The event is Friday evening and Saturday morning the weekend of November 7 & 8. More information is posted on the bulletin board by the church office. If you would like to attend with others from Zion, RSVP to Pastor Meta by October 26th.

“loaded” school bags and markers galore!

THANKS for your sharing!

Your generosity is amazing! Thanks to Mike

Robbins for delivering it all to Lyndale!

We are on a SEARCH for items for the Meatball and Lutefisk Dinner

Silent Auction! Take a look around. Do you have something that would

be great for the auction? Something you bought but never used? A picture you no longer want to have on your wall? Quality items-

new or gently used.

Talk to Carolyn Due about your ideas and donations.

Thank You, Lawn Mowers!

Special thanks to Gary Larsen, Dick Olson, Danny Lewis, Lyndy West, Roger Dokken, Mike Robbins, and Carl Hendrickson for keeping our lawn mowed all summer.

If you’d like to help keep our curb appeal high in October, contact the church office to choose a week.

Join us for Church Council Meetings - Every Third Tuesday

Council meetings are always open events. We begin with devotions, one-to-one conversations, and news from the

neighborhood. These are great opportunities to grow in faith and spend time with our congregation’s leadership. Come to

listen or share your thoughts - we begin at 6:30pm.

THE LYNDALE COMMUNITY DINNER Wednesdays at 6:00pm

Come to feast on healthy & delicious food with friends and

neighbors, new and old!

Kids gather around Bible stories and activi-ties at 5:30pm while volunteers prepare dinner in the kitchen. Then the menu is introduced and folks share what they’re grateful for this week. It’s an inspiring list!

Sit with old friends or meet someone new. Karen often shares lessons about portion control and cooking at home.

Favorite menus include lasagna, sweet & sour pork and chili. Dinner always includes fresh fruits and veggies. Join us for dinner and stick around for Recovery Worship.

Notes from Jane The choir is back! We practice on Sunday morn-ings before worship at 8:45am. Sing with us occa-sionally or on a regular basis. This fall the choir will be experimenting with ways we can lead and encourage vocal confidence in the pews. Let us know what you think!

Guest Musicians This month we’ll welcome Cheryl Jahnke playing piano/organ duets with Jane on October 5. Emily Hagen will play viola with us on a Sunday morning in October. Dave Balazs will be back on Reformation Sun-day to play timpani. We’ll have a guest trumpeter too!

Handbells will play in worship on Christmas Eve. We’ll begin rehearsals on November 5 at 5:30pm. This is a won-derful way to participate for a season – we only rehearse for a few weeks prior to playing in worship and then break for awhile. If you can sight read music, you can play handbells. Give it a try!

Who is this “Jane Wasiluk”? In case you haven’t heard, I got married on Saturday, August 2 to the most wonderful

man in the world (a.k.a. Rick Wasiluk). Pastor Meta officiated and we were surrounded by our children, special

friends, and dear family. A beautiful day in so many ways! We offer a big thank you to Deana Miller and the choir

members for hosting a wedding reception at Zion during coffee hour on Sunday, August 10. Thank you for celebrat-

ing our joy with us!

PROPERTY COMMITTEE NEWS Deana Miller, Chair

Our FIRST SATURDAY has a new “component” … folks from Bethlehem Lutheran are invited to come and help! On September 6th two folks from Bethlehem attended and together with Zion folks, many things were accomplished. The biggest task was the dis-manteling of the old shed in the parking lot! There is another list of tasks to be done on October 4th….come on along and join in… it’s good to meet the Bethlehem folks. Without a custodian/maintenance person at Zion, there are always things that need to be done.

We are scheduling our FALL CLEAN UP DAY to coincide with FIRST SATURDAY … come about 10:00am and help out! As usual, there will be a list on the door of each room/area in the building … you can find a room, look at the list and tackle it. When it is completed, scratch it off the list so the next person knows it is done.

This month’s mystery …. Where does the puddle of water on the Banquet Room floor come from? About three times a week a puddle appears … but we can’t figure out where it is coming from? We will continue to watch and see what we can find.

Thanks to all who have helped with the lawn mowing this summer. Still should have a few more times that the lawn might need mowing. If you are interested and available, please call the office.

The Property Committee: Alden Anderson, Roger Dokken, Dale Mendenhall, Deana Miller, John & Norma Pietz.

Contact these leaders if you have property questions or concerns. If you are passionate about a particular project, join us in a limited/focused capacity. We welcome your ideas and energy.

THE CLMO COMMITTEE Chair Dennis Werneke (Congregational Life & Mission Outreach)

This Committee attended Nicollet Open Streets—setting up a “booth area” with one table with general information about Zion and a second with craft like “to do items” - fake tattoos, string and bead bracelets and Rainbow loom (rubber band) bracelets. Lots of neighborhood folks were invited to Zion for the Lyndale Community Dinner and worship. Hope to see some of them here!

Next is the Meatball & Lutefisk Dinner and then the Lyndale Community Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Lots of opportu-nities for volunteering!

Committee members are Dennis Werneke, Nedra Granquist, LuAnn Giles, Gary Larsen, Deana Miller, Joan Olson and Pastor Meta.

Worship Committee meets on the fourth Sunday of the

month at 11:30am. You are welcome to come and we’d love to hear you share your thoughts, ideas and gifts!

Choir has resumed! They rehearse each Sunday at 8:45am before service. You are welcome to come and sing with the choir. If you can’t be here every Sunday, just come when you can.

Check out Jane’s article on page 9 for more info.

Listen for new hymns in our worship.

Plan to attend a Recovery Worship service.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE Members are Jane Hanson Wasiluk, Tammy Fuentes, Bill Robbins, Marilyn Nyberg, Nina Allen and Pastor Meta.

LEARNING COMMITTEE NOTES There will be some changes this Fall for the Learning Committee tasks. Sunday morning Learning and Sharing will now be held in the Banquet Room near the South End. The first Sunday of each month will be Forums: October 5th is on the Capital Campaign, November 2 will be Renee James, Principal of Lyndale School, and December 7th will be on Parish Nurses. “ Sunday School” is now on Wednesdays at 5:30pm and is called HOLY MOLY STORY TIME. Pastor Meta will host the first couple Wednesdays and then we will use our normal teacher rotation. If you are interested and available to “host” a Wednesday (or two) talk to either Pastor Meta or Deana to get on the schedule. Nursery volunteers are always welcome … during September there haven’t been many Sundays with kids in the nursery but we never know when that changes. We schedule Nursery volunteers and if no kiddies are there 20 minutes into the service, come to worship! The third Sunday of the month (September—May) is Confirmation “Class” … there were 15 attending the first “Class”. There is a competition between The Whippersnappers (those born post 1950) and the team of pre 1950 (which has no name as of this typing). “Class” starts at 11:30 and soup and bread is served at 12:20 … come and join in! If you are interested in being a part of this committee, talk to Stan Due. The Learning Committee is Stan Due, Chair; Joan Konigson, Peggy Stevenson, LuAnn Giles, and Deana Miller.

The Prayer Angel Corner—Prayers for the month of October

Be an Angel. Light a candle. Say a prayer. New prayers for our Prayer Angels to use in October

Ages Birth—2 Years: Loving God, thank you for hearing my prayer. Today I pray for ___ that he/she will have parents graced with patient love as they face the huge responsibility of caring for and nurturing ____, and as they go through changes in their own relationship. In Jesus’ name, amen. Ages 3-5 Years: Loving God, thank you for hearing my prayer. Today I pray for ______ that he/she will enjoy learn-ing something new today that will engage his/her mental development and creativity. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Kindergarten—Grade 2: Loving God, thank you for hearing my prayer. Today I pray for ____ that he/she will find enjoyment in various activities, but not be overscheduled. Help this family find balance between outside opportunities and precious family time—and time to “just be a kid.” In Jesus’ name, amen.

Grades 3-5: Loving God, thank you for hearing my prayer. Today I pray for _____ that he/she will have access to good health care: medical, dental, vision, and mental health care if needed. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Middle School years: Loving God, thank you for hearing my prayer. Today I pray for ____ that he/she will be in-volved with his/her family at home, especially at dinner. Help this family stay connected with shared time and with ears open to hear all that is said, even when it is challenging. In Jesus’ name, amen.

High School Years: Loving God, thank you for hearing my prayer. Today I pray for ____ that he/she will make safe choices with the joys and risks of driving and riding with friends. Please be with him/her and keep him/her grounded in safe practices. In Jesus’ name, amen.

We are grateful to Nancy Rogness and Cherish our Children for these prayers. I invite all of you to use these prayers for children this month.

Sunday School Looks Different This Fall –

Introducing “Holy Moly Story Time” on Wednesdays at 5:30pm

We are using a lively curriculum with video and storybook components. This curriculum is called Holy Moly and it takes a narrative approach to teaching Bible stories just like our narrative lectionary on Sunday mornings.

Very few of our kids are able to attend on Sunday morn-ings this year, so we’re shaking things up and coming to them! We’ll meet before the Lyndale Community Din-ner at 5:30pm. Kids, families, neighbors, volunteers, and

curious bystanders are welcome. If you think you’d like to be involved in this new experiment, come and see. Pastor Meta is leading the first few sessions and we’ll figure it out together. Join us!

Team Zion is proud to announce that we

exceeded our goals at the MN Recovery Walk

last month! Thank you for helping us raise

more than $1500 for the MN Recovery

Connection. Walkers included: Pastor Meta

and her daughters in the double stroller, Julie

Hurbanis (from St. John’s), Stan Due, Gary

Larsen, Chris Due, Dennis Werneke, Kirsten

Anderson and Jenny Hawley. Deana & Santa

Dan were at the Recovery Worship informa-

tion booth and talked to HUNDREDS of peo-

ple. What a fun way to connect with the

wider recovery community!

Our first confirmation class on September 21 was a lot of fun! More than 12 attended for learning, faith sharing, and a light lunch.

Join the conversation every Third Sunday at 11:30am.

Pastor Meta is leading October’s session called “Showing Up”.

As you can see, Zion is a busy building! Please schedule meetings

and activities in advance so everyone has the space they need.

If your group decides not to meet, please call to cancel so others

can use the space. Thank you.

PRAYER & DISCERNMENT IN OCTOBER:

Duty & Joy

This month’s financial focus is on the Capital Appeal projects, but our regular stewardship season is coming up in November.

As we prepare and plan for funding ministry and mission in 2015, consider your call to duty and your call to joy.

How do you express your faith as an act of duty? What needs getting done? What responsibilities drive your generosity?

How do you express your faith as an act of joy? What about sharing your gifts is life-giving, renewing, and energizing?

QUILT SUNDAY... Start your Christmas shopping early! You can buy quilts from Zion’s Quilters for your family and friends. On Sunday, October 12th, the pews will be draped with quilts of all colors and sizes. Each will have a piece of paper pinned on it with the size and the cost. Money received goes back into the purchase of supplies for making quilts that are shared with homeless shelters, crisis nurseries, St. Joseph’s Home, Catholic Charities, Marie Sandvik, and others. You can help support their beautiful work by buying a quilt to keep or share!
