DINOSAURS AT ST DUNSTAN’s

We have had so much fun in Nursery; where we

have been celebrating Chinese New Year. We would like to say ‘thank you’ to Rowan’s mum

for talking to us about how they celebrate this festival in their family. She showed us some very interesting

objects such as Chinese spoons, plates, a teapot and some Chinese New Year decorations. We found out it’s the Year of the Pig.

Earlier in February, the Year 5 children visited Sutton and

District Synagogue in Sutton. It drew our RE topic ‘What does it mean to be a Jew?’ to a fascinating close. The children wrote thank you letters to the members of the Synagogue who had shared information about their place of worship and faith with us. Here are some quotes from their

letters: ‘The thing I enjoyed most was eating the flat bread and imagining having to eat it all day like the Israelites.’ Tom. ‘The intricate patterns on the Torah scrolls were beautiful when we looked at them in the Ark.’ Mia. ‘My favourite fact was that girls can become adults at the age of 12. This blew my mind!’ Callum. ‘I particularly enjoyed seeing the items

on the table such as the dreidel, challah

Internet Safety was all about online permission. This ranged from permission from others to put their photo online, to parental permission for accessing sites.

KS1 and KS2 completed activities based on permission and safe choices online. KS2 children were shocked to see how seemingly innocent posts online could be misused. Many of the children were surprised at how many websites have age restrictions or require adult permission. Mrs H Tobitt

The Salvation Army is running a recycling scheme which is called ‘Recycle with Michael’ which enables schools to support the charity whilst fund-raising.

When we return from the half-term holidays, each pupil will be given a bag to fill with second hand clothing and shoes.

Collection day - Friday 8th March.

The school will receive a percentage of the weight of the donations.

The remaining money raised from reusing or recycling the clothes and shoes is used to fund ongoing charity work by the Salvation Army.

To read more about this scheme, please go to www.salvationarmy.org.uk.

We look forward to receiving your filled sacks on Friday 8th March 2019

On 14th February, 21 children from St Dunstan's

competed in the Panathlon 2019 event, run by St James’s Place Foundation. Eight Sutton schools participated in the day and what fun we had! This event hosted eight challenges, each using core skills in PE. This event aims to promote self belief and team work and we definitely embraced the message. The children encouraged each other and

worked well to overcome new challenges. Our Year 3/4 team worked very well and progressed throughout the day resulting in 5th place. The Year 5/6 team secured 3rd place. Well done to all that participated and we hope to see you next year.

Year 4 Visit the Science Museum This week the children of Year 4 visited the Science Museum.

We began our learning journey in the ‘Wonder Lab’. The children were able to explore a world of science in an active and enthusiastic way.

Each child was given the task to explore and explain one scientific station and how it worked. They thoroughly enjoyed exploring and at the end of this session they could explain and justify their understanding of friction, materials, sound, light and much more.

We then went to the theatre where the children consolidated their learning of the journey through the digestive system. This workshop was both entertaining and informative.

The children were engrossed throughout the presentation and all enjoyed the science, laughter and exploration. The day was a great success!

On Wednesday 6th February, St Dunstan's netball team played a home match against Nonsuch Primary School. The girls demonstrated perseverance and determination during the match which ended

in a 2-1 victory to St Dunstan’s. Well done girls! Mrs S Jenkins

SG Sports are holding a Multi-Sports Camp over half-term at our school. Full details of this course and other courses/events in the area can be found on our school website under the information section—Local Services.

St Alban’s Church, Elmbrook Road, Cheam are looking for new

members to join their choir. If your child is interested, please contact the church direct.

On Friday 8th February, the boys football team (Year 6)

played against St Cecilia’s. It was a tough match, which we unfortunately lost 3-1. Alfie scored our goal following a cracking left foot half volley. We were proud that we persevered and kept playing to the end, showing great team effort and never giving up. Thank you to everyone who supports us. We are looking forward

to our next match.

A big thank you to everyone who got involved with our school food waste campaign day, be it through donated food, completing recipe cards and giving

up time to help on the day! It was wonderful to see so many people stop at the campaign day ‘Scrumptious Yumptious Leftovers’ tables. During the afternoon, years 2 to 5

enjoyed having a go on the pedal power smoothie bikes whilst Orion made pizzas made out of leftovers, which were given out at the end of the day. You will have seen brilliant banners made by Orion and

certainly would have heard the chant ‘Yes to Taste, No to Waste’. Look out for the St Dunstan’s Scrumptious

Yumptious Leftovers Recipe Book which will give you

even more ideas for how to use your left over food.

The children had a very nice surprise on Thursday as they went into the lunch hall. The catering team decorated the servery with a Valentine’s theme. Thank you to the team for making such an effort and for making the school feel even more loved.
