PQSCADA Server
Note: This drawing depicts the flow of data
The PQSCADA server is the heart of the BLACKBOX data management and analysis system.
The main functionality of the PQSCADA server is shown in the figure above and further
described below with corresponding numbered marks:
1. Download: PQSCADA collects all waveform data that has been continuously
recorded in the compressed PQZIP format.
2. Process: The data is processed and organized for quick access and storage. A wide
range of electrical parameters are then calculated based on the raw PQZIP data.
The reorganized PQZIP data, and the calculated parameters with statistics
included, are stored and available on the network for later retrieval.
11
3. Deliver: All the electrical information, including event flagging & notifications are
delivered over a number of communication gateways. This feature includes report
exports in various compatible formats such as COMTRADE, PQDIF, CSV, RTF, HTML,
PDF, etc.
4. Visualize: Detailed data can be easily analyzed by any number of clients at any
location. The Investigator Software provides an immediate, comprehensive and
understandable picture of everything that happened within the network.

Data Processing
The Data Processing column displays the processing status of PQZIP data. In order
to activate the tools for this column, you will need to Enable the function by right
clicking anywhere in the Data Processing Column & selecting Enable:
The data processing takes place in 2 stages - namely:
Stage 1 - Data Transferral from the PQZIP to the Database, including:
Decompression & collection of waveform data sources
Data is recompressed into 1min chunks called “BINARIES”
The Binaries & Device Events are stored into the Database
RMS (V/I) are computed into 1min Summaries
After this stage has been concluded, the minimum resolution period that is
available for all the parameters, is 3 Hours.
Stage 2 - Data Processing itself:
Computation of all other parameter summaries
Computation of Class A aggregated parameters (Version 4)
Summaries are stored every 1 Min / 10 Min ( Min/Max/AVG)
After this stage has been concluded, all queries may run for a period longer
than 3 Hours.
The Binaries calculated during Stage 1 are used for:
Stage 2 computation
Queries that are initiated from Elspec's Investigator Software Program for
less than 3hours. Any selected parameter is immediately computed from
the stored waveform signal in order to achieve a maximum resolution.
The summaries are used for queries that are run for a longer period than 3
Hours & this consequently shortens the response time for such queries.

database faster.
Truncate Log: Each database works with 2 files; Data and log. If you are
not doing “SQL transactional backup”, then you should turn this ON.
Shrink Log: Truncate log only sets the log file to begin from the start but
does not free up the log file space. Shrink log deletes all the unneeded
information in the log file.
Shrink Database: After some time the database gets fragmented (not disk
fragmentation) or has data that is marked for deletion but is not actually
deleted from the physical disk. This operation reorganizes the database file
on the disk and makes the whole database operation faster.
Remove Null Rows: This newly added operation automatically compacts
database files with "null row values".

Tasks and Templates
Tasks are pre-defined functions that allow you for instance to set regularly
scheduled Exports; or reports according to a specified Event or Time Trigger
(monthly, daily, weekly, and fixed). A task operates within a Site or on a Node(s)
that are attached to a Site.
Templates are used to define the Events, Parameters, and Configurations for
utilization by different Tasks. By using Templates, you can save the time of
redefining all variables across multiple tasks. A single template can serve multiple
tasks & in return the task will only utilize the necessary components from that
template needed to execute the task. Summary of Template Components &

Tasks
Tasks are pre-defined functions that allow you for instance to set regularly
scheduled exports; or reports according to a specified event or time trigger
(monthly, daily, weekly, and fixed). A task operates within a Site or on
components that are attached to a Site.
Some tasks require the use of a Template to define the specific parameters of the
task. Each task can have multiple Templates. For example: A task that needs to
record a voltage dip event, providing both the RMS Voltage and Frequency values
during the event , the template is the place where the user defines the desired
values.
As with most PQSCADA components, you may access the Tasks through either the
View or Administration console. The default is View mode. You must first select
Tasks in View Mode before switching to administration mode in order to access the
Task/Template components.
Use the Task Creation Wizard to Add a Task.

Dynamic Folder Path
When dealing with a large number of output files created from Tasks, the
default path doesn't always make the file readily identifiable. In order to
further improve the flexibility & integra’bility of the files, Elspec has now
added a new feature to their Task Wizard namely the Dynamic Folder
Path. This feature will enable the user to set a dynamic directory
(according to custom settings) for the files that will be created as the
Task is being executed. This feature is relevant the: COMTRADE Task,
PQDIF Task, PQZIP Task, Report Task, Device Firmware & Configuration
Update Task & the PQS Parameters Export Task.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
You can add the Dynamic Folder Path, once you get to the Data Stage in the Task
Wizard:
147
Select the Manual Option & in the text box add the applicable characters:
?N: For the Node's Physical Name
?S: For the Site's Physical Name
?P: For the Node's Virtual Name
?Q: For the Site's Virtual Name
?Y: Year
?M: Month
?D: Day
?C: Date formatted as - dd_mm_yyyy 23_02_2012
?T: Time formatted as - hh_mm_ss 02_43_55
Select in order to ensure that you have access to the Folder Location of
your choosing
After you have selected , the following warning message will appear:
The message serves as reminder that the you should ensure that you have access to your
selected Folder Location as the reports will not be created if you don't have access.
Files will be created in the directory as per the example above:
C:\PQS\2012\02\29\08_18_43\Elspec_Site_1\Elspec_Node_1
148

Default: The default output location is where the PQSCADA
automatically saves the file, or
Manually: Save the file in a location of your choosing, by
utilizing the newly added feature Dynamic Folder Path in order
to more readily identify the folder location & file name.
Type of Data included in Report:
The definitions below outlines optional periods based on the Events,
Parameters & Resolution defined in the Template. These factors will
have a major impact on the amount of data reflected in the report. For
instance, events included in the report will include data prior & post
151

multiple parameters, the more data is included in the report.
Therefore pay particular attention to the time period you choose for
your report & ensure that your system is able to support the file size.

PQS Parameter Export Task
This newly added task will provide a simple solution that delivers powerful Power
Quality Data. The task creates a report in (CSV/Excel) that in itself is highly
compatible, that includes parameters selected by the user, based on either a
schedule / event, at any desired resolution. In addition to creating a report that
can be integrated into any 3rd party system, the user defines the parameter &
resolution settings thereby determining the size & speed at which the file is
produced.
The configurations that you'll select during task procedure in creating this report will
determine the outcome of the file size. For instance, by selecting high resolution
parameters based on a period will produce enormous files. It is also an unrealistic choice
as the resolution ( 1/2 Cycle; Cycle by Cycle; 10/12 Cycles) will already include continuous
electrical information for chosen data within the report, without having to base it on a
period. Irrespectively, the PQSCADA will produce the report according to your selections &
a warning will appear when selecting the resolution:
ENSURE THAT YOUR SYSTEM CAN SUPPORT THE FILE SIZE. The wizard will ask you to
base your parameters on the following triggers:
Period: The report will include continuous electrical information for the chosen time period, according to the parameters & defined resolution.
Events Only: The report includes only events that occurred during the selected time period. The duration of each event is as per the selected events, parameters & defined resolution.
Period & Events: Report includes data for the Whole Time Period & Events (as above) separately according to the Events & Parameters at the defined resolution.

Adding A Report Task
Elspec has now enhanced the previously Report Task as to display more detailed
information. The PQSCADA 4.2 & later versions now supports report functions that include:
The Fault Location Report that provides the estimated distance from the Main
Terminal to the fault.
Compliance Support Function: by which specific reports can be produced for
compliance purposes. Included in this function is the newly added FOL Norwegian
Report.
The Energy Report Task that combines total energy (produced/consumed) for a
site with a predefined TOU profile.
The Report System of the PQSCADA V4.2.2.2 is installed independently from the PQSCADA.
This allows the user to effectively manage the reporting system for the entire network.
Users simply select & install reports of relevance from any location.

Define Property Configurations
The Define Property Configurations allows you to define the configuration parameters for all events. Some of the parameters are changing rapidly in a given time unit while others change less often. Therefore we need to provide those parameters that change frequently with a higher resolution, hence the “High resolution” definition. The parameters which change less often in a given time unit may be represented with a lower resolution, hence the “Low resolution” parameter. Which parameters will be represented in High Resolution and which in Low Resolution are preset in the PQSCADA manager.
Enter the Respected Configurations & use the where needed:
High Resolution: Primarily used for short time intervals
(waveforms). In our example we use 6400 which is calculated from
50Hz * 128 samples per cycle.
Low Resolution: Primarily used for longer time intervals (minutes,
seconds). In our example we select 1.0 update per second rate.
Pre-Trigger Margin: An additional time period (margin) is taken
before the trigger is scheduled.
Post-Trigger Margin: An additional time period (margin) is taken
after the trigger is scheduled.
When concluded, click to create the template:

Selecting this preference will take you directly to the Activation of the SSL protocol (Secure Socket Layer) for enabling secure, encrypted communication between PQSCADA Management Studio and Investigator which are both client software, and the PQSCADA Server. Furthermore, the certificate can also provide proof of the server’s identity should the administrator choose to purchase and install a commercial certificate from a trusted CA. The new PQSCADA Installation (V4.1 +) includes a certificate for a SSL protocol. This is in addition to the newly added Security Module for the PQSCADA & may used independently or in combination with this module.

Automatic Maintenance
Set the Automatic Maintenance settings by selecting the Automatic
Maintenance Tab:
Enable Database Maintenance: If this is checked, then the operations below occur:
Re-Index: Each table in the database may have one or more indexes. After some
time these indexes get fragmented which makes operation on the database take
longer. Re-index reorganizes these tables and makes the database faster.
Truncate Log: Each database works with 2 files; Data and log. If you are not
doing “SQL transactional backup”, then you should turn this ON.
Shrink Log: Truncate log only sets the log file to begin from the start but does
not free up the log file space. Shrink log deletes all the unneeded information in
the log file.
Shrink Database: After some time the database gets fragmented (not disk
fragmentation) or has data that is marked for deletion but is not actually deleted
from the physical disk. This operation reorganizes the database file on the disk
and makes the whole database operation faster.
Remove Null Rows: This newly added operation automatically compacts database
files with "null row values".

NOTE NOTE NOTE
If you have a database administrator or a maintenance plan, NONE should be checked as the DBA has his own maintenance plan. If you don’t have a DBA, then 1,2,3, and 5 should be checked (if you are not doing an SQL transaction backup). Shrink Database (4) is a very expensive operation that can take hours to finish and slows the database considerably when executing. The database log file and the logs/notifications that exist in PQSCADA are not related in any way.

Report Management
With PQSCADA V4.2.2.2 the PQS Server & Management Studio can be
installed independently on two different computers. This increases the
flexibility & accessibility of the PQSCADA 4.2. As part of this development
the Report System is installed independently from the PQSCADA. This allows
the user to effectively manage the reporting system of the entire network.
Users simply select & install reports of relevance from any location. The
Reports are installed separately from the PQSCADA Management Studio on
Elspec's Website. In addition an automated installation is available on the
BLACKBOX Disc (enclosed with every unit). After you have installed the new
PQSCADA 4.2, you will need to install the new Reports. The following
procedure describes the installation process. The installed reports of your
choosing can be viewed on the Server's Configuration.
NOTE NOTE NOTE
Prior to installing the new PQSCADA V4.2.2.2 & the new Report Management System all
tasks related to report tasks, needs to be reconfigured from anew. Ensure that you
backup your Database prior to installing the new PQSCADA version in order not to lose
previous data.

Component Functions
The Graphical User Interface of the application uses a tree-like file structure to the representation of the Components. Components can also be imported from previous versions of PQSCADA and Upgrading to be used in the current version. The component functions can be broken down as follows:
Common Functions (Functions that are relevant for all components (Expand,
Collapse, Upgrade, and Moving Components)
Specific Functions:
Server (Only relevant for the server)
Site (Only relevant for the site)
Node (Only relevant for the node)
303
Collapse
Components such as the Server and Site can be made to view more easily by collapsing the
component tree. This is accomplished by:
Clicking the (-) sign next to the component (PQS Server in this example):
To collapse only to the 1st Level, right click the desired component, then select Collapse:
304
Expand
Components such as the Server and Site can be viewed to reveal sub-components quite
easily by expanding the component tree. This is accomplished by:
Clicking the (+) sign next to the component (PQS Server in this example):
Right click the desired component select Expand:
305
Moving Components
The PQSCADA software offers a user friendly hierarchical Site construction view. A
very large Site can be broken down into smaller sub-Sites. In each Sub-Site, it is
possible to create Sub-Nodes. In this way, the structure and GUI of the Main
viewing area in PQSCADA most accurately represent the actual electrical grid
architecture.
The PQSCADA allows you to change the logical location of Nodes and Sites with
drag and drop convenience, to parallel a physical change. It is possible to move
entire Sites underneath other Sites as well as moving individual Nodes to other
Sites as well as other Nodes.
Moving Components: This is done very simple by clicking the component with
the left mouse button, then by dragging it to the new location. You will only be
able to do this by Unlocking your components - see Administration Console for
more details.

Security - About the Security Module
The new PQSCADA Installation (V4.1 +) includes a Security Module that will allow
you to manage & secure your PQSCADA server by permitting / denying users to
perform certain actions within the PQSCADA. This is in addition to the newly
added certificate for a SSL protocol (Secure Socket Layer) for the PQSCADA & may
used independently or in combination with this module. The Module supports
different environments, however only 1 Server within 1 Network Environment can
be defined as the Primary Security Server. Types of Environments & Support:
TYPES OF SUPPORT:
A Single Server which acts as its own Primary Security Server:
Networks of PQSCADA Servers & each one refers to a Primary Security Server
within that Network:
A Network of PQSCADA Servers where the Security Module is Disabled:
319
BASIC ENVIRONMENT WITH 1 PRIMARY SECURITY SERVER:
This is a more commonly used environment, where a single server acts as
the Primary Security Server:
ENVIRONMENT WITH 2 SERVERS & 1 PRIMARY SECURITY SERVER:
This scenario the client may connect to multiple PQSCADA networks each
with 1 pre-defined Primary Security Server. The client initiates a user
authentication, the direct server forwards the request to the Primary
Security Server, which performs the actual validation.

Video Demonstrations
We have created the following collection of Flash Video Tutorial Demonstration(s) that may be opened with Internet Explorer or any flash player available on your system:
PQSCADA GETTING STARTED:
PQSCADA Getting Started is intended to provide the first time
user as a Quick Start into the most basic critical functions of
the PQSCADA Software.
PQSCADA USER INTERFACE:
PQSCADA User Interface introduces the user into the main
viewing screen of the Graphic User Interface of the PQSCADA.
It includes an explanation of the three distinct sections the
Tool Bar, Status Bar, and the Main Viewing Area as well as
the View and Administration Console.
CREATING PQSCADA TASKS & TEMPLATES:
Creating PQSCADA Tasks and Templates introduces the user
into a step-by-step tutorial on creating both a Task and a
Template. Tasks are pre-defined functions that allow you to
set regularly scheduled exports and/or reports according to a
specified event or time trigger (monthly, daily, weekly, and
fixed). A task operates within a Site or on components that
are attached to a Site, while a Template is used to define the
Events, Parameters, and Configurations for utilization by
different tasks.
PQZIP EXPORT TASKS:
PQZIP Export shows you how to use Export Task in PQSCADA
to routinely backup your system and save up to 50% of hard
disk space
CREATING A REPORT TASK:
Creating a Report Task guides you through a step-by-step
demonstration of creating a report task in PQSCADA.
346
ADDING A SITE:
Adding a Site guides you through a step-by-step process of
adding a Site to a Server.
ADDING A NODE:
Adding a Node guides you through a step-by-step process of
adding Node(s) onto Sites.
IMPORTING POZIP FILES:
Importing PQZIP files guides you through a step-by step
process on how to manually download PQZIP files from any
location on your PC or external location into the incoming
folder instead of from the device.
MOVING COMPONENTS:
Moving Components guides you through the process of
changing the logical location of Nodes and Sites with drag and
drop convenience, to parallel a physical change. It is possible
to move entire Sites underneath other Sites as well as moving
individual Nodes to other Sites as well as other Nodes.

Troubleshooting
Component Issue Reason Solution
SQL Installation During the SQL Express installation, the PQSCADA did not recognize the Windows installer 4.5 is for Arabic Vista SP2
Install SQL Express RS2008 directly from the BLACKBOX Disc supplied with the product & not via the PQSCADA
PQSCADA Installation
You receive an error message: Installation error #1001 during Installation.
The PQS Service was not uninstalled prior to re-installation/upgrade.
Alternatively the uninstallation process was unsuccessful. See Uninstallation
In order to ensure that the PQS Service is complete uninstalled, you will need to re-run the procedure via your Run box in your Start menu:
Click Start Run CMD
In the command prompt window, type sc delete pqs.server
Enter
Restart your computer & Re-install new PQSCADA version. NOTE NOTE NOTE
Open the command prompt for Windows Vista/7 with elevated permissions
You receive an error message: PQSCADA Server can only be installed for one user only
PQSCADA Server is already installed for one user & you need to therefore only install the PQSCADA.
During the Installation procedure for Select Components select only the PQSCADA Management option:

Component Issue Reason Solution
Notifications Viewer
Notifications are not displayed in the “Notifications Viewer”
You didn’t select the “Start” & “End-Time” range when you configured your Notifications Viewer.
You will simply need to simply select the time range again:
Follow the Notifications Viewer procedure
Notification You don't receive any notifications further the Notification Task you've created.
You have created a Site under a Node. Therefore the PQSCADA is unable to recognize a task created under two Sites.
Create only 1 Site for Node(s):
VDC Query The Query for the VDC parameter does not respond.
The PQZIP file for the G3500 doesn’t support the VDC parameter.
You need to set this configuration in the Device's Web Interface:
From Elspec’s Search Utility open your G4K unit the Web Interface,
In Configuration uncheck the VDC parameter
FTP PQSCADA doesn’t download all the PQZIP files
Once the PQSCADA has downloaded the PQZIP files from the G4K Unit, it will keep a list of all the files & folders in order to ensure that the re-downloading process is not duplicated. In some rare instances (for example when the PQZIP files are deleted from the G4K), the PQSCADA doesn’t always recognize the availability of additional folders & ceases the process.
You will simply need to prompt the PQSCADA to rescan & download these files again:
Follow the Rescan Device Folders procedure
349
Component Issue Reason Solution
FTP - Continue The Node keeps on downloading the same PQZIP file without advancing to the next download. (You may confirm this, by accessing your Log Viewer – See the Help Wizard:
Troubleshooting Log Viewer).
The folder, under which the PQZIP file in question is located, contains PQZIP files with indexes bigger than the limit of an integer.
You will need to change the index of the problematic files:
Open the Node in the FTP
Locate the problematic files
Simply change the files to a smaller number than the limit
(Right-click Rename the File)
PQZIP You are unsuccessful in re-downloading the PQZIP files appear as errors in the Log Viewer
When the PQSCADA downloads and calculates PQZIPs, the processed files are saved in the Database. Re-downloading the files (e.g. in case some data was deleted from the node), will result in an error in the logger that these files have been already downloaded.
You will need to reset the PQZIP files for that Node:
Follow the Reset PQZIP File procedure
The recorded data is incomplete (some of the data is missing)
The PQ configuration in the Web Interface for the G4K unit reads as Misconfigured:
The state of the device is not “no DSP sync”.
Make sure that PQ Configuration is correct in the Web Interface:
Configuration Voltages & Frequency
Configuration Currents
Differences there could affect the data recording
Invalid time synchronization has been configured in the Web Interface.
In the Web Interface enter:
Configuration Time
For SNTP Usage: Ensure you to have a valid IP address of the SNTP
For GPS Usage: With PPS or IRIG-B for the time sync (and the device jumps between SNTP and the GPS\IRIG-B) change the “Transport” field to “GPS only”
350
Component Issue Reason Solution
PQZIP - Continue
The recorded data is incomplete (some of the data is missing)
PQZIP files are finalized too fast & therefore the PQZIP files are undersized
In the Web Interface enter:
Configuration PQZIP Recording
Change the PQZIP file size to 2 hours
PQZIP files are not finalized properly and remain as PQ files.
The PQSCADA application cannot download incomplete files. To make sure that this is the case – go to the FTP root folder and verify that the time stamp in PQ files is similar to the time stamp of the missing data.
Should some or all the PQZIP File not be finalized:
In the Web Interface, Disable the PQZIP recording
Go to the FTP root folder and delete all PQ files.
In case there are only few files that were finalized improperly and the missing data is important – send the files to Elspec’s Software Support.
PQZIP files are transferred to the “Bad Files” Folder
Send the files to Elspec’s Software Support for further investigation.
PQZIP Task PQZIP Task has failed to create PQZIP files
PQZIP files are limited to a file size limit of
2Gb.
You need to re-perform the PQZIP Task for either a shorter period
of time / alternatively, with a less amount of data:
Follow the Add A General Export Task procedure
351
Component Issue Reason Solution
PQZIP Viewer PQZIP file cannot be opened
by PQZIP viewer in Vista or
windows 7 OS.
The “user account control settings” (UAC) is
on.
You need to turn off the “user account control settings” (UAC) on
your computer:
From your Control Panel select Change User Account Control
Settings:
Set the settings to Never Notify
Components Your attempt to add
components have been
unsuccessful.
Components adding consist of events
sequence and some of them were not
executed as the PQSCADA Service was halted
/ interrupted or the computer was reset.
Follow Remove & Create Node procedure in order to delete &
create the node once again
Some of the newly added
components are not
displayed.
From the Administration Console select the Refresh button

Parameters Elspec's Investigator
Program does not show the
data with a resolution above
2.5 hours.
The parameters were not checked during the
configuration of the node & consequently
they were not calculated.
From the Parameters mark the specific parameters to be calculated
Or alternatively
Follow the Recalculate Data procedure
The parameter calculation is
incorrect.
The G4K device was configured incorrectly
during installation & setup & recorded the
data incorrectly. Therefore phases need to be
swapped (polarity) to correct the data
calculation.
Follow the Swap Phases procedure for this specific node
Reports Chinese Report fails in vista
