SMS text languageif dis msg ws snt 2 u wud u NdRstnd it?

The best way to understand online chat and SMS text message lingo is to simply try it. Even those people who aren’t acquainted with text messaging may still find themselves sending or receiving derivatives of this SMS chat lingo as they continue to communicate through typewritten form.

When reading or writing SMS, you may see that numbers replace words (i.e. “4” is used instead of the word “for”), or vowels are omitted in easily recognizable words (i.e. “txt msg”). Furthermore capitals are used to replace the letter name, whereas lower case letters are used to pronounce the soft sound of the consonants (i.e. the word “XLNt” is “exc-ell-en-t”). SMS isn’t restricted to English. For example, in Mandarin Chinese, numbers that sound similar to words are used instead of the words themselves (example: “5 2 1″ in Chinese “wu er yi,” sounds like “wo ai ni” or “I love you”; similarly “4 7 8″ or “si chi ba” phonetically matches the epithet “drop dead”).

Phone Number Poetry DirectionsSome poetry forms, like haiku and tanka, invite the writer to come up with a specific number of syllables for each line of a poem. For fun, try using your phone number to help you select which words you will include in the ten lines of your number poem.

Start by writing your phone number vertically. Then use that number as your guide to precisely how many syllables can go on that line of your poem. So, for example, if your phone number just happened to be 780-555-1212, your poem would have lines of seven, eight, and ten syllables, then three lines with five syllables on each, followed by four lines that have a one syllable word followed by a two syllable word on the next line, etc. Zeroes will count as 10 syllables. See the sample below. 7 A New Year’s Resolution: 8 Avoid chocolate and other sweets 0 But, all things in moderation are good. 5 I bite into the 5 peppermint patty 5 the taste floods my mouth 1 not 2 guilty 1 no 2 regrets

Topics: Your phone number is part of your personal information, so your phone number poem should reveal something personal about you.In this number poem, try to express:

- your philosophy of life, - a source of inspiration, or - a passion in your life

Criteria: No specific figures of speech are required, but because you are very limited in the number of words and syllables you can use, you must select your vocabulary carefully.

Optioneel Fysieke warm up. U laat de leerlingen onderstaand gedicht lezen op het bord.

20

Page 21: yal.weebly.comyal.weebly.com/uploads/5/1/2/6/5126344/yal_task2_poet…  · Web viewEnD2A 2014-2015. Wngs. i run az fast az ... i run az fast az i can.tryin 2 get away frm tha ...

- http://ifaketext.com/ - http://transl8it.com/ - http://www.netlingo.com/acronyms.php - http://www.lingo2word.com/translate.php

Wijs de leerlingen op de restrictie: niet meer dan 160 karakters (inclusief spaties). Op bladzijde 12 vinden ze andere gedichten ter inspiratie.

De leerlingen lezen elkaars gedichten.De leerlingen werken in tweetallen.

Discussion taskTry to sit everyone in a circle for this discussion. You can cut out the questions of page 21 and the students take it in turn to pick a piece of paper and ask the question to the others. This way each student can be in charge of leading the discussion. Make it clear from the start that you are going to listen rather than lead the discussion. If you think it would be more appropriate you can give the questions to students to discuss in pairs. Give one question to each pair and set a time limit of two minutes then get them to pass the question on to the next pair.

AnswersWings I run as fast as I can.Trying to get away from the craziness.I hear them behind me“Hook up?” you ask.ErasersThe damned on earth.I stop at the end of the cliff and jump. The erasers have caught up to me and are clawing at my feet to pull me back down to hell. I unfolded my wings.Feeling the cool breeze go through my feathers.I fly.I am a mutant. But I am myself.
