These are the basics of that new plan: to temporarily partner with Branch #179 located on Commercial Drive; continue to increase membership (hint, hint) and to wisely use what funds the branch still has to invest in fun(d)raisers throughout the community including ‘Pop up Legions’ (look for those in the coming months).

Happily and miraculously, the plan that was put together in under two weeks was accepted and this 90 year-old branch survived. Eventually, it is the goal of the branch to find a permanent home again in Collingwood. This is great news for every single person in this community. Why? Because the money that the Legion raises through its Poppy Fund Campaign and other fundraisers throughout the year goes straight back into helping this community.

And for this reason, I am personally inviting you to consider becoming a member of Branch #48 for 2016. Its easy and you would really be helping out Collingwood’s oldest organization in this, its’ greatest time of need. Call Bev today at (604) 876-6010 and let her know that you want to join Branch #48.

Royal Canadian Legion Collingwood Branch #48 Update by Paul Reid

It’s November again, so one full year since I caught up with Royal Canadian Legion’s Collingwood Branch #48 and found out that they had lost their charter and would be finished before the end of 2014. “It would take a miracle,” said one of the branch members.

That miracle has slowly being taken place over these past twelve months. With this community’s help, enough support was found and enough new members signed up to encourage BC/Yukon Command to give Branch #48 a fighting chance. Though still officially on ‘probation’, the branch is now taking baby steps towards full re-constitution.

It was really be the skin of its’ teeth that the branch evaded disolution. With only ten days before an already much extended deadline, members found themselves with just ten days to submit a new business plan to BC/Yukon Command. At this point, there was no plan as the bid to make the old Jaguar’s Pub their home had fallen through. The branch’s reconstitution quickly had to come up with something new.

VIVO Media Arts - Continued from page 1

Dahl Media Library & Archive (CDMLA) – Western Canada’s largest collection of media art and independently produced documentaries. Its collection dates back to 1968 when Vancouver artists first got their hands on Sony’s revolutionary portable video recorders. The collection includes more than 6,000 video titles in addition to publications, documents, photographs, film and almost five decades of video technology.

Whether originally recorded on open-reel videotape or the latest digital technologies, the CDMLA makes rare works accessible to academics, curators, historians and the public through in-house research and curated exhibitions and events. There are several in the coming months you should check out. From November 22 to 28, VIVO joins grunt gallery and Western Front in presenting the inaugural Vancouver Independent Archives Week, a diverse series of free public events illustrating the unique value of artist-based archives and the vibrant history they contain.

VIVO’s exhibition will provide an overview of the archive’s history, highlight recent creative research projects, and immerse visitors in new media art incorporating or working with archival material including sound pieces, experimental video and installations. It will also feature an evening screening of newly digitized video by Gayblevision, Canada’s first TV series produced by and for the LGBT community. This historic series documents the people, places, events and ideas that defined Vancouver’s LGBT scene in the 1980s. Gayblevision alumni will be in attendance.

December features two events. On Wednesday, December 2, Vancouver’s first feminist film and video production centre, Women in Focus, will be featured at CDMLA’s popular annual dinner fundraiser, EATa: Evening at the Archive. This intimate and interactive series invites guests to view materials unique to the archive around a specific theme and to engage in a collegial conversation with the artists and others who were critical players in that historical moment.

On Friday, December 4, the volume is raised as local punk legends donate their talent for a one-of-a-kind musical extravaganza in aid of the collection of artist, provocateur and punk videographer, Lenore Herb.

VIVO Media Arts Centre is located at 2625 Kaslo Street. For information on all VIVO programs visit their website at www.vivomediaarts.com or their Facebook page. Want to know more about the events above or the Crista Dahl Media Library & Archive? Email [email protected].

EYE CARE CENTRE

Cathy Folkard: The light shines onby Akberet Beyene

It’s been a little more than a year since Cathy Folkard, the Queen of Malta Place, left us for her final journey. It was on October 16th, 2014. On this first anniversary of her passing I find myself walking in sweet memories of our many Thursdays together.

Cathy was one of the first women that I met through the Better at Home seniors program at Collingwood Neighbourhood House. When I first walked into Cathy’s house, I had no idea how fortunate I was to meet this wonderful woman.

It was November 2011. I was a new refugee, having arrived in Canada only a few months earlier. From the very first day that I stepped into her home I was embraced by a motherly love which I had missed since I left my family. To me it felt like I now had a Canadian mom, and I felt so very honoured. From the very first time we met, Cathy went out of her way to make me feel at home. Her children accepted me and invited me into their beautiful big family, encouraging me on my quest to start a new life in my new country.

Thursday was my day with Cathy and every week I looked forward to this day, because it felt like I was going home to my family’s house. Every moment I spent with her was a joy. I will never forget the amazing stories she told me about how she came to raise her wonderful family and the way she lovingly remembered her late husband. I admired her devotion to her family.

Cathy was very proud and even in her old age she always tried to take care of herself without bothering anyone. She was extremely organized: every week there were plans, marked in her

calendar. She looked forward to the days she would spend with her group at the senior’s centre, playing bingo and doing other activities. I remember the days when she joyfully reported that she had won a game.

Then there was the day her cane went missing and she didn’t want to report it as she believed that whoever took it must have done so because he or she needed it, maybe they couldn’t afford to buy one for themselves. This is exactly why she was such a great woman. Cathy was always so generous, full of love and compassion.

Later on I was fortunate to find a small apartment very close to my dear Cathy’s house. This enabled me to spend more time with her, besides our regular Thursdays. She would invite me for breakfast on Sundays and I remember many lunches and dinners together. It was with her and her daughter Marnie that I got to experience wonderful sights around Vancouver like Horseshoe Bay.

It might sound odd, but one of the most difficult and painful things for me in dealing with her departure has to do with the light in her living room. I could see it clearly from my window. Cathy used to stay up very late before going to bed. She loved to watch TV way past midnight and before going to bed she had the habit of walking to her computer room to see the photos of her siblings, children and her big blessed family. Then the light would go dark and she would go to bed. When Cathy’s living room light went off I knew that it was late for me as well, and I hurried into bed.

Her light was more than just a light for me, it almost had a spiritual meaning, like a beacon in the night, which had led me to a safe place.

Whenever I walk by Cathy’s home or look outside towards her old home, I still look

for the light in her window, and I miss it so much.

This past year our neighbourhood has been very different without Cathy. I miss seeing the familiar cars of her family, always dropping by to visit regardless of snow, rain or heat. She was never left alone. Cathy had a long and happy life.

I have a picture of Cathy in my kitchen. In it she has that big wonderful smile, so contagious that I smile back automatically, without thinking, every time I see it.

I want her to know how loved she was and is – by so many. And I want to thank her for her beloved family, who continue to care for me like she did. I feel so blessed and proud to be part of this family.

We miss Cathy each and every day; she is always with us and in our hearts, be it when visiting with Marnie or gathering for happy times. I can always hear her voice and how she said the words, “Bye love,” when it was time to part.

I will never forget Cathy, the Queen of Malta Place.

Rest in peace Cathy Bella. Bye love.

Eating Out in RC by Paul Reid

Freshii2920 Virtual Way #2 (@ Renfrew) North of Renfew Skytrain St.(604) 253-3732

Do you know about Freshii? This healthy fast food phenomenon started in Toronto by a young Canadian entrepreneur, Matthew Corrin, Freshii is growing by two to three stores per week and now has over 250 stores world wide. Including, now, Renfrew-Collingwood. Yay! This new location is located just north of the Renfrew Skytrain station, in the Broadway Tech Park at Renfrew and Virtual Way.

Our Freshii was just opened in July by Rani Mannan and her husband, Mike. Experienced restaurateurs and franchise owners, this dynamic duo are preparing to open a second Freshii location at Station Square in Metrotown.

So what makes Freshii so special? How about a Buddha Satay with rice noodles, crispy wontons, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, green onions, peanut sauce Spicy Lemongrass soup with spicy lemongrass broth, rice noodles, tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, cilantro. Or a Metaboost salad with field greens and spinach, kale, mangoes, carrots, edamame,

almonds, goat cheese, balsamic vinaigrette. Yes, this is healthy food. To all of these, you can add tofu, chicken, steak or turkey. Also on the menu are burritos, juices and smoothies, frozen yogurt and chili

I tried out the Spicy Thai burrito. This included quinoa, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, edamame, and spicy lemongrass sauce – to which I added chicken. I also ordered a bottle of juice and some pita chips. Within just a few minutes, my burrito was ready, along with a couple of sauces: sriracha and ranch. This burrito, no lie, was probably the best wrap that I have ever tried – and I’ve tried a lot. So delicious, and so packed full of fresh delcious flavours – Freshii definitely is a good name for this type of food. Perfect for that business person or teacher or student who wants something to eat on the run, but something healthy. Yes! Healthy food, I thought, as I gorged on my nutritious burrito, can taste awesome.

Go taste for yourself why Freshii is sweeping the nation. They also do catering. Maybe your boss will spring for the famous catering box filled with popular chef-designed wraps and burritos with tofu or chicken; kale, quinoa, steak or gourmet tuna. Bon appetit.

Go try the Spicy Thai burrito at Freshii and find out why this new healthy fast food chain is sweeping the planet.

TransLink wants to cut service to Kerr, 54th and Tyne on the 49th Avenue bus! Last year Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods led the charge when TransLink suggested this service cut, and our community worked together to convince TransLink to change their mind.

TransLink is once again proposing that the 49 bus go straight on 49, bypassing Kerr, 54th Avenue and Tyne. Our community joined forces last year and saved these eight vital stops, and we can do it again!

Please let Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods (contact info below) know if you can help in any way.

TransLink expects that all residents in this neighbourhood can walk to 49th – but that is not realistic. This area is full of seniors, people with disabilities and families with small children. This proposal cuts off access to transit for many. There are also safety concerns for people who use transit early in the morning or late at night who would be required to walk to and from 49th Avenue.

TransLink must hear loud and clear from our community that we need to keep the #49 bus running on Kerr, 54th and Tyne!

How you can help1. Go online and complete TransLink’s survey about the proposed changes: http://www.translink.ca/tnc2. Spread the word. Make sure community members know about this proposed cut. Read On Is Back! Hello readers! After a short break, the Read On page is back. I, Cari Chan, am still the writer. It has been a long time since I introduced myself, so I will do it again! I worked as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Collingwood Neighbourhood House and Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House. I have also taught English in Mexico, Thailand, Korea and the United States. I still teach a little, but most of the time I am with my two daughters. They are 5 and 3 years old.I like to travel, read, dance, go for walks and try new foods. There are so many good restaurants to try in Vancouver. I studied French and later learned Spanish and some Thai. I know how difficult it can be to learn another language!

I would like to know more about you, my readers. Where are you from? What languages do you speak? What do you like to do? What do you like to read about? You can write to me at [email protected]. I am excited to write Read On. I hope it will be helpful to you.

Robert Miranda and his wife Lily are pumped to bring Oxygen Yoga and Fitness to us here in Collingwood. Opened on June 8 this year, Oxygen Y&F, which offers modern yoga fused with fitness, started in Maple Ridge and has since spread throughout Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.

Hot Rise and Shine Yoga; Hot Cardio Fever; Hot Power Core; Hot Barre Fusion; ABSolutely Burning Butts; Hot Total Body Conditioning – these are just some of the daily sessions that you will find at Oxygen. In addition to the workouts, which are always designed to be safe and effective with your personal ability in mind, Oxygen’s studios utilize infrared heat. Infrared heat can help you burn twice the calories as normal by boosting your metabolism and reducing body fat. It is also credited with improving one’s immune system and removing toxins and mineral waste from the body.

Lily is one of the trainers who received her training certificate thru Oxygen. “Lily’s teacher, Christina Raskin, was a fantastic teacher who not only taught the poses, but passed along to Lily a new attitude and mentality,” says Robert. The couple wasn’t planning on buying a franchise until they started reading about it on the website. “We looked at it and crunched the numbers and said, ‘Hey, we could do this.’ It’s been a heck of a ride with a lot of busy days and sleepless nights, but this experience with Oxygen has been a healthy transformation for both of us and we’re loving it.”

“Lily blows my mind with her dedication and the amount of work she puts in. She is also filling in with muscle from doing so much yoga,” says Robert. He handles the night shift, Lily the day. “I jump in as much as possible. It’s almost hypnotic. After awhile, the background drops away, along with the stress, and you find your mind completely in the moment, not thinking about anything other than your own breath. This is when you know you are getting into it.” Oxygen currently has five instructors, keeping the classes rolling every day from 6 am to 9 pm.

Lily grew up in North Vancouver. She met Robert while visiting Montreal at a mutual friend’s house. Eventually, Robert moved out here and the two now live right in our community. They both LOVE it here. “I can’t believe how nice the people are in this community. Everyone that comes in just has a heart of gold. We are finding that it is so much more than just business transactions – we’re building friendships.”

Lily and Robert are both very much into yoga and fitness. Though they have little time for hobbies now with the new business and their two-year-old son, back when he did have time, Robert loved to play sports, especially baseball, which he played at a competitive level back in Montreal.

“It’s been a heck of a ride with a lot of busy days and sleepless nights, but this experience with Oxygen has been a healthy transformation for both of us and we’re loving it.”

Homeless Action Week in Collingwood focuses on access to public transit by Peter Greenwell

We live in a mobile society and for people to move out of shelters and find housing and work, public transit is essential. Currently in Metro Vancouver there is no plan in place to ensure access for people who cannot afford transit fares. To mark this year’s Homeless Action Week, October 11-17, 2015, Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s Homeless Program organized a public forum on transit access for people who are living on low-incomes.

Other major cities in Canada and Washington State have programs

and policies that provide emergency and ongoing access for people living in extreme poverty. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel, we can

learn from and implement programs that are successful in other cities.

Why focus on transit during Homeless Action Week? We know that an accessible and affordable public transit system plays an important role in the region’s social

sustainability. For people who are homeless, social sustainability is about maintaining social networks and personal support systems as

well as accessing essential medical services, housing and employment.

The public forum on October 8 at Simon Fraser University Woodward’s featured guest speakers from Calgary and Seattle presenting on programs in their cities that increase public transit access for people living in extreme

poverty, including shelter residents. These are successful programs benefiting thousands of people. Out-of-town speakers included Bonnie Pacaud and Collen Huston of FairFares Calgary and Mark Konecny of King County Metro Transit. Local speakers included Karen O’Shannacery, the retired

executive director of Lookout Emergency Aid Society, and Peter Greenwell, Collingwood Neighbourhood House.

Peter Greenwell coordinates the homeless programs at Collingwood Neighbourhood House.

Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annual General Meeting: much to celebrate by Norman Hill

At CNH’s annual general meeting on September 23, it was clear that CNH has much to celebrate.

In their report, CNH Board President Julie Linkletter and Executive Director Jennifer Gray-Grant highlighted the fact that CNH’s new annex is on the way. It is being built on Vanness Avenue, off Boundary Road, and is scheduled to open in 2018. The annex will provide more than 10,000 square feet of much-needed multipurpose space for the community.

Along with CNH’s upcoming physical growth, CNH and the neighbourhood can also celebrate the completion of CNH’s strategic planning process. This has included consultations over the past year with staff, participants, volunteers, community partners, funders and CNH members to get

feedback on how things have been going and suggestions for areas to focus on going forward. Based on this input, a strategic plan was created, which the Board planned to vote on at the end of October. The plan, which covers the next five years, will be posted on the CNH website soon.

CNH and the community can also celebrate CNH’s excellent staff, who have worked so hard to support CNH, often over many years. Paula Carr, CNH’s former Executive Director and more recently, Community Strategist for Renfrew-Collingwood Intercultural Development, was singled out for her 27 year contribution to CNH and the neighbourhood.

At the AGM many staff members and contractors were recognized for their

long service to CNH. These included nine staff with over 10 years’ service, twelve with over 15 years’ service, six with over 20 years’ service (Michael McLenaghen, Kulwant Kaur, Ivy Ng, Teresita Nidua, Diana Taykandy, and Alison Merton), and one, Family Services Coordinator Satinder Singh, with over 25 years’ service!

The celebratory theme was echoed in other parts of the meeting.

CNH Board of Directors members were thanked for their dedication. All members will be staying on the board over the next year, although Julie Linkletter has stepped down as president and a new president was to be elected at the late October board meeting.

CNH also presented Windermere Secondary School graduate Angela Ang with its Community Vision Award, which celebrates

a local youth who will further CNH’s mission. Angela grew up, studied and volunteered in the community, and is now pursuing a career in Education at SFU.

COMMUNITY LUNCH Collingwood Neighbourhood House invites you to lunch every Tuesday and Thursday. Full meal prices are $6.25 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for students and $3.25 for children under 12. Items can be purchased a la carte or “to go.”

CNH Board of Directors President Julie Linkletter has stepped down after serving nine years on the Board, including six as President. She will stay on as Past President to mentor the new President. Julie originally moved to the neighbourhood with her husband specifically because of CNH’s reputation for excellent child care. “Julie has been a wonderful leader through challenging times: lobbying effectively for annex space through presentations to City Council, leading the strategic planning process, and putting in a lot of extra work. She really, really cares about the neighbourhood. Many thanks to Julie’s husband Joe and her daughters Sarah and Hannah, who were without their Mom on many evenings and pitched in while she was away,” Executive Director Jennifer Gray-Grant said.

Let’s remember our veterans’ contributions and sacrificesArt and message by Ricardo Cerna Canada’s veterans: strong, proud and free. These soldiers are a complete Canadian family: “They are our grandfathers, fathers, brothers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, neighbours and heroes.”

Remembrance Day is an opportunity for all Canadians to recognize the contributions our veterans and to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of Canada.

Each year, in November, all government buildings fly the Canadian flag this day and people remember those who fought for Canada during a two-minute silence at 11 am. Many people wear poppies and attend commemorative ceremonies.
