Members of THE CASTAWAY CREW - a Shaunavon drama club comprised of local youth - will be treating audiences to some good, clean fun later this Sunday and Mon-day. The group will present the zany comedy “The Villain Wore a Dirty Shirt” during two performances at the Shaunavon Public School Oct. 27 & 28. This is the third year in a row that the Castaway Crew has staged a fall production. In fact, many of the young actors have been involved in the previous two shows, or have been involved in other local school pro-
ductions.“They are all experienced actors now,” said Linda Pomeroy, who is once again co-directing the production with Cathy Smith. “It’s nice that they keep coming back.” The group is hoping to duplicate the same sort of success they have en-joyed with their other presentations - “Maid to Order” and “Dogsbreath Devereaux.” Both shows drew strong reviews and enthusiastic audiences. The Castaway Crew program - which was first established in 2011 - has two important purposes. For starters, the program is sup-ported by the Grand Coteau Heritage

& Cultural Centre and the shows are used as a fundraiser to create arts and cultural op-portunities for local children. But the effort also provides an opportuni-ty for local youngsters, who have an interest in theatre, to pursue their inter-ests. “It gives kids interested in this sort
of a thing an oppor tunity to get on stage and entertain people,” said Smith. “It pro-vides a venue for the kids to use their skills and talents.” The cast in-cludes actors Luke Ander-son, Alexa Kutschall, Ra-chel Davis,
Emily Galey, Patrick Wickham, Logan Thienes, Shalayne Eckart and David
Shields. The kids have been busy rehearsing for more than a month. “The Villain Wore a Dirty Shirt” is a comedy that takes place in the mining town of Digalittledeeper. Like their previous efforts, this show fea-tures a great villain - Phineas Flatworm - who believes he can strike it rich if he can just con-trol the laundry business.
Tickets for the show, priced at $10, are available at the door.
Showtime is 7 p.m. both Sunday and Monday night.

WOLFMANThe Wolf Man comes home one day from a long day at the office. “How was work, dear?” his wife asks. “Listen! I don’t want to talk about work!” he shouts. “Okay. Would you like to sit down and eat a nice home cooked meal?” she asks nicely. “Listen!” he shouts again. “I’m not hungry! I don’t wanna eat! Alright! Is that alright with you? Can I come home from work and just do my own thing without you forcing food down my throat? huh?” At this moment, the wolf man started growling, and throwing things around the apartment in a mad rage. Looking out the window, his wife sees a full moon and says to herself, “Well, I guess it’s that time of the month.”

On this day in 1873, a De Kalb, Illinois, farmer named Joseph Glidden submits an application to the U.S. Patent Office for his clever new design for a fencing wire with sharp barbs, an invention that will forever change the face of the American West. Glidden’s was by no means the first barbed wire; he only came up with his design after seeing an exhibit of Henry Rose’s sin-gle-stranded barbed wire at the De Kalb county fair. But Glidden’s design significantly improved on Rose’s by using two strands of wire twisted together to hold the barbed spur wires firmly in place. Glidden’s wire also soon proved to be well suited to mass produc-tion techniques, and by 1880 more than 80 million pounds of in-expensive Glidden-style barbed wire was sold, making it the most popular wire in the nation. Prairie and plains farmers quickly dis-covered that Glidden’s wire was the cheapest, strongest, and most durable way to fence their property. As one fan wrote, “it takes no room, exhausts no soil, shades no vegetation, is proof against high winds, makes no snowdrifts, and is both durable and cheap.” The effect of this simple invention on the life in the Great Plains was huge. Since the plains were largely treeless, a farmer who wanted to construct a fence had little choice but to buy ex-pensive and bulky wooden rails shipped by train and wagon from distant forests. Without the alternative offered by cheap and porta-ble barbed wire, few farmers would have attempted to homestead on the Great Plains, since they could not have afforded to protect their farms from grazing herds of cattle and sheep. Barbed wire also brought a speedy end to the era of the open-range cattle in-dustry. Within the course of just a few years, many ranchers dis-covered that thousands of small homesteaders were fencing over the open range where their cattle had once freely roamed, and that the old technique of driving cattle over miles of unfenced land to railheads in Dodge City or Abilene was no longer possible.

POTATO SKIN GHOSTS, served for dinner or as part of a larger Halloween party, are the perfect energy food before an evening of collecting candy. What you’ll needWashed, unpeeled potatoes (depending on the size of your pota-toes, expect about 3 ghosts per spud)Olive oilSeasoned saltOnion powderGarlic saltSour creamScallions
Additional Instructions• Cut each potato lengthwise into 1/2-inch slabs. Cut the rounded tip off one end of each slab to create a ghost shape.• Grease a baking sheet and lay the potato slabs on it (pieces with skin go skin-side down). Brush the top of each slab with olive oil and season with seasoned salt, onion powder, and garlic salt. (Suggestion: combine 1 teaspoon of each spice in a bowl, then sprinkle about 1/8 teaspoon of the mixture over each slab.)• Bake at 400º for 30 minutes or until a fork pierces the potatoes easily.• Remove the potatoes from the oven and cool for 10 minutes, then “ice” them with sour cream to create a tasty white ghost. Add slices of scallion for eyes and a mouth.
An elderly woman decided to have her portrait painted. She told the artist” Paint me with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace,
emerald bracelets, a ruby broach, and gold Rolex.” “But you are not
wearing any of those things” replied the artist.
“I know,” she said. “It’s in case I should die before my husband. I’m
sure he will remarry right away, and I want his new wife to go crazy
looking for the jewelry.”
