Choose from rowing, hockey, swimming, tennis, and many other activities. Residents of the University Neighbourhoods Association and UTOWN are encouraged to take part in many of these programs and facilities through discounted rates.

Programming generally occurs through 4 of the University’s recreation facilities: the UBC Aquatic Centre, the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse, and the UBC Tennis Centre.

Junior Competitive rowing team

The Junior Competitive Rowing Program is geared for youth that have met the skill assessment requirements and who are committed to training at a competitive level. Youth are required to attend all practice sessions and are accountable to their team mates in training. This program is designed to meet the outcomes of the Train to Compete/Learn to Compete stage of Canadian Sport for Life’s Long Term Athlete Development Model. This program aims to develop competent rowers who can race in a variety of sculling boats to achieve success at local and national regattas while also allowing athletes the opportunity to continue improving sweeping skills such that they will be well prepared, and well rounded athletes when they try out for University rowing teams in the future. The Competitive Program runs year round and is comprised of both on and off water training. Youth are coached on an individual and group level and are given skill assessments on a regular basis to help with goal setting and achieving performance and fitness results. Prerequisite: Junior Intermediate Rowing team and coach approval, or skill assessment (if transferring from another club).

Junior Development rowing league

The Junior Development Rowing Program is geared for youth wishing to further their rowing with the goal of increasing their rowing skills and building the strength and endurance necessary for the Junior Intermediate Rowing Program. This program will give participants grounding in both sculling and sweeping. Youth are coached and guided based on their personal needs and skill assessments are performed at regular intervals to help youth set goals, achieve results and ultimately achieve success in the sport of rowing. Team building is a key component of this program and youth are encouraged to commit to all practice dates. The Development program runs year round and is comprised of both on and off water training. There is no set time or number of seasons that youth need to participate in the Development team before moving to the Intermediate program. Youth move to the Intermediate program when their skill assessments match the targets required by the Intermediate program. Prerequisite: Junior On-Water Learn to Row, or Fast Track Rowing Camp.

Junior intermeDiate rowing team

The Junior Intermediate Rowing Program is intended for youth who have shown that they have mastered the basic technique of both sculling and sweeping in quads and eights, and are ready to move on to rowing in small boats, and to begin racing. This program aims to develop boat competency in small boats for rowers who are ready to start competing, but who still need a little more experience and practice before being ready for the more demanding practice and racing schedule of the Competitive team. The Intermediate program runs year round and is comprised of both on and off water training. There is no set time or number of seasons that youth need to participate in the Intermediate team before moving to the Competitive program. Youth move to the Competitive program when their skill assessments match the targets required by the Competitive program. Prerequisite: Junior Development Rowing Program and coach approval, or skill assessment (if transferring from another club).

Junior learn to row

This program builds on the skills learned in the Indoor Tank Learn to Row programs. Our instructors will lead you through the basics of rowing, and proper equipment handling. At the end of this program, youth will be invited to join the Junior Development Program, provided the coach feels they have acquired the necessary skills. A fun approach to learning to skate, designed for children with limited or no experience. We will focus on familiarizing your child to the ice and arena environment. Standing alone and balance are the basic essentials for your child to progress in a positive way on the ice. Skates, helmet (with chin strap), pants, jacket and mittens are required. When registering, you will be prompted to select a ‘Level’ (see below) which is closest to your child’s ability. This will give us a starting indication on how to split up the group.

CHilDren’S Diving

An introductory class for babies & their parent or caregiver. Allows babies to experience buoyancy, movement, entries & songs & play in the water (caregiver required).

In Whale, children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers will increase their distance & improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water.

Lessons for children age four months to five years old & their parents or caregivers.

Level 1 Starfish

For toddlers or older babies with a parent of caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying the water through games, songs & active water play (caregiver required).Level 2 Duck

Level 3 Sea TurtleFor preschoolers & their parents. Develops skills in swimming, glides & floating and builds awareness of deep water & safe entries (caregiver required).

Level 4 Sea otterFirst level for new swimmers who can spend 30min without their caregivers. Swimmers work on front & back floats & glides, kicking on front with buoyant object & will be able to swim 1 meter upon completion of this level.

Level 5 SalamanderPreschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats & glides through games & songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.

Level 6 SunfishPreschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Leaning also focuses on good judgment in, on & around the water, & entries and floats in deep water.

Level 7 CrocodilePreschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. endurance is built through increasing distance for front & back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick & try synchro skills in the water.

SwIm KIdS 1 Swimmers develop front and back float, front and back glide, flutter kick (assisted), shallow water entries and exits, and swim 5 metres.

SwIm KIdS 2 Swimmers learn front and back glide with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep-water activities (assisted) and swim 10 metres continuously.

SwIm KIdS 3Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water, and swim 15 metres.

SwIm KIdS 4 Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl (10m), work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dive, introduction to sculling and swim 25 metres continuously.

SwIm KIdS 5Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 metres continuously.

SwIm KIdS 6 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary backstroke (15m), learn dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dive, and swim 75 metres continuously.

SwIm KIdS 7 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary backstroke (25m), learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entry and swim 150 metres continuously.

The UBC Aquatic Centre often sets up giant inflatable obstacle courses in the pool during everybody swim. Check with the front desk for times when these will be available. We also have lots of inflatable toys, inner tubes, basketball nets and floating mats to provide kids with some extra fun.

HoliDay Day CampS

The new facility is being proposed as UBC’s existing aquatic facilities (Empire Pool, built in 1954 and the existing aquatic centre, which began operating in the late 1970s) are reaching the end of their useful lives, with unreliable mechanical systems, worn finishes, inefficient energy systems and outdated layouts. While the structural framing of the indoor aquatic centre is currently in good condition, the roof and building envelope are due for replacement. The proposed new Aquatic Centre is being designed to strike a balance between a high performance competition facility and a neighbourhood leisure facility, and will feature:

• Competition length pool• Recreational lap pool• Leisure pool• Family change rooms• Other amenities

The new facility will replace both Empire Pool and the existing Aquatic Centre and is slated to open fall 2015.
