Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions account for more disability and more costs to the US health care system than any other condition, and with the aging of the population it is expected that the burden to society will continue to increase.1 The burden of MSK diseases in the US is currently estimated at 1 in 2 (126.6 million) adults, twice the rate of chronic heart and lung conditions. The annual cost for treatment and lost wages in the US is $874 billion (5.7% of the GDP), with an average annual cost per person for treatment of $7,800.2 There is a growing body of literature that has demonstrated the inadequacy of MSK education during medical school, and conversely the high proportion of patients seen in practice who present with MSK related problems. MSK conditions are common in general practice, but clinicians express lack of confidence in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of these complaints.

This one-day educational activity will discuss clinical musculoskeletal conditions commonly encountered in the Primary Care or Internal Medicine practice. The program will provide a breakdown of conditions based upon regional anatomy and review common clinical conditions, a differential diagnosis based upon the symptoms, history & physical examination review & pearls and diagnostic imaging workup.
