Read the poem aloud for the class

KEN NESBITT,

My teacher took my iPod.She said they had a rule;I couldn't bring it into classor even to the school.

She said she would return it;I'd have it back that day.But then she tried my headphones onand gave a click on Play.

She looked a little startled, but after just a whileshe made sure we were occupiedand cracked a wicked smile.

Her body started swaying. Her toes began to tap.She started grooving in her seatand rocking to the rap.

My teacher said she changed her mind. She thinks it's now okayto bring my iPod into class. She takes it every day.

While Reading:

Students listen and read along with the teacher

Get them to think about what happens in the poem? As you’re reading it.

After Reading:

Do the exercises:

1, Get them to think about what happens in the poem? (Make sure they have one simple explanation, not too detailed, in Dutch is fine)

2, Vocab: Guess the meaning of the words in red. Followed by explanations on the board if and when needed

3, In depth Summary about the poem using the benefit of the newly learnt words. (remember this is only an explanation of, not what they think about it, analysis only)

Picture round instructions:

Organise the class in groups of four. Deal the envelopes with all the pictures out, one set per group. Tell the students they have three minutes to figure out which picture goes with which word

from the poem. Read the poem out loud and have each group wave the corresponding picture in the air

when it is read aloud. Make sure you pause and check that all teams are showing the correct picture.

Dock points for incorrect answers (Most groups should have all the answers good)

Finish off with some fun.

Play the Youtube clip of the girl doing the poem, (sluit aan bij de belevingswereld van de kinderen)

If the class is prepared to play again, let them act out the poem using the images

(With a small class an easier way would be to split the class down the aisles into three teams. But you can choose what you want !! )

Extra Work:

In depth questions if and when you have time over:

If a poem doesn’t rhyme is it still a poem?

What do you think about the poem? (Here is what they think about it, feeling about it, happy, funny sad, groovy, etc.)

Use this to get them to come up with more descriptive words, NICE is NOT good enough.
