February heralds the start of some serious gardening activity. Now is the time to start the tidying up process around the

garden. For example weeding beds, borders, rock gardens and patio containers. This forms the basis to help you create a colourful and fragrant winter garden by using the following plants which at this time of year are at their best.Jasminium nudiflorum This winter flowering jasmine has bright yellow flowers in late winter. For the best results support the plant across a sunny wall, fence or trellis and or allow the plant to sprawl to give you great ground cover. Perfect for cut flowers bringing a bit of the outdoors indoors!CrocusIf you live in a mild part of the country and have crocuses in your garden you will have noticed them emerging from the ground. They make stunning impacts of colour in late winter and early spring especially when planted in drifts across lawns, rockery gardens or in borders. For late winter flowers try: Crocus sieberi'Tricolor' - with goblet shape yellow, white and megenta petalsCrocus sieberi'Hubert Edelstein'- silky looking purple and white flowers. For spring flowers try: Crocus corsicus - with its dark leaves and violet flowers this crocus is also scented.

Crocus cvijicii - produces golden yellow and sometimes white or cream flowers.Crocus 'skyline' - as the name might suggest this crocus bears sky blue flowers that are lightly veined with dark blue. For larger spaces in the garden which need filling such as borders or backdrops to rockerys or certain sections try the following species of Daphne:Daphne 'odora' - an evergreen shrub which has small fragrant purple-pink and white flowers from mid-winter and early spring followed by fleshy red fruits.Daphne 'jezoensis' - a slow growing shrub produces clusters of fragrant golden yellow flowers from winter to early spring. Also try Hamamelis varieties below which are again great as larger fillers and will bring colour and fragrance to your winter garden.Hamamelis (Witch hazels) varieties which bear attractive spider like flowers in oranges, yellows and reds. Here are just a few varieties to choose from:Hamamelisx intermedia mollisHamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena'Hamamelis x intermedia 'Arnold Promise'As you can see there are loads of plants at this time of year that can transform your garden. Don't forget to visit your local garden centre or nursery who can offer further expertise.

80g unsalted butter200g bitter chocolate, 70%100g icing sugar200g digestive biscuits80g flaked almonds80g dried cranberries80g pistachios2 egg yolks80g Port Wine2ml vanilla essence80g Condensed milkPinch of saltCocoa powder

Crush the Biscuits into small pieces, but not crumbs. Add the almonds, cranberries and pistachios and sprinkle half of the port wine over the mixture, set aside.

Put the chocolate and butter in a metal bowl, place over a pot of boiling water, allow to melt.

Once the chocolate is melted add

the icing sugar, salt, egg yolks, the rest of the port wine, vanilla and the condensed milk, mix well and continue cooking over the bain-marie for a further 4 minutes to cook the eggs, stir regularly.

Add the biscuit mixture. Mix well.

Let the mixture cool for 10 - 15 minute, as it starts to thicken and it's easier to work with.

Shape in to a salami shape with a double layer of cling film. Let the salami set in the fridge.

Remove the cling film and then roll the salami in cocoa powder. Its now ready to serve and I like to wrap it again in the paper and tie it with string to mimic a classic salami.

How Important is Diet and Exercise for your Pet?

Article provided by Wingrave Veterinary Surgeries tel: 020 8642 9100, www.wingravevets.com

istock

How do I keep my pet in good health?

To keep your pet in good condition it must be fed a healthy diet and allowed regular exercise. Mental stimulation in the form of an interesting environment and opportunities to play are also important. A regular walk is good for dogs because it provides exercise as well as mental stimulation.

Coat condition can be affected by diet. Fish oils or evening primrose oil capsules may help improve a dry coat. Groom your pet every day with a soft brush.

How much exercise does my pet need?

Regular exercise is important to keep all animals healthy. Most cats are good at regulating their exercise and match their food intake to their energy needs; dogs are less good at this. Excitable dogs may continue to exercise until they collapse if they are not well, and older dogs put on weight as their appetite remains unchanged despite a reduced energy requirement.

If your pet is showing signs of stiffness when they get up from rest they may be getting arthritis. If so the exercise programme should be altered accordingly. Regular short walks will allow your pet to maintain mobility better if they are arthritic. If your pet is overweight then a diet may help improve its condition and allow it to exercise better.

What is a healthy diet?

A healthy diet is a balanced diet containing all the nutrients your pet requires. Dietary requirements change with age and may also be affected if your pet is suffering from some diseases. As pets get older they may lose muscle mass and gain weight more easily. Overweight animals have a higher risk of diseases such as arthritis, heart disease and diabetes. Check your pet’s weight every 6 months to make sure it is not overweight and prevent excessive weight gain by cutting back on calories if your pet’s weight increases.

Is milk necessary for good health in cats?

It is a myth that cats need to be given milk. Milk is certainly a good source of calcium for building bones but calcium is usually found in sufficient quantities in commercially prepared pet foods. As kittens are weaned they lose the ability to digest lactose, a sugar found in cow’s milk. Too much milk may therefore give an adult cat diarrhoea. Water is the best thing for your cat to drink. As the cat is still, at heart, a desert animal it can survive on less water than many other animals. But it does need a regular supply of clean fresh water, particularly if it is being fed dried food. Canned food is threequarters water so cats fed on a moist diet may not be seen drinking.

Move or extend which is better?

Firstly I would love a pound for every time I have been asked this on a property valuation! Due to the uncertainty surrounding the property market and the fact extending has become easier and more common it’s a serious contender compared to the traditional move. The property market has been driven for many years by people wanting or needing bigger houses or more facilities, all of which can now be gained by maximising the space you may have in your current home.

Why do people still move then?

Extending allows control of the end result allowing you to know exactly what you’re getting and how it was made. With this comes the potential problems; you have to live through the work, you have the pitfalls of finding a good builder, the possibility of increasing bills mid project and also pouring more money into the same old house. Importantly you’re not getting any more land but maximising the space you already have. Moving allows us to breathe the fresh air of change, it brings new challenges in our lives making us feel alive. The convenience is foremost; work done by others with no architects or planning officials plus we can find a naturally bigger house

with more potential. Sometimes we try to squeeze our needs into our original houses instead of moving and it just doesn’t work. There are negatives with moving but they are minimal; cost and estate agents! (Although we’re not all that bad!)

Consider this; how long are you planning to stay in the house that you may want to extend? If it’s short term; your house may not support the extra investment and it may be better to move. If it’s long term; can you envisage living there for 10 years? If so then this might be the answer you need. Longer term you will not be as affected by house prices and if you see yourself there for that sort of time scale then you can have it all; a bigger extended house in the same spot.

With February now upon us and a very cold January behind us we can start to think about what the rest of the year holds. With spring approaching comes new life and fresh optimism, this is a great motivator for us to take charge of the changes we want to make in our lives.

If you have any questions regarding the housing market you would like answered then feel free to write to [email protected] and we’ll do our best to answer them. If you would like a more specific insight into the property market because your thinking of selling then feel free to call Adrian Macleay-Wood on 0208 770 3377.

You’ve been waiting, haven’t you? For January / February…..until you had finished the excess….for the snow to clear…. for the children to go back to school…for world peace? Enough excuses. You need to get on with it right now.

Decision: If you have decided that you want to take control of your body again – well done, but what took you so long? Did you really want those extra layers of fat that have gathered over the last few months / years while you were deciding? And what happened to the energy and enthusiasm you had when you were younger? Do you still know your body; do you recognise it, trust it or, more importantly, respect it? I bet you don’t know what it is capable of and not capable of.

But this is not something to be achieved just for a deadline, its forever. Your body is amazing and it is hopefully going to be with you for a very long time so why on earth aren’t you looking after it? You are going to start valuing

your poor neglected body and we are going to kick some life back into it.

Eating: If weight loss is also your goal, the hardest part is the first couple of weeks of reducing your appetite expectancy. There is no easy way; you have to reboot your stomach to be satisfied with less, no matter how much it complains or how much you want to give in. You are an adult, find some restraint! I want you to change your plate size too, stop using a dinner plate (or serving platter as I have seen!) and swap to a side plate you can still fill. You know when and what you should be eating but ease into it slowly and lets go for portion sizes first. Also eat slower, if you enjoy eating why are you rushing it?

I will cover nutrition more when we have the exercise up and running.

Exercise: You might think you have a relatively good level of fitness and yet your legs burn and

you are out of breath when you get to the top of the M & S stairs in Sutton. This is because of your under-used legs, which should be the strongest most dominant muscles on your body, and you’ve got two of them! You are lucky if you walk half a mile through the day, let alone at pace. So back-to-basics, legs and heart, that’s what we are going to start working on this month, building a strong foundation by walking. KEEP READING – DON’T DESPAIR!

Firstly, if you have any health concerns/doubts you must get clearance from your GP even if it’s just reassurance you seek.

After this I want you to buy an A4 week-to-view diary and a wall chart planner (WH Smith, approx. £15 for both) and a cheap stopwatch. Then I want you to measure yourself (neck, shoulders, chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves, upper arms and weight) in centimetres, once a month and at the same time and measure the largest circumference. Remember if only one measurement goes down YOU ARE LOSING FAT even if the others are increased.

Every day you are to list what you’re eating/drinking in the diary, how you exercised and the duration. Keep it simple.

The wall chart is purely motivational, you are going to compete against yourself, logging the times and distances. I want you to map out a 3 mile route from your house; you can build up to it or increase it. Some of you will be walking and some will be jogging/running but you are to time yourself, keep a record and try to better it each time. I don’t care about the boredom – you ate the excesses and now you have to burn them off. There are no excuses, the hardest part of training is putting the kit on whilst your lazy side desperately tries to stop you, just get on with it. Set an example, take the children at the weekend, race them.

Talking of races, our first one will be the Tesco Race for Life 27th June11am on Epsom Downs. Or for the more fearless amongst us, the Moonwalk on 15th May, 13 or 26 miles. Do you know the fastest times of these walkers? 13Miles – 2hrs 28 mins (averaging 11 ½ min per mile), 26Miles – 4hrs 45mins (averaging (10 ½ min per mile). Are you surprised? Gives you something to aim for doesn’t itAnne Davidson Dip FTST, IIHHTA member of The Premier Personal Training Network If you have a question for Anne, please email us at [email protected]

February 2010

An elderly woman, who was stranded during a shopping trip when her mobility scooter

broke down in the snow, was rescued by officers from Sutton’s Safer Transport Team.

Joan Dawes, aged 70, had just completed a shopping trip and was travelling by Sutton BR station on her way home when the battery on her vehicle failed.

A member of BR station staff came to help and was quickly joined by PCSO Colin Squires and a PCSO colleague who were patrolling nearby on Wednesday 6th January at 11.30am.

PCSO Squires then led the rescue by:

• arranging for Joan to be given a lift by PC Navjeet Bhachu and PC Carlie Grant in a police vehicle to her home in Sutton Court, Brighton Road, Sutton.

• rolling up his sleeves with another officer to push the heavy mobility scooter on the ice bound pavements to Joan’s home 400 yards away.

Joan said she was really scared at the thought of being stuck and not being able to get home to her husband, Ted, aged 76, who suffered a stroke six years ago and has just been diagnosed with renal cancer.

“I had left my husband alone at home and I didn’t have my mobile phone with me. The battery just went dead at the rail station, even though I had only charged the battery the previous day,” said Joan. “The Police were fantastic -

they could not have been nicer or more helpful. I don’t know how I would have coped without them.”

PCSO Squires said he was only too pleased to assist, although he admitted that pushing the mobility scooter was hard work. “The brakes had locked which made it twice as hard,” said PCSO Squires.

A big part of the Safer Transport Team’s role is working with the schools to get pupils and other passengers home safely. But with many schools closed due to the adverse weather, STT officers have been carrying out a number of other duties, including contacting care homes and day centres in the borough to see if any vulnerable residents are in need of assistance.

STT Sergeant Rachel Hooper-Smith said the team had made about two dozen visits to residents in need of help over a two-day period with shopping and helping to grit paths. “They can’t get out to use the buses so we are trying to help vulnerable people in other ways.”

Whether you’re returning to work, starting a course or just feel its time for them to interact with other children, finding suitable childcare is going to be a big decision for you, and your family.

The Options

There are different types of childcare available, you need to go over all the options and decide which form will work the best for you and your child’s needs.

Childminders: self-employed childcarers who will look after your child, as well as other children, probably in their own home.

Day nurseries: provide care and education for children aged from six weeks up to five years old.

Nannies: employed by you, and look after your children in your home.

Nursery schools and classes: provide early education, from ages three to five years. These placements can be full-time or half-day sessions.

Playgroups: a not-for-profit group organised by the community or voluntary group, which provides care and usually early education.

School-based childcare: activities and childcare are provided before and after

school, and during school holidays (play schemes). Usually open from 8am (breakfast club), closing at 6pm (after-school club).

Sure Start centres: a new venture, providing services for families and children from pregnancy up to the age of five.

Free part-time placements: Children aged three and four are entitled to free part-time places (through the Nursery Education Grant). These can be at a nursery, playgroup or even with a childminder. Contact your local Children’s Information Service for details.

Finding Childcare

The Family Information Services (FIS) hold lists of registered childcare providers (nurseries, childminders, etc). To get in touch with your local FIS, contact them on 020 8770 6000 or visit the website http://www.sutton.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5270

Another good way of sourcing childcare is by asking other parents/carers who they use for their children – this way you get a personal recommendation from the people who know best. But do bear in mind that what worked for them may not be the most suitable route for your children, and always ask for references from the provider if you’re unsure.

NThe Benefits of Extra Curricular Activities for your Child

istock

So many things to do, so little time: That’s the life of so many school-

age children who are lucky enough to have scores of

extra-curricular activities offered to them. The challenge to them and their parents, however,

is to manage after-school interests, strike

a balance between them and schoolwork.

As long as children are not over done with activities they can be a great opportunity. Keep

the activities scheduled in moderation. Don’t be tempted to have them at a class every

day. They may become burned out and eventually resent you for always pushing.

Your child’s self-confidence can be greatly improved if he/she is involved in an extra-curricular activity that they enjoy. People typically excel in things they enjoy, so if they enjoy their activity they are more likely to put the effort into it. Becoming good at their activity helps increase their self-esteem. Another important point is that they will learn that it is necessary to pay attention in order to learn and then it is important to practice to improve their ability. No one becomes an instant success.

How to Choose After you have an idea of the possibilities, talk to your child about what his/her interests are. Give your child some choices that complement these - an artistic child might enjoy a craft class, while an energetic one can work off energy dancing or playing a vigorous sport. Don’t overlook what might

seem like an unlikely choice. Quieter children often enjoy expressing themselves in a drama or dance class; restless children can find a way to focus through judo, karate, t’ai chi and the like. You can also target specific skills through different activities: music lessons enhance maths capability, and team sports boost social skills and co-ordination. Alternatively your child may wish to take part in a class where they can learn maths, improve their writing or perhaps learn a language in a fun way. Also consider your family’s weekly schedule when planning extra activities. Will adding an activity detrimentally affect family time? Will you, your childminder or another family member be available to taxi your child to and from classes and lessons? Make sure you visit or get a free trial when considering the class/activity. When you visit, look for:
