25 th June 2015 Dear Parent/Carer, Year 8 Wider Learning Week Monday 6 th July – Friday 10 th July 2015 Wider Learning Week provides enriching learning experiences in familiar and new contexts. Activities will challenge students and promote a wider understanding and independence. It is also to reward students for their hard work this year. Please be aware that, for the duration of this week, the school day will change - school will start at 8.45am and finish at 2.45pm. This is to provide time for staff to set up these activities, and to allow students to register in their activity groups. Below outlines the exact nature of the week for your son/ward: On the following days students will rotate activities based on their House: ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION BRUNEL SHACKLETON TURNER Thorpe Park trip Fun and rewarding day exploring the Geography and Physics of Theme Parks. See separate letter Monday Tuesday Wednesday Business survival Skills A business day of financial, team and decision-making exercises Tuesday Wednesday Monday Politics Developing some political understanding; run a mock election Wednesday Monday Tuesday On Thursday and Friday, all of Year 8 will be following the same activity: DAY ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION NOTES Thursday Engineering challenge A challenge day based on engineering/technology, competing against all other tutor groups N/A Friday Boulogne - for those that have signed up Day trip to France See separate letter Zoo Extravaganza A Zoo-inspired day – including real exotic animals N/A Key points: School Day starts 8.45am and finishes 2.45pm (5.00pm on the Thorpe Park trip day) Full school uniform, except on Thorpe Park day Packed lunch and money is needed for Thorpe Park (FSM students will be provided with a packed lunch) We look forward to a fun and rewarding week. Normal school rules apply all week; if any students do not follow these, they will be removed from the activities and conduct independent work.
