The chamber also plans to ad-vertise for a part-time administra-tive assistant to help carry out both chamber and economic development goals, helping to improve overall operations and increase value for its members. Addi-tionally, the chamber will be hiring a short-term, project-based intern to help with information technology and graphic design.

property tax renewal for school op-erations narrowly passed by a 52-48 percent margin.

Since the beginning of the Zach-ary Community School System, the community has consistently sup-ported higher taxes for building campuses, teacher salaries, and op-erations by wide margins. Despite little opposition, the tax renewal passed by a little more than 100 votes, causing some supporters of the Zachary schools to rethink how well the district communicates with the public concerning fiscal policy.

Brian Spillman, a Zachary resi-dent for the past eight years, was re-cently admitted to Ochsner in New Orleans in order to start the process for a heart transplant. Brian has been a diabetic since he was eight years old. Now, at age 39, heart dis-ease caused by his diabetes has pro-gressed to the point that a transplant has been recommended.

Brian is married to Amy Spillman and has two teenaged boys, both of whom attend Zachary schools. A state championship coach and teacher, Brian has had to stop work-ing due to his health condition.

Family and friends are rallying around the Spillmans to help them fundraise for the upcoming medical bills. A raffle has been organized for a Remington.308 rifle with scope. Tickets are $2 each and the raffle will be held on January 27, 2013. Raffle tickets are presently being sold at Davis Gun and Pawn in Baker and Dry’s Pharmacy in Zach-ary. All proceeds will go to Brian’s medical and travel expenses.

The family also has an account set up at Chase bank and donations

may be made at any Zachary or Ba-ton Rouge branch.

“God has blessed with an awe-some group of family and friends and a loving church family that has been there with us so far. We would appreciate any help … and please re-member our family in your prayers,” said Amy Spillman.

residence, and a phone number of people or families who might benefit from this service using the applica-tion form at this link: http://sfm.dps.louisiana.gov/doc/savealife/smoke_alarm_grant_app.pdf

Installation of smoke-detectors will begin after the holidays, once the need has been determined. For more information, call Ronald Hives at the ZFD at 225-654-0026.

sharon phenald#5by Daniel Duggan

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they inspire sweeping change in a community or touch hundreds of lives through their service. But just as often, a hero quietly helps a single individ-ual, perhaps, as in Sharon Phenald’s case, making a life-changing deci-sion ultimately affecting the course of her life as well as the life of the child who entered her life in an un-common way.

Almost 15 years ago at age 48, Sharon Phenald (or Aunt Shine as her family members affection-ately call her) was pretty much set in her ways. She enjoyed her life, had great friends, was single with a grown son, and enjoyed her career working in the administrative side of the home health industry. Then she received a call from the wom-en’s prison from one of her nieces.

“Aunt Shine, I am in trouble. I am in prison for drugs, and I am pregnant. I don’t know what to do,” Sharon remembers her niece saying.

Sharon knew that her niece was a drug addict who wasn’t likely to get her life together, but she helped her get out of prison, pleading with her to take care of herself for the sake of the baby. It wasn’t long before her niece disappeared into the drug cul-ture for several more months before being arrested again.

Once again, Sharon received a phone call from her niece at the women’s prison.

“Aunt Shine, I am going to have

this baby soon; and I need you to take her till I get out,” her niece im-plored.

Sharon wanted to help her niece, but finances were tight and she real-ly couldn’t afford a baby at the time. It would just be too much.

That night as Sharon lay in bed,

she prayed about what she should do. “Just have faith,” is what Sharon recalled feeling God saying to her. “Have faith.”

As the days before the birth of the baby passed, Sharon remembers feeling a heavy burden on her heart, still unsure what to do. She relied on her faith to guide her through the dark moments as she stayed in and out of communication with her niece during the last few weeks of the pregnancy.

Finally, the day arrived. Sharon remembered: “I received a phone call from my niece saying that she was in labor, in custody, and that if no one came to get the baby then the infant would be separated from her and sent to an institution or or-phanage where prisoners’ babies go

because no one else in her family would help with the baby.”

At that moment a total peace passed over Sharon; she knew what she had to do. On the way out the door, she told a few of her friends, “I am going to bring the baby home with me!”

When Sharon arrived at the hos-pital, her niece had just given birth to a baby girl. Sharon followed the nurse back to her niece’s room, and as soon as she laid eyes on her, the

doubts and worries that had plagued her for the last few weeks drained away completely.

Sharon’s niece asked her if it was all right that she had already named the baby. Being new to this type of situation, Sharon asked, “Of course; what did you name her?”

“Her name is Faith. Faith Eliza-beth Varnado,” said her niece as she was taken back into custody.

Some 48 hours later, Sharon Phe-nald went home with Faith to find a fully outfitted nursery waiting for them thanks to the wonderful efforts of some friends and family she had notified on the way to the hospital. Faith, as she has been known her whole life, is now a very happy, and very fortunate, teenager.

“I am thankful and terribly blessed to be where I am today. I always think about how my life changed forever because of one car-ing, unselfish, and loving woman–Sharon Phenald,” said Faith.

Faith is an honor student at Northwestern Middle School; she loves animals and wants to be a vet-erinarian. She nominated her mom, Sharon Phenald, not only as her per-sonal hero but also as an example of the countless loving “parents” in the community who have decided to love and raise “adopted” children.

Faith has very little communica-tion with her biological parents, and she is perfectly happy with that be-cause, as she says, she knows who her real momma is…Sharon Phen-ald.

The Zachary Fire Department was able to present a check for $2,033.87 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation–Baton Rouge affiliate last Friday af-ternoon. The fire department raised funds via its Pink Helmet Campaign for which 52 local businesses pur-chased pink regulation helmets to be worn by firefighters at all calls dur-ing the month of October. Captain Gordon Lipscomb, who suggested the fundraiser, said their initial goal was to sell 22 helmets, a number that they far surpassed.

The pink helmets were returned to the businesses in November to be displayed until next year when they will have to “buy back” the helmets with an additional donation.

Pictured are (l to r) Captain Ronald Hives, Firefighter Jordan Munn, Firefighter Ste-phen Hunt, Chief of Operations Glenn Triche, Firefighter David Hughes, Janet Dewey-Kollen, Susan G. Komen-Baton Rouge affiliate, Firefighter Stephen Jones (standing behind Dewey-Kollen, Captain Chris Young, Tonya Dixon, Susan G. Komen-Baton Rouge affiliate, Captain Gordon Lipscomb and Deputy Chief David Armand.

This year, the cost of purchasing the helmets was part of the $300 do-nation. Assuming the same number of donors next year, the contribution to Susan G. Komen should be quite a bit larger.

Upon accepting the check, Ja-net Dewey-Kollen with the Susan G.Komen Baton Rouge affiliate, which serves 10 parishes, explained the check will enable the organiza-tion, for instance, to provide approx-imately 20 mammograms, which cost $100 to conduct. In this way, they can offer under-served women the best chance at beating breast can-cer–early detection.

“I can’t say how much we appre-ciate it,” said Dewey-Kollen upon receiving the check.

The ZHS Lady Broncos soccer team placed in the Gulfport Showcase Tournament during the weekend of November 30. The team placed third out of 13 teams from Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.

The fog was heavy, but the inclement weather did not stop the Lady Broncos from demonstrating teamwork and drive. Under Coach Tanner’s di-rection, the girls had been practicing daily, and it paid off at the tournament.

The team played three games: Zachary vs. St. Martin (6-1), Zachary vs. Pass Christian (4-5) and Zachary vs. Picayune (2-1).

Cardiovascular Institute of the South Reaccredited

Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) nuclear laboratories have been granted reaccreditation for three years by the Intersocietal Accredita-tion Commission (IAC), which ac-knowledges the facility’s commitment to high-quality patient care and quality diagnostic testing.

To earn this accreditation, CIS’s 10 nuclear laboratories, including the one in Zachary, underwent rigorous ex-aminations of operational and techni-cal components by a panel of experts. The IAC only grants accreditation to facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care in compliance with national standards through a compre-hensive application process and de-tailed case study review.

Nuclear cardiology procedures are used to assess both cardiac function and blood flow to the heart muscle. By using nuclear procedures, physicians are able to detect the presence of car-diovascular disease and may also dis-cover important information regarding the potential occurrence of future heart attacks.

With a team of nearly 500 dedicat-ed team members, CIS serves commu-nities throughout Louisiana, as well as national and international patients, at its 13 clinics. CIS consistently posi-tions itself at the forefront of technol-ogy by providing the most up-to-date technology coupled with compassion-ate care. This mission has guided the institute for more than 29 years of ser-vice to south Louisiana. For more in-formation about CIS, call 1-800-425-2565 or visit www.cardio.com.
