Dear Friends,

YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee continues to move our mission forward. In the midst of unprecedented collective obstacles, we have accelerated our work to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Thanks to the generous support of our friends and donors, we have been able to keep our clients and staff safe and healthy at the Weaver Domestic Violence Center during these challenging times. We are also proud to say that even at the height of the crisis, we were able to keep the doors open and client intakes going without a pause in service.

As you read this letter, victims of domestic violence no longer have to make that difficult choice of leaving a four-legged family member behind or coming into shelter. Thanks to compassionate donors, we have officially expanded our domestic violence services programs to include a state-of-the-art pet shelter. Both people and pets are now welcome at Abbie’s Safe Home on the campus of the Weaver Center. This effort took vision, dedication, years of planning, research, and hard work on the part of both our board and staff. We are thrilled to see it come to life.

As we found ourselves in a year where our traditional event-based fundraising efforts were stymied, we were blessed with a sizable and humbling donation from MacKenzie Scott. Her team meticulously selected a handful of organizations nationwide to receive unrestricted funds, and we are thrilled that they recognized our long-standing history of fiduciary strength and responsibility. 2020 and 2021 have served as reminders that while we hope to celebrate with our community in-person, we must continue to evolve our development practices more generally.

Our work outside of the Weaver Center also evolved and flourished. The Family Learning Center served more clients than ever, as students took advantage of our classes from home. The FLC continues to offer virtual education classes and in-person HiSET testing so adults can earn their high school equivalency diplomas and move on and up in their careers or postsecondary education. Our Career Services and Dress for Success programs offer that additional assistance for those on the path to self-sufficiency and success. We are so proud of how The FLC and DFS pivoted in a time of change and uncertainty when our clients needed us most.

Our youth services programs are making an even bigger impact than usual, as our students are facing increasingly challenging times both at school and at home. Girls, Inc. continues to inspire our girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Thanks to our clubs continuing their programming virtually and in-person, the young men in our AMEND Together program understand what it means to be a healthy man and respect women and girls. There’s never been a more critical time for young people to have extra support, and we know AMEND and Girls, Inc. are more vital than ever.

While our community is benefiting from an increased awareness of the issues that threaten to divide us, we provide a safe space for these tough conversations and look towards healing. We’ve expanded our social justice programming to include a 21 Day Challenge, supplementing the monthly Stand Against Racism lunch and learn series and community rally. We’ve also seen success in our legislative advocacy work, initiating two new laws to aid victims of domestic violence. Beginning on January 1, 2022, all licensed cosmetologists, barbers, manicurists, etc., in Tennessee will be required to take a domestic violence education course. Our Shear Haven initiative is in place to help the 70,000+ licensees comply. And on July 1, a new state law enabling domestic violence survivors to escape their abusers - and their leases - took effect. This long-standing problem for victims was resolved thanks, in great part, to YWCA reaching out to our elected officials and asking for change.

Thank you for standing with the YWCA this past year. The women, children, and families we serve need your support, and we are truly grateful for it.

Sincerely,

Sharon K. RobersonPresident & CEO

WHAT WE DOYWCA programs serve the needs of women, children, and families living in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. We provide the tools needed to be safe, independent, and successful in work and life while promoting dignity and equality for all. At its heart, YWCA is a social justice organization. Social justice is embedded into the work we do internally as an organization and externally in the community with our clients and partner organizations. We advocate on behalf of our clients and educate the community on how we can work together to eliminate racism and empower women.

YWCA’s services are trauma-informed, and we focus on incorporating this knowledge to help children who’ve faced adverse childhood experiences. In addition to providing a place of safety and healing for adults, children, and pets who are victims of domestic violence, we invest directly in the lives of girls and boys to prevent gender violence and promote healthy masculinity, respect, and tolerance. Knowing that education is the foundation for success, YWCA also operates one of the region’s largest and most successful adult education and career services programs. Our programs and services are provided free of charge.

YWCA offers more than safety. We help break the cycle of abuse by offering a continuum of services, including the 24-hour Crisis & Support Helpline and Textline, the 65-bed Weaver Domestic Violence Center, case management, adult and children’s counseling, shelter and community based support groups, community education, transitional housing, and Re-New at the YWCA.

Re-New was founded in 2010 to help women who are leaving the Weaver Center jump-start their lives. The volunteer-run program furnishes and decorates the homes of survivors leaving the shelter.

Last year, YWCA provided more than 13,250 nights of safety to adults and children at the Weaver Center. Crisis counselors responded to more than 4,700 calls and texts to the crisis lines.

As the COVID-19 pandemic swept through Tennessee, YWCA saw a spike in calls to the crisis phone and text lines. The doors to the Weaver Center never closed during this challenging time.

Going to the YWCA ended up being the very best

thing that happened to me. I remember feeling

safe. I remember sleeping very well. The best I’ve

slept in a long time. I didn’t wake up fearful at

all, and I didn’t go to sleep fearful. And that was

huge. I had lived for 6 years waking up and going

to sleep in fear.

The region’s largest emergency pet shelter for victims of domestic violence opened on the grounds of the Weaver Domestic Violence Center on August 24, 2021. Abbie’s Safe Home is a critical community resource that removes a tremendous barrier for victims of domestic violence in their efforts to seek safety. Statistics show that half of all victims of abuse delay leaving because they won’t leave their pets behind. Years of planning and community support culminated into this state-of-the-art, 800 square foot facility that includes high quality steel kennels, an isolation room, and two fenced-in play yards. Abbie’s Safe Home is named for the late mother of YWCA board member and volunteer Gail Alexander. The new pet shelter can house up to eight dogs and six cats at a time and will allow families to stay together and heal together.

Girls Inc. at YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through life-changing programs and experiences that help them navigate gender, economic, and social barriers. The thoughtful combination of PEOPLE, ENVIRONMENT, and PROGRAMMING provide an immersive and highly supportive experience for the girls, and the focus on the WHOLE GIRL provides a structure of growth and development to help girls achieve and thrive. Last year, YWCA served more than 320 girls in the Girls Inc. program.

Both Girls Inc. and AMEND Together offered youth programming virtually to keep children and staff safe during the pandemic. They have returned to more than two dozen area schools and sites for in-person programming in the 2021-22 school year.

GIRLS INC.

Being in a room of girls supporting each

the ability to experience. Having someone

commitment speak for itself.

AMEND Together is YWCA’s community-based primary prevention program dedicated to ending violence against women and girls by engaging men and boys to challenge a culture that supports violence, cultivate healthy masculinity, and change the future for women and girls. Last year, AMEND Together expanded into a national program with seven YWCA affiliates across five different states incorporating the program into their work. Locally, nearly 200 boys took part in AMEND Together programming.

Dress for Success Nashville transitions women to self-sufficiency by providing professional clothing, a network of support, and career development tools. Dress for Success equips women with more than just the clothes they need to find a job. It gives them confidence to succeed. Last year, our program implemented changes to keep staff and clients safe so we could continue to offer virtual and in-person suitings to women entering or re-entering the workforce.

We suited more than 50 women during this time. YWCA also provided curbside, contact-free, donation drop-off appointments for our supporters so we could continue to offer quality merchandise to the women we serve.

YWCA’s Family Learning Center offers high-quality, culturally sensitive, comprehensive programming to help families break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and illiteracy. The FLC’s free adult education program boasts 25 percent of all HiSET (formerly GED) graduates from the Nashville region. Our teachers and tutors moved instruction online after the pandemic forced in-person classes to be suspended.

Students have welcomed this new and convenient way to learn, and enrollment continues to climb. Last year, nearly 340 adults were served in the FLC, with 17 earning their High School Equivalency Diploma. YWCA’s FLC offers a career services program to support our adult learners.

FAMILY LEARNING CENTER & CAREER SERVICES

Despite dropping out of school at age 17, Ialways dreamed of getting my high schooldiploma. I was a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, and when I wanted to begin working again, itwas difficult to move forward in my career due tomy lack of education. I worked so hard to provemyself at my current job. When I saw the YWCAoffered an opportunity to complete my dreamby getting my high school diploma, I reachedout to begin. Thanks to them, many doors havebeen opened for me and I am looking forward tocontinuing my studies in business management.

As the oldest and largest multi-racial women’s organization in the world, YWCA has taken a leadership role in civil and human rights issues for more than a century. YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee is actively engaged in advocacy that reduces violence against women and girls, promotes gender equity and racial justice. We are fortunate to have an active and engaged Advocacy Committee.

During the 112th General Assembly session in 2021, YWCA was instrumental in having two pieces of legislation passed that will directly impact the lives of domestic violence victims. The DV Lease Law will allow victims to terminate their leases early if they are fleeing an abusive partner. The Shear Haven - Domestic Violence Awareness training for beauty professionals will require that all licensed cosmetologists, students, barbers, manicurists, etc. in Tennessee be trained on the signs of domestic violence and how to help. Thanks to a partnership with Barbicide, our Shear Haven training has already helped more than 26,000 stylists in 99 different countries learn about domestic violence.

YWCA hosts a monthly Stand Against Racism Lunch & Learn and the annual Stand Community Rally. The 21 Day Challenge campaign was launched in 2020 to further engage those interested in learning more about systemic racism and how they can help make a difference in their communities. More than 6,000 individuals took part in these efforts last year.

As an individual committed to socialjustice, I stand with YWCA against racismand discriminationof any kind. I will commit to a lifetimeof promoting peace, justice, freedom, anddignity for all people in my community andin the world.

Our work is powered by volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without the time, energy, and talents of hundreds of volunteers. They take on many tasks, from keeping our shelter looking beautiful to tutoring and mentoring our students. They also educate lawmakers on issues that impact our clients, their families, and our communities. Last year in the midst of the pandemic, nearly 140 volunteers donated over 4,000 hours to our Domestic Violence Services, Family Learning Center, Dress for Success, AMEND Together, Girls Inc. and Advocacy and Social Justice programs. Our volunteers are essential in allowing YWCA programs to thrive, advancing our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

THE 29TH ANNUAL ACADEMY FOR WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT

The Academy for Women of Achievement(AWA) was launched locally in 1992 by YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee to increase community awareness and appreciation of the diverse contributions of women in the workforce and in the community. This year’s event theme is ‘She Persisted,’ which honors the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Our new and former inductees into the AWA have shown up in their communities and proved that their persistence is critical in fighting for racial, gender, and religious equality. The 2020 recipients joined 171 other women who hold this distinctive honor.
