Fall Prevention
Seminar Fall prevention may not seem like a lively
topic, but it's important. As a person gets
older, physical changes and health conditions
— and sometimes the medications used to
treat those conditions — make falls more
likely.
November is Seniors’ Falls Prevention
Month and to bring awareness, the Centre is
hosting a seminar presented by Raili
Quathamer, Public Health Nurse from the
Renfrew County and District Health Unit,
Wednesday November 2 at 10:30 a.m.
Pre-registration is recommended by calling
the Centre 613-735-1226. Seminars are open
to the public, invite your friends, all are
welcome!

2 day trip– December 8 & 9
Just a few pointers when parking
at the designated Senior Drop-In
spaces around the Centre - at the
wall of the Fire Department and
across the street in front of the Bell
building.
Certain days of the week are busy
and parking is at a premium. We
are asking you to be conscious of the parking
spaces and to park with in the painted lines.
This will allow the allotted spaces to be used and
not causing a shortage by taking up two spaces.
Also as a reminder to have your green “parking
pass” clearly visible on your dash, whether it is
in the designated spots or at the Anglican
Church lot when available. This pass identifies
you as a member of the Senior Drop-In Centre .

Lynn, the same one that teaches Yoga, has volunteered
to lead a Meditative Writing group once monthly
beginning in January. If deep soulful thinking and
musing appeal to you, then this activity may just have
your name on it. Meditative Writing is an expressive art
for which the only qualification is a willingness to “put
your heart on the page”, with the option of sharing in a
small non-judgmental group (6-8people). An activity
fee and your time are the only expense --- the benefits
may surprise you! Writing for purposes of publishing is
out of the scope of this group.
We will come to group prepared with a one page (2
max) “write” of distilled thoughts/feelings. Sometimes
we write in prose, sometimes in poetry; this Haiku by
Yoga Lynn is an example:
It doesn’t matter
if we do not know what soul
means in a given language.
But it matters much
if we cannot relate from
the depth of our soul.
Medi ta t i v e Wri t ing
January: Discussion will centre around “The Invitation”, a poem by Oriah Mountain Dreamer from her book by the same name. This will be but one source of inspiration for our work (handout to be distributed in group).
February: In honor of Valentine’s Day, the topic will
be “What Kind of Love Is This”. An excerpt from The
Little Book Of Love by Jacob Needleman will be
distributed at end of the January group meeting.
March: The topic will centre around “Mindfulness to
the Simple Truth”. Handouts include a short poem by
R D Laing plus “Letters to a Young Poet” by Rainer
Marie Rilke both to be distributed in previous group
meeting.
April – June: To Be Determined
A minimum of 4 participants required for this
program to proceed. Sessions will be on the 1st
Wednesday of the month from 1:30 pm—2:30 pm.
Whether you receive a call or email and
now text messages, asking you for
personal information on credit cards,
bank accounts or to change your
information, BE AWARE!!! Frauds and
scams are out there in many forms. Do
not give any personal information without
contacting knowing the source or call
your financial institution for verification,
NOT the number they give you.

BEWARE!
We’re getting
ready for
Christmas
In preparation for the Christmas season
we are asking for help. Although the
Centre is closed Friday November 11, a
group is getting together at 1 p.m. to
decorate the level 2. Please let the office
know if you could lend a hand.

Monday October 24ts, sixteen enthusiastic
members participated in the walk at Shaw Woods.
We walked for 1 hour 10 min for 3.17 km or 1.97 mi.
It was surprising to see the many leaves in their
splendour still on the trees.
Such is not the case for our next planned hike. The
next “walk in a hike with nature” will be Tuesday
November 22 at 10 AM in Alice. Normally we
walk on a Monday for our hike but hunting season
is from Monday November 7 to Monday November
21st so we decided to delay it by a day. We did the
pre-walk and it is a long walk/hike, we walked
for 8.27 km or 5.14 mi. and it took us approx. 2
hours to complete the walk. It was a very scenic
walk.
Trail Type: paved and unpaved country roads
with an abandoned railway line. We did not walk
the railway line but instead traveled
Bourne Road which runs parallel to
the railway line. It is considered
moderate difficulty if the railway is
used for the walk.
Information: the footing is good on
the country roads. The walking
descends into Alice, a pretty village
situated on the Indian River. The
northern part of the walk is through
rolling country-side while the
southern half is through secondary
growth bush. The roads are somewhat
hilly.
DIRECTIONS: Directions: You can take
Highway 17 to get to Highway 58 (the old
Highway 62), turn on to Highway 58 and drive
west and straight for approx. 6 km until the first
bend in the road, Take the right turn onto
Bourne Road and park by the Cemetery.
Need to Know: There are no public
washrooms. Parking is limited to the shoulder
of the road. Please wear appropriate shoes or
boots. Walking sticks would be helpful on the
gravel road. I will bring a few coloured vests
and shirts for people to wear if they want to.
Bring water to drink and your camera for the
once in a lifetime photo. If a ride is needed
please call the Centre by the Monday, car-
pooling might be a possibility.
