GDP in May at 1.6% on service-sector growth
cbc.ca Canada’s economy expand-ed for the fifth month in a row, as gross domestic product was 1.6 per cent higher in May than the same month a year ago. Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that on a monthly ba-sis, the GDP expanded by 0.2 per cent, just shy of expectations for 0.3 per cent. Most sectors of the economy ex-panded, but the service sector led the way, expanding by 0.5 per cent. On the other side of the spectrum, Canada’s goods-producing indus-
tries contracted by 0.3 per cent. The resource sector was a partic-ular source of weakness, shrinking by 1.7 per cent in the month. That’s the second straight month that sector has declined, as min-ing, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction shrank by 1.6 per cent in April. “The drag came from mining/oil/gas, which subtracted one-tick from growth overall by dropping 1.7 per cent,” CIBC said in a com-mentary. “ “June will be a wild card, as it will be swamped by the Calgary flood impacts,” the bank’s chief economist Avery Shenfeld noted.

On August 1, 1914, four days after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, two more great European powers—Russia and Germa-ny—declare war on each other; the same day, France orders a general mobilization. The so-called “Great War” that ensued would be one of unprecedented destruction and loss of life, resulting in the deaths of some 20 million soldiers and civilians and the physical devastation of much of the European continent. The event that was widely acknowledged to have sparked the out-break of World War I occurred on July 28, 1914, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was shot to death with his wife by the Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sara-jevo. Over the weeks that followed, Austria-Hungary blamed the Ser-bian government for the attack, hoping to use the incident as justifica-tion for settling the problem of Slavic nationalism in the tumultuous Balkans region once and for all. However, as Russia supported Serbia, an Austria-Hungary declaration of war was delayed until its leaders received assurances from German leader Kaiser Wilhelm II that Ger-many would support their cause in the event of a Russian intervention. This assurance came on July 5; Austria-Hungary subsequently sent an ultimatum to the Serbian government on July 23 and demanded its acceptance within two days at the risk of war. Though Serbia accepted all but two of the ultimatum’s terms, and Russia declared its intention to back Serbia in the case of such a conflict, Austria-Hungary went ahead with its war declaration against Serbia on July 28, one month after the assassinations. With that declaration, the tenuous peace between Europe’s great powers was shattered: Germany warned Russia, still only partially mo-bilized, that to continue to full mobilization against Austria-Hungary would mean war with Germany. While insisting that Russia immedi-ately halt mobilization, Germany began its own mobilization; when the Russians refused the German demands, Germany declared war on the czarist empire on August 1. That same day, Russia’s ally, France, long suspicious of German aggression, began its own mobilization, urging Great Britain—the third member, along with France and Rus-sia, of the Triple Entente alliance—to declare its support. A divided British government declined to do so initially, but events soon precip-itated Britain’s move towards war as well. On August 2, the first Ger-man army units crossed into Luxembourg as part of a long-planned German strategy to invade France through neutral Belgium. France and Germany declared war against each other on August 3; that night, Germany invaded Belgium, prompting Great Britain to declare war on Germany. For the most part, the people of Europe greeted the outbreak of war with jubilation. The great majority of people—within government and without—assumed that their country would be victorious within months, and could not envision the possibility of a longer conflict. By the end of 1914, however, well over a million soldiers of various nationalities had been killed on the battlefields of Europe, and there was no final victory in sight for either the Allies or the Central Powers. On the Western Front—the battle line that stretched across northern France and Belgium—the combatants settled down in the trenches for a terrible war of attrition, which would continue, in Europe and other corners of the world, for the next four years.

Be mindful of construction zones and towed vehicles
The August long weekend is coming up which means increased traffic as motorists travel to var-ious summer destinations including the family cottage, the beach, and other locales to visit family and friends. Most often, trailers, boats, and other types of recreational vehicles are being towed. Also during the summer, road crews are busy repairing highways and roads. Motorists must drive respon-sibly and remember to slow down to 60 km per hour when passing highway construction zones, emergency vehicles or tow trucks that are assisting other motorists on our roads. Here are few more safe driving tips from CAA Saskatchewan:Drivers:• Get plenty of rest before you head out for your long drive.• Plan your journey and be sure to include fre-quent stops (ideally every two hours) to stretch your muscles, give passengers a break, and get something to eat.• Carry a cell phone or similar type of communi-cations device with charger for use in case of emer-gencies.• Do not drink and drive.• Ensure all vehicle passengers wear seat belts and that child car seats are in working condition.• Avoid distractions such as conversations with passengers, texting and driving, eating or drink-ing.• Stay at least three to six seconds behind the ve-
hicle in front of you. To determine this distance, the driver can choose a specific point on the road (tree, sign, etc.) and wait for the vehicle in front to pass it. When done, the driver counts the number of seconds it takes to reach the same point.Drivers Towing a Trailer:• Know the towing capacity of your vehicle. This information can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual.• Review the owner’s manual for the trailer to de-termine the weight of the trailer. Make sure the weight of the trailer does not exceed the towing capacity of the tow vehicle. Never overestimate this capacity because a load that is too heavy could damage certain parts of the towing vehicle and pose a serious risk to the safety of other road users.• Take into account the extra size and weight of the trailer when driving. Be extra cautious when changing lanes, accelerating or making turns, and especially when slowing down since the load being pulled will greatly affect the vehicle’s performance and could significantly increase the distance re-quired to stop in case of an emergency.
• Motorists should also ensure that the trailer is se-curely attached to the vehicle and be sure to check this regularly throughout the trip. Check to make sure the trailer ball is tight and use safety chains. Since backing up with a trailer or camper is more difficult, it is best to be prepared in case there is a need to do this. If the driver is unsure whether he or she will be able to reverse safely with a trailer, it is recommended that they practice in a quiet area – ideally far from all traffic – before starting a trip.Trailer Care:
• Check and or grease wheel bearings and inspect the springs on the trailer’s suspension.• Check the tires. Trailer tires look okay at first glance but they may have some deterioration from age, UV rays, weather elements, or perhaps from being parked for a long time.• Also check the wheel lug nuts on the trailer wheels before each highway trip.Vehicle Care:• Check your vehicle’s tire pressure (including the spare) and fluid levels (motor oil, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid).• Take advantage of the qualified staff at the CAA Car Care Centres or Approved Auto Repair Ser-vice (AARS) facilities to have your vehicle inspect-ed in advance of your road trip.• Remember CAA Roadside Assistance is available 24 hours day in Canada and the United States.
