Health and Social Care SectorHealth and Social Care is a rewarding and challenging industry which continually evolves and develops in line with the latest government initiatives. Learners with an interest in Health and Social Care can study and specialise to suit their individual interests. ABC has qualifications in Adult Care, Childcare and Early Years, Counselling, Health and Fitness and Complementary Therapies, as well as Youth and Community and Working with Vulnerable Young People which feature here.

About UsEstablished in 1998, ABC Awards (ABC) is the result of combining more than 180 years of regional examination and assessment practices into one national Awarding Organisation. As a registered charity we are continuing the tradition of our founding organisations who were established by the sector to deliver useful and practical qualifications whilst off ering exceptional support and ABC is proud to still be “owned” by the sector and working for the sector.

ABC off ers an outstanding range of vocational qualifications which reflect the skills that employers and centres look for in learners and employees. At ABC, we recognise the importance of continuing to off er not only a wide range and breadth of qualifications, but just as significantly, excellent customer support.

An Experienced and Knowledgeable TeamOur friendly and responsive approach to customers means all our centres have access to a dedicated Qualification Administrator as well as unlimited access to a Business Development Manager who can answer any queries or concerns you might have. Our Moderators are all subject specialists and are chosen by us for their experience, knowledge and ability to support centres to deliver ABC’s qualifications successfully.

A Wide Range of QualificationsOur portfolio of more than 600 Ofqual regulated qualifications covers 14 sectors with qualifications to suit all ages and abilities. We have designed all ABC qualifications with the support of relevant stakeholders to make sure that they meet the needs of the current industries across the UK. This means that the qualifications are designed to give learners the skills needed to find employment, progress within education or enhance their skills in their current job role. We have more than 1200 centres with many tens of thousands of certificates being issued each year.

ABC Awards off ers a superb range of Youth Work qualifications for those with an interest in working with young people in the community. These range from an introduction at Level 1 through to the more advanced qualifications at Levels 2 & 3 which can assist people already in a job with their responsibilities. For those who are professionally qualified, Level 3 & 4 qualifications in Working with Vulnerable Young People can provide additional support. They are appropriate for those looking to work in the private, public or voluntary and community sector.

Level 2 Award and Certificate in Working with Young PeopleThese qualifications have been specifically designed for those working in the voluntary and community sector for anyone working directly or indirectly with young people. They aim to enable learners to perform their existing paid or volunteer roles better and provide a stepping stone for progression to other qualifications which are designed for specific job roles, if this is appropriate.

ABC has developed these qualifications with NCVYS following the success of the Progress project, managed by NCVYS in 2010-2011, which delivered over 27,000 accredited QCF units to approximately

8000 learners working with young people across the voluntary and community sector. The Level 2 Working with Young People was designed to meet needs identified in feedback from this project and from further consultation with the sector.

These are diff erent to the Level 2 Youth Work, which are competence qualifications aimed at those who perform the specific role of Assistant Youth Support Worker. These new qualifications are not competence qualifications. They do not appear in Apprenticeship Frameworks but provide opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and understanding.


Level 1 Certificate in an Introduction to Youth Work

This qualification was developed with The Prince’s Trust and its partners and provides the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of the scope of the youth work sector exploring :

• issues that aff ect young people• the role of youth work in addressing

these• the diff erent youth work settings in

which the work takes place

There are no specific academic or experiential requirements, however, learners must be 16+ and have an interest in developing their interpersonal skills and have an interest in working with young people in a paid or voluntary capacity.

As an employee in the youth work sector, you may find yourself helping to run arts-based activities, community/environmental projects, residential activities, outdoor education and sporting activities. You may also be involved in identifying and pursuing sources of funding for projects to improve services and/or resources for young people; drawing up business plans; writing reports and making formal presentations to funding bodies.

Our aim is to contribute towards meeting the recruitment and retention issues faced by the sector and to tap into the talents and skills of the wider population to encourage more entrants into the Youth Work sector.

Our objectives are to:

• Provide the basis for developing a wide range of transferable skills

• Provide clear pathways for career progression within youth work

Youth Work QualificationsABC’s qualifications provide a route of entry into the Youth Work sector as well as off ering a range of opportunities to progress.

Level 3 Award, Certificate & Diploma in Youth Work Practice

The Level 3 qualifications in Youth Work Practice aim to support the knowledge, understanding and skills required to competently fulfil the role of Youth Support Worker.

These qualifications are designed for those who have completed full-time education up to the age of 16 years and who are already working in a Youth Work environment (public, voluntary or private sector, paid or unpaid) in a supportive role and who are supervised.

The Level 3 Diploma is included in the Youth Work Apprenticeship Framework.

Level 2 Award & Certificate in Youth Work Practice

The Level 2 qualifications are designed for those who are already working in a Youth Work environment in an assisting or supportive role and who are supervised. They aim to support the skills and knowledge needed to become a competent Assistant Support Youth Worker.

The Award is for learners who are 14+ and the Certificate for those who are 16+, who have limited experience of youth work and want an access route to a qualification.

The Level 2 Certificate is included in the Youth Work Apprenticeship Framework.

“The purpose of youth work is to facilitate and support young people’s growth through dependence to interdependence, by encouraging their personal and social development and enabling them to have a voice, influence and place in their communities and society”*. Youth Workers play an important role in this process by supporting young people in their personal, social and educational development, normally as part of a wider team delivering or organising formal and informal education opportunities in a variety of settings.


Vulnerable Young People QualificationsDesigned and developed for those working with vulnerable young people, ABC’s qualifications recognise the unique skills needed within this workforce.

These qualifications are applicable to those working across a range of sectors including youth work, social care, family workers and play work to enable greater transferability of skills.

The children and young people’s workforce makes up approximately 10% of the labour market in England*. A growing part of the children and young people’s workforce is playing an increasing role in the delivery of all services to children and young people, particularly those for the most vulnerable children, young people and families.

It is therefore vital that the workforce is able to demonstrate the right qualities and gain the appropriate qualifications in order to support children and young people to have the best start in life and provide them with a safe and secure environment.

Level 3 & 4 Awards & Certificates in Working with Vulnerable Young PeopleThese qualifications can provide a stepping stone into higher education for people with few or no qualifications but who have considerable experience of working with young people in a paid or voluntary capacity. They may also be used to develop learners who are professionally qualified and competent in their job role, but who need additional support in the area of working with vulnerable young people.

They aim to :

• encourage progression by assisting in the development of knowledge, understanding and skills that learners will need to access further or higher education or to enter employment

• encourage an evaluative approach to personal and professional development

• provide the opportunity for learning and assessment to take place through the integration of practical activities in a work based setting and academic activities

These qualifications are underpinned by the Children’s Workforce Development Council.

Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities & Rights in Health, Social Care, Children & Young People’s Settings

This qualification is designed for learners who are working within the Children and Young People’s Workforce Apprenticeship Framework and Youth Work Apprenticeship Framework (see page 11).

It is a requirement within these Frameworks that learners demonstrate knowledge and understanding of employee rights and responsibilities.

What Next? Learners who successfully complete the Level 1 qualification in youth work could progress to our Level 2 Award or Certificate in Youth Work Practice. You could also explore appropriate Specialised Diplomas at Level 2, or progress onto related Apprenticeships. The Level 2 Certificate also can be used to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to competently fulfil the role of Assistant Youth Support Worker.

Learners who achieve the ABC Level 2 Award in Youth Work Practice may wish to complete additional units to achieve the Level 2 Certificate and then progress onto

appropriate Level 3 programmes as a route to Foundation Degrees and Higher Education.

Once qualified in the Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice you may wish to fulfil the role of Youth Support Worker.

Learners of Level 2 Working with Young People will be able to progress through the Award to the Certificate if they wish. You may also wish to move into specific areas related to those introduced in this qualification and complete further qualifications at level 2 or 3.

Those completing our Level 4 Award / Certificate in Working with Vulnerable Young People can progress onto associated FE/HE programmes or employment in the sector.

ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships require successful completion of a number of components, including a nationally recognised qualification. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills that are applicable to their role, including the underlying skills to be able to operate as an eff ective employee in their sector.

The apprenticeships detailed here have been designed as nationally recognised training programmes that off er an alternative route of entry into their respective sectors. They are appropriate for those looking to work in the private, public or voluntary and community sector.

FeesABC has no hidden fees or charges so the prices you see on our web site are the prices you actually pay. Our costs are inclusive of registration, certification and moderation fees. To assist with cost savings, ABC has frozen all charges for the year 2011-12.
