It is a time for us to reflect as Christians on the gift the Lord Jesus gave all of us who believe in Him. It is very easy for us to neglect the importance and meaning of this holiday, and become absorbed with the commercial aspects of candy, bunnies, and eggs. Don’t misunderstand my intent, as a father of four young children, there is nothing wrong with the Easter Bunny and celebration, but I believe that it is important to understand the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as central to the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, our Christian faith would be just wishful thinking, no better than hu- man philosophies and speculative religions. In fact, the noted seventeenth-century philosopher John Locke, some of whose ideas were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “Our Savior’s resurrection is truly of great importance in Christianity, so great that His being or not being the Messiah stands or falls with it.” More so than Christmas or any other holiday, Easter is what Christianity is all about. Without the resurrection there is no hope. With it, even death has no sting. Jesus spoke to his disciples about His sufferings and death: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again” (Mark 8:31). Paul knew that without the resurrection our salvation could not have been possible (1 Corinthi- ans 15). He was also convinced a person couldn’t be saved without believing in the resurrection of Jesus: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is important to remember that Paul, the other apostles, and every leader in the early church continually proclaimed Christ’s resurrection as the culmination of His ministry. Those men were so captivated by the significance of the resurrection that they could not help but preach it. And that should be our attitude today. The good news of Christ’s birth is only trumped by the great news of his death, burial and resurrection. This Holy Week, take some extra time to reflect on the greatest gift God ever gave us, His son, and through Him eternal life. Happy EasterThis Sunday is Easter Sunday. It is a time for us

to reflect as Christians on the gift the Lord Jesus gave all of us who believe in Him.

Without the resurrection, our Christian faith would be just wishful thinking, no better than hu-man philosophies and speculative religions. In fact, the noted seventeenth-century philosopher John Locke, some of whose ideas were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “Our Savior’s resurrection is truly of great importance in Christianity, so great that His being or not being the Messiah stands or falls with it.”

More so than Christmas or any other holiday, Easter is what Christianity is all about. Without the resurrection there is no hope. With it, even death has no sting. Jesus spoke to his disciples about His sufferings and death: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the

chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again” (Mark 8:31). Paul knew that without the resurrection our salvation could not have been possible (1 Corinthi-

In Our SchoolsMr. Glynn Goes to Washington

As a history teacher I know that seminal moments ostensibly change the world in ways that often times cannot be predicted. Last month I got to be part of one of those seminal mo-ments. My name is Emmitt Glynn, III and I am an N.B.C.T. who teaches high school in Zachary, Louisiana at the Zachary Career and Techni-cal Center. I was recently invited by the National Board to participate in a Congressional panel in Washing-ton D.C. where 13 other N.B.C.T.’s and I discussed how using the medi-cal model of board certification could better prepare teachers for the class-room with members of Congress who are currently board certified doctors and other national educational poli-cymakers. I then had the opportunity to attend the Teaching & Learning 2014 Conference. I left Washing-ton D.C. positively changed and in-spired from my trip learning valuable knowledge about the craft of teach-ing from my colleagues at the confer-ence and helping to make our profes-sion stronger through contributing to the Congressional panel event. I once asked a fellow historian what the future held for him and he sim-ply replied “I study the past, not the future” and although I adhere to the same credo I believe our Congressio-nal meeting and the conference were both seminal moments for the teach-ing profession.

Zachary Police to Join DEA for National Prescription Drug Take-back DayFrom 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday,

April 26, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana will join the Zachary Police Department and Drug Enforce-ment Administration (DEA) officials for the eighth National Prescription Drug Take-back Day. State and local law enforcement partners will staff collection events across the nation to help the public safely rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, un-used or unwanted prescription drugs.

In Zachary, the public can bring unused prescription medication to police department headquarters, 4510 Main Street, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on April 26. Popular country music station WYNK-FM will host a radio remote event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the same location to provide entertainment and giveaways to those

who come by to drop off their medi-cations.

Americans participating in DEA’s seven previous Take-back Days have turned in more than 3.4 million pounds—more than 1,700 tons—of expired or unwanted prescription drugs, most recently at more than 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its law enforcement partners last Oc-tober. Blue Cross has participated since 2011, providing promotional support and volunteers at a major Ba-ton Rouge drop-off site. Last April, Blue Cross and QVL Pharmacy vol-unteers there took in more than 85 pounds of unwanted or expired pre-scription drugs.

National Prescription Drug Take-back Day provides a venue for the public to dispose of unwanted and

unused prescription drugs safely and in an environmentally friendly way. It also addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, mis-use and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as is the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are ob-tained from family and friends, often from their home medicine cabinets. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Bayou Pawn on Main Street is a New Concept in Pawn BrokerageBy James Ronald skains

“The old image of pawn shops has certainly been upgraded by the pawn broker reality TV shows,” Jeffery Knight, manager of Bayou Pawn in Zachary, told the Zachary POST. “We keep our store clean and brightly lit as you would any retail store.”

“From day one, our attitude has been to be a service to the people who come through our doors. Our ideal customer is one who comes in with an item of value, we make him a fair loan on the item and within 30-90 days he has paid off the loan and takes his item of value home. Keeping someone’s item of value is a last legal resort for us, and hap-pens only after we give people re-peated opportunities to redeem their item of value.”

Bayou Pawn & Jewelry 3 is owned by Kerry Rainey who also owns two other pawn brokerages in South Louisiana, located in Ham-mond and Walker. Rainey has been in the pawn brokerage business for 26 years. The business arrangement that Rainey has with his manager of the Walker store, Eric Myers is the same as the one with Knight; one day both managers, after a specific

tenure as manager, will have the op-portunity to buy the store.

“This is a good arrangement be-cause I started in the business not knowing anything about pawn bro-kerage business,’’ Knight acknowl-edged. “When I first applied for the job, Kerry told me that it was fine that I did not have any experience in the pawn brokerage business be-cause he wanted to train me the way he wanted business to be done.”

“Kerry’s number one principle was to be honest with everyone, and treat customers with respect. We have a lot of repeat customers be-cause they know that we will treat them fairly, with respect and give them every opportunity to redeem their collateral. We want to be peo-ple’s short term solution for their fi-nancial problems.”

One of Bayou Pawn & Jewelry 3 newspaper advertisements says: “Get a Short-term Collateral Loan to hold you over until Tax Returns.” Bayou Pawn takes an assortment of collateral for short term loans, tools, electronics (less than 6 years old), guns, jewelry, lawn equipment and other items of value.

“Since the first day we opened here in Zachary five years ago, guns have been our number one item,” Knight, a native of Central pointed out. “We sell a lot of guns, both new and used and ammo of all calibers.”

“One of the first things that Kerry did after I went to work with him was to send me to a Gemologist School to learn how to grade diamonds. I’ve actually got a certificate as a Gem-ologist, of which I’m proud. This al-lows me to give a more accurate val-ue of diamond jewelry to potential customers. By the same token, this training helps me ascertain the real thing from the fakes and establish a good loan to value ratio.”

The life journey for Knight to be-come a Gemologist and pawn broker had several twists and turns. Right after graduating from Central high school, Knight joined the Army.

“My first desire then, and even now, is to fly helicopters,’’ Knight explained. “I wasn’t able to get into flight school so I became a flight mechanic with the responsibil-ity to keep the Chinook Helicopter to which I was assigned clean and flight worthy at a moments notice. I enjoyed my job.”

“While I was stationed in Germa-ny, my Chinook was part of a presi-

dential operation when President Bush came to Europe. A lot of the presidential press corps rode with us. President Bush’s daughter actu-ally flew on my Chinook when he was visiting London.”

“I was in the Army for 8 years and about half way through, I got a little bored and applied for Special Forces not thinking that I really had a chance to be accepted. However, I was accepted and went through several schools, including the Sur-vival Evasion Resistance Escape School for flight crew members before being assigned to the 160th SOAR Unit. I did 2 tours of duty in Afghanistan in similar situations to missions you see in the movie “Lone Survivor.”

“After getting out of the Army, I went to civilian helicopter train-ing school,’’ Knight, who recently earned his 32nd Degree Mason lev-el related. “Flying is the love of my life, but young pilots have to get in so many hours of flight time before they begin making decent money, that I couldn’t wait that long after just getting out of the Army.”

Knight, now age 36 and a pawn broker went to work for his father who owned the former Southern Greens Company on Plank Road that is now occupied by the 4 Sis-ters Antique Mall. Southern Greens was bought out by the TORO Com-pany and after a time as a consultant

for TORO Company, Knight was in need of a job.

“That was the time frame in which my friend since the 6th grade, Eric Myers introduced me to the pawn brokerage business and Kerry Rainey,” Knight continued as he elaborated on his introduction to the pawn brokerage business. “I’ve learned a lot about the business. It never gets old, because you never know who or what is going to walk through your front door.”

“We are a high end brokerage shop that will loan out high dol-lars on collateral of value,” Knight

noted. “We will also buy out-right certain items that people just want to sell and not use as collateral for a loan. Each day we are required to turn in a list of all items we buy outright and those that we take in as collateral. We have to hold any item that we buy for 30 days by law be-fore we can sell it.”

Bayou Pawn & Jewelry 3 is open six days a week. Their hours are convenient for all line of customers: Monday – Friday 8:30 A.M till 5:30 PM and on Saturday from 9 AM till 3 PM.
